Debt Restructuring Delays Tamale-Walewale Road Project, Says Asenso Boakye

The much-anticipated Tamale-Walewale Road project has been delayed due to the government’s debt restructuring program, according to the Minister of Roads and Highways, Asenso Boakye. Apexnewsgh reports

Despite its inauguration in June 2022, the 83km highway remains untouched, with the Minister attributing the delay to suspended disbursements caused by the debt restructuring program.

Negotiations Nearing Completion

Asenso Boakye reassured the public that negotiations with the Finance Ministry are nearing completion, and construction will soon resume. He stated that contractors will return to the site once negotiations are complete.

Project Significance

The N10, which includes the Tamale-Walewale Road project, is a vital segment of the Central Corridor Road System, connecting Accra to northern Ghana and facilitating trade between Ghana and its neighboring landlocked countries. The project aims to boost intra-urban, regional, and national trade, enhance regional economic integration, and reduce business costs.

Tour and Inspections

During his tour of the North East Region, the Minister inspected several road projects, including the completed 52km Wiase-Yizesi-Soobiinsi road and the ongoing Yagaba-Kubori-Mankarigu, Yagaba-Prima, and Yagaba-So roads.

He also assessed the Wulugu-Kpasenkpe road, the Mishio-Prima bridge, and the Walewale township roads project, expressing dissatisfaction with the slow progress on the Mishio-Prima bridge project.

Government Commitment

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ongoing road projects and urged support for Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Usif in the upcoming elections. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Walewale township roads project, which involves the construction of feeder and urban roads.

He further said, the Tamale-Walewale Road project has been delayed due to the government’s debt restructuring program, but negotiations are nearing completion, and construction is expected to resume soon.

The Minister has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ongoing road projects and expressed satisfaction with the progress of other projects in the region.
