You will not be short-changed by government in protecting your pensions– Akufo-Addo told workers

President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given massive assurance to the organized labour that the pension funds of its members are safe as the government continues its Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). Apexnewsgh.com report The President gave the assurance at the 2023 International Labour Day parade. According to him, the government is aware of the impact of the Programme on workers and as such aimed to explore other beneficial options within debt sustainability limits, especially with the collaboration of Organized Labour and government. “I urged Organized Labour to continue to work with the rest of the tripartite body to conclude negotiation for public sector salaries and the minimum wage for the 2024 financial year as soon as possible”. President further said, “In undertaking the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, we have been very mindful of its potential impact on the pension funds of workers. We will not act in any way to short-change workers in protecting their pensions.” “In this regard, within global risk management practice, the options should include diversifying the portfolio of pension funds from the current 70% in government paper to real sector investments including rail, housing, urban transportation, motorways, and airport as is done by other pension funds.” The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah who also spoke at the May Day parade, used the medium to caution government not to go against its promise to not include pensioners in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme. “Mr. President please, do not touch our pension funds…Protecting pensions is our responsibility and we take it very seriously, to us, our first responsibility now is to continue to protect our pension funds from the domestic debt exchange programme.” “I wish to emphasize that participation in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, voluntary as it was, was critical for the protection of the economy, and the enhancement of our capacity to service our public debts effectively and create fiscal space for our growth and development,” the president said. “In the midst of the current economic crisis, we cannot risk defaulting in the payment of our public debts, which would attract severe consequences – hence the debt exchange programme,” he stated He appealed to all Ghanaians, including Organized Labour to continue with the good relationship that exists between them and the government, stressing that the peace they both enjoy should not be taken for granted. Colleges of Education likely to start running a shift system–Osman Ayariga

Interested aspiring candidate on the position of National Deputy Youth Organizer in the upcoming internal party election of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Osman Ayariga has revealed, that if care is not taken, colleges of education are likely to run a shift system. Apexnewsgh.com report Mr. Ayariga made the revelation during his speech at the TEIN induction ceremony of level 100 students of Gbewa College of Education on Saturday, July 17, 2022. He said: “You know it was under the NDC that we eliminated the quota system with regards to the colleges of education. There was a conscious effort to try as much as possible to admit as many students as possible in the colleges of education and the enrollment increased over 100% during the tenure of John Dramani Mahama”. The aspiring Deputy National Youth Organizer maintained that “It was under John Dramani Mahama that we introduced some many colleges of education and also so many infrastructural developments with regards to the colleges of education. Unfortunately, if your lecturers are here, they will bear me witness that, come next year or the next academic year, with what is going on whether we like it or not we have two options with regards to colleges of education. Either we revert to the quota system or we are going to run a shift system so far as colleges of education are concerned. Stressing that, if we are not careful, we are going to have a gold track, yellow track, and green track for colleges of education. Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana/Gbewa college of Education/TEIN

Upper East Regional Minister begs teachers unions to temper justice with mercy

The Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu has appealed to striking Teacher- Unions to temper justice with mercy and return to the classroom while government resolves their concerns. He noted that government appreciated their concerns and would endeavour to resolve the problem, adding that the timing for the strike action was not right, considering the Russian- Ukraine conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic that has negatively affected the global economy. The Minister made the appeal when he visited the Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School (BOGISS) and Bolgatanga Senior High School (BIG BOSS) to ascertain the impact of the strike on the students. Hon. Yakubu assured the teachers that the relevant authorities scheduled to meet the union leaders would work to resolve the impasse, and therefore urged the unions, especially the kitchen staff to consider the plight of the students and cook for them. He used the opportunity to call on parents to support their children in second cycle schools while school authorities fashion out other alternative ways to cook for them. He commended the Head teachers who in the midst of the challenges, ensured the students were fed to enable them concentrate on their own private studies while they waited for their teachers to resume from the strike. UER: Teachers described missing yellow signal on our traffic as a confusing trend for children–VIDEO

