National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo to stop what he describes as lawless fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

President Akufo-Addo yesterday said he strongly disagree with those against the burning of excavators seized from illegal mining activities in the country.

He added that those who disagree with him can go to court.

In reaction, Sammy Gyamfi in a post on his Twitter page has said enforcing 15-25 year imprisonment of illegal miners will be better than the burning of seized excavators.

The NDC Communicator in a post addressed to President-Addo with the hashtag ‘stop the lawlessness’ urged the President to use effective way to fight galamsey.

“Nana Addo, the prosecution and 15-25 year imprisonment of illegal miners as provided under our Minerals and Mining Act, is a more deterrent and effective way of fighting the “galamsey” menace than the burning of Excavators. #StopTheLawlessness,” the post reads.

Meanwhile, at a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Law Village Project in Accra on Wednesday, April 26, 2021, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his endorsement for the latest approach to combat illegal mining.

According to him, anyone who has a problem with the ongoing exercise by Operation Halt should go to court.

“I know there are some who believe that the ongoing exercise of ridding our water bodies and forest zones of harmful equipment and machinery is unlawful and, in some cases, harsh.

“I strongly disagree, and I would advise those who take a contrary view to go to court to vindicate their position if they so wish. That is what the rule of law is all about,” the President said.
