In recent times, donkey skin has become a popular venture for Chinese in the Upper East and North-East Regions of Ghana because of the medicinal benefits attached to it in some other countries, especially in traditional Chinese medicine.

Engaging the media after a stakeholder forum in Bolgatanga on Thursday, July 6, 2023, Dr. Kanton pointed out that, if the practice of Donkey killing is not put to a stop in the region, soon its population will witness a massive reduction.

Stressing that drastic action must be taken quickly to arrest the situation.

Meanwhile, sharing some of the importance of donkeys, the chairman of Ghana Poultry Network (GAPNET) said donkeys play a very important and crucial role in rural communities as working animals, especially by way of assisting community members in terms of farming, transportation, and some other important tasks.

He believes that the shortage or better elimination of donkeys in rural communities will definitely affect local economies and agricultural practices, which automatically will become a burden to farmers and the rural people.

Dr. Kanton used the medium to send an appeal to the government and other relevant authorities to consider the 2016 law that bans the killing of donkeys.

The stakeholder forum was organized by the Ghana Poultry Network (GAPNET) and Donyaepa, with funding support from BROOKE, an international charity dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of horses, donkeys, and mules.