Some nursery school teachers in the Upper East Region have registered some level of dissatisfaction over the missing ‘yellow signal’ on the traffic light in recent times. Over the years, children in kindergarten and nursery schools have been taught some traffic rules and regulations by way of singing. The popular song for our children is “If you see a traffic light there is something you must know, red means stop, yellow means get ready, green means go go go and go. Is no longer the way it was taught because the yellow signal is seriously missing in the modern traffic light available in most regions across the country. Some of the teachers who spoke to Apexnewsgh.com described the current experience as confusing and worrying. “This one is a problem because the yellow signal would alert you to get ready. So, as there is no yellow signal, we that are used to the yellow signal will be confused. especially when it’s time for you to get ready and you are still there, you might crash with someone”. The lamented This incident has generated some arguments between a lovely daughter and her father when they were caught up in the traffic light. The little girl as they stopped at the traffic light, started singing when the traffic signal was on ‘red’, as brilliant she was, she was patiently waiting for the traffic light to change to a yellow signal but unfortunately, the ‘green light’ appeared and she quickly asked the father whether the traffic light is faulty because she expected the yellow signal light which in the actual sense means ‘get ready’ but unfortunately the green signal rather appeared. The father said, as at that time, he was short of words and didn’t know what response to give to his daughter but only resorted by telling her is a modern traffic light.   But, did that change the situation or even the girl mentality about the confusing trend? Are the manufacturers of these current traffic lights telling us that the yellow signal which normally allows people to get themselves ready for the green signal is no longer relevant? Teachers to enjoy 10,000 affordable housing unit in Akufo-Addo’s administration

President Akufo-Addo has re-affirmed that his administration is building 10,000 affordable housing units for teachers. According to President Akufo-Addo, “government recognizes that all modern successful nations that have experienced extraordinary results in the transformation of human capital and economic development have shown that teacher quality is, perhaps, the single most important determinant of their success”. He made the pronouncement at the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference and the 90th-anniversary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) held in Kumasi, Ashanti Region on Tuesday, 4 January 2022 on the theme: ‘Surviving as a reliable and vibrant teacher union in the 21st century. He said: “For us in Ghana also to make a success of our nation, we must pay attention to teachers”. “It is only a group of well-trained and motivated teachers that can help deliver the educated and skilled workforce we require to transform our economy and nation”, the President acknowledged. “Many years ago, our society respected and honored our teachers”, saying: “To be introduced anywhere was a teacher came with enormous prestige”. “Sixty years ago, being a teacher, even a pupil-teacher, was a respectable and fulfilling job and a teacher could build a decent house through his or her salary alone”, he stated. Sadly he observed, “we cannot imagine such a scenario for today’s newly qualified teachers or even teachers who are near retirement”. “This is not good enough and that is why my government remains committed to improving the circumstances of our teachers”, he noted. “We believe that teaching should not be seen as a stopgap measure or a job of last resort but as a viable choice to enter a well-respected profession with positive long-term career prospects and good benefits”. The President said. “We’ve restored, since coming into the office five years ago, and we continue to pay teacher trainee allowances, which were abolished by the previous administration”. “Yearly average increase in salaries over the last five years, my government has, for the first time in our nation’s history, been paying a professional allowance to teachers” and also: “We’ve abolished the three-month pay policy for teachers”. Responding to teachers’ benefits, he said: “We have cleared the arrears. Let me repeat: we have cleared the arrears and promotions due teachers have also been affected”. The government, the President intimated, “is also committed to the development of affordable housing for teachers all across the nation”. “The current initiative will involve the provision of housing for both mortgage and rental”, he explained, observing: “I’m fully aware the one challenge facing teacher ownership of homes, beyond finance, is their inability to purchase homes where they intend to retire”. However, he noted that “through a subsidized loan programme, teachers will be provided an opportunity to own homes, houses in desired locations in various parts of the country”. According to the President, the Ministry of Education “is working with the National Service Scheme on this”. The President added that the Ministry of Works and Housing “is in discussions with teacher unions, including your own GNAT, to provide more housing opportunities for teachers”. According to him, “Within the next two years, it is proposed that 10,000 housing units, on affordable terms, will be developed for teachers across the country”. “This, we all know, is the tip of the iceberg but it is a good beginning”, the President said. “I’m glad to hear how much you welcome the supply of laptops and promise you that the other related matters of concern of which the national president referred to in her speech, will be addressed.” “Good relations between GNAT and my government are a matter of importance to me and I’ll do my very best to promote such relations”, he stressed.
