The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency of the Central Region has raised its concerns regarding the directives issued by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). The directive instructed journalists to blacklist activities involving the Kasoa Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson.
The NPP argues that the attack on a journalist during the NPP’s parliamentary aspirant vetting in Cape Coast was not planned or executed by the MP’s camp. The incident involved a Cape FM journalist, Ohene Kwame David, who claimed he was assaulted by individuals wearing t-shirts associated with MP Mavis Hawa Koomson. David also suspects that the attack may have been a case of mistaken identity involving his brother, who works at UTV.
MP Mavis Hawa Koomson has denied these allegations and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. However, the GJA responded by issuing a directive urging journalists to boycott the MP’s activities.
The leadership of the Awutu Senya East NPP held a press conference expressing their disappointment with the GJA’s directive. They highlighted that the MP’s office did not receive any updates on the investigations after initial contact with the GJA.
Mr Micheal Addy, the Constituency Secretary, voiced the party’s dissatisfaction with the GJA president’s statement, which implicated the MP’s association with murderers who attack people even in their homes and mosques. The party demanded a retraction and an apology to the MP.
The NPP called for a thorough investigation into the matter before any conclusions were drawn by the GJA. The party’s internal investigation reportedly found no evidence suggesting any involvement of the MP’s team in the mentioned attack.
