MMDCE: Upper East Region carry first in the northern sector after a total official number of 229 applied for the MMDC positions

Upper East Region, is leading in terms of the number of aspirants contesting the position of Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE, s) in the northern sector with 237 aspiring candidates across the 16 districts in the region.

Even though, the governing New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region was heavily criticized after the 2020 general election for an abysmal performance shown since the party history according to critics, especially by losing the 3 seats already secured in 2016 to NDC in 2020.

Upper East Region became the first region across the country to start the process of filing for those interested in the position of MMDC, s in the region which later triggered the National Secretary John Boadu openly announced in one of his interview with Accra base station, that the national office did not sanction any regional executive to start such process. John Boadu also used the opportunity then, to caution interested candidates to be careful.

However, vetting of these interested candidates has started across the country in batches with Upper East Region inclusive.
In the Upper East Region alone, out of two hundred and thirty-seven (237) people who applied to occupy only (15) MMDCE positions in the region, 8 withdraw themselves from the race bringing the official number of aspirants to 229, and out of this, 15 are women, with 23 aspiring candidates in Binduri being the highest and the least being Nabdam with 7 aspirants. In the Garu district, a different and disturbing situation where a family consisting of father, son and mother all presented themselves to be considered as the District Chief Executive of Garu district.

Meanwhile, other regions in the north such as the Savanah region received Eighty-three (83) applicants, Upper West region were one hundred and twenty-three (123), Northern region alone has two hundred and eight (208) applicants and North East region has on record seventy-one (71) applicants.
