The Minority in Parliament has demanded the immediate review and scrapping of taxes on petroleum products which they argue constitutes about 40% of the price build-up in the 2022 budget. According to the NDC MPs, such a move will cushion Ghanaians who have had to endure about 43% increment in prices of petroleum products this year alone. Addressing the media moments ago, minority spokesperson on mines and energy John Jinapor accused the Nana Addo administration of compounding problems of Ghanaians by increasing taxes on petroleum products. Mr Jinapor said the excuse from the government that a litre of fuel is selling at almost Ghc7.0 cedis as a result of prices on the world market is untenable. “Ladies and gentlemen, it may interest you to know that within a spate of just one-year fuel prices have risen from 4.77 cedis per litre to 6.8 cedis per litre representing a whopping 43% increment under this insensitive government. These astronomical increases has resulted in untold hardship which is threatening lives of ordinary Ghanaians. “The Minority has equally taken notice of the lame and flimsy excuse from government and its communicators that they cannot do much to cushion Ghanaians because in their own words “they do not control the world market price of crude”. What they have failed to inform Ghanaian is that the devaluation of the cedi is a major contributor to these astronomical increases. “We wish to state emphatically that we completely and flatly reject these lame excuses from government; the question we seek an answer to is “since when did the current NPP government led by President Akufo Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia realise that government had no control over world market prices? “Ladies and gentlemen, is it not these same people who promised the people of Ghana prior to assuming office that they will abolish the energy sector levies describing them as obnoxious and further promising to move the country from taxation to production? “On the contrary, what Ghanaians are witnessing under this government is a complete display of incompetence, arrogance, and deception as far as the Energy sector is concerned.” Below is the full statement by the Minority STATEMENT READ BY HON. JOHN ABDULAI JINAPOR ON THE RECENT FUEL HIKES UNDER THE AKUFO ADDO/BAWUMIA-LED GOVERNMENT. Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen of the press. We welcome you to this Press Conference by the NDC parliamentary caucus and wish to begin by expressing our gratitude to the media for your continuous support in the professional discharge of your duties. The Minority has followed with keen interest the persistent and rampant increment in fuel prices which appears to be worsening in recent times with no hope in sight. The recent astronomical increases in fuel prices at the pumps and its attendant high cost of living to the ordinary Ghanaian cannot be glossed over. Ladies and gentlemen, it may interest you to know that within a spate of just one year fuel prices have risen from 4.77 cedis per litre to 6.8 cedis per litre representing a whopping 43% increment under this insensitive government. These astronomical increases has resulted in untold hardship which is threatening lives of ordinary Ghanaians. The Minority has equally taken notice of the lame and flimsy excuse from government and its communicators that they cannot do much to cushion Ghanaians because in their own words “they do not control the world market price of crude”. What they have failed to inform Ghanaian is that the devaluation of the cedi is a major contributor to these astronomical increases. We wish to state emphatically that we completely and flatly reject these lame excuses from government; the question we seek an answer to is “since when did the current NPP government led by President Akufo Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia realise that government had no control over world market prices? Ladies and gentlemen, is it not these same people who promised the people of Ghana prior to assuming office that they will abolish the energy sector levies describing them as obnoxious and further promised to move the country from taxation to production? On the contrary, what Ghanaians are witnessing under this government is a complete display of incompetence, arrogance, and deception as far as the Energy sector is concerned. Not only have they retained the so-called obnoxious taxes, they have gone a step further to increase the existing taxes and in some instance introduced new draconian taxes which continues to worsen the living conditions of the already impoverished citizens of this country. Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, it will be recalled that the Akufo-Addo government during the course of the year announced a paltry 4% increase in wages for public sector workers for the 2021 financial year, by comparing this wage increment against the current inflation of about 10.6% (Bank of Ghana), one can only come to the conclusion that the ordinary worker is already worse off and therefore cannot be burdened further with such astronomical increases in fuel prices as this negatively impacts on the cost of living. In short, the income of workers are really not increasing but the steep rise in prices of essential commodities is making it so unbearable for the citizenry to cope under the economy. As a result of bad leadership under Akufo Addo and Bawumia, the level of frustration and discontent are fast spreading among the populace with increasing loss of confidence in the current administration. Members of the press gathered here, despite the announcement of a so-called 100 billion cedis “Obatampa Cares Programme” in the 2021 budget, the ordinary Ghanaian is today faced with unprecedented hardship, suffering and excruciating poverty with no hope in sight. The current state of the Ghanaian economy clearly signals complete despair, characterized by a mounting unsustainable debt level which threatens the very foundation of the economy. Is this what we were promised prior to the December 2020 elections. Rather than taking the necessary and pragmatic steps towards ameliorating the suffering of the citizenry from their harsh policies, the NPP government
John Jinapor explains why Minority failed to get 2021 budget rejected
The Member of Parliament of Yapei-Kusawgu, John Jinapor has attributed the inability of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to get the 2021 budget rejected by Parliament to the ill health of some of its members. Parliament on Friday approved the 2021 budget after voting following the Minority’s earlier disapproval of the outcome of the voice vote after calling for the rejection of the budget due to its tax components. But after the voting, 137 MPs were in favour of approving the budget as against 134 MPs voting against the budget . Speaking on Eyewitness News, however, the former deputy Power Minister said the members of the minority side of the house lacked the numbers as of the time of voting in the House since some of them were receiving treatment at the hospital. He said they cannot be blamed for the loss. “All of us present were whipped in line and that is why the Chief Whip ensured that everyone present voted in accordance with our position. Some of our people were in hospital. Everyone present voted in line. We lost three votes because they are in hospitals. We tried bringing them, but there was no way we could bring them.” “I don’t think we can be held so much liable and create the impression that the NDC minority must necessarily win every voting in the chamber. Assuming everybody was present and were all available, and we all voted, we still might not have carried the day. This is not a secret ballot.” Meanwhile, ahead of the approved budget’s appropriation sittings at the Finance Committee level, John Jinapor assured of the caucus’ commitment to do more scrutiny that will serve the interest of Ghanaians. “The Finance Committee will sit down and look at all the approvals and even the taxes we are kicking against. All of that will be considered at the committee level, so we will do our best. We will serve the party and Ghana at large but when it comes to voting, we do so in our respective positions and that is what we did on Friday,” he added. citinewsroom Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Muntaka, Sam George and Jinapor should apologize for their regrettable conducts
Dr. John Osei Bobbie a political expert said, the Parliament Clerk must take a share of the blame for the disgrace the world witnessed in the chamber of Ghana parliament on January 6, 2021 midnight. According to Dr. Osei Bobbie, the clerk did not exhibit all the powers entrusted to him to ensure that law and order prevail in the house of parliament. He made the revelation during an exclusive interview with Apexnewsgh.com. “The clerk himself did not perform. He did not act accordingly, because you see, at that moment he was the man in authority. He had all the powers entrusted to him to ensure that law and order prevail in the house. Some incidents, some utterances that came up show that some people are really ignorant about the laws themselves yet they are there to enact laws for Ghanaians. The interpretation of some implementation of the injunction order. I look at the Constitution and I was so sad.” However, Dr. Osei Bobbie welcomed the apology rendered by Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah over his ballot snatching misconduct, insisting that Sam George, Muntaka, and John Jinapor should equally do the same. “If the national laws will not be applicable on the floor of the house then, the standing orders must apply accordingly. I will simply say that Carlos has gone to some length to acknowledge the fact that what he did was wrong, I am expecting the others to do the same Muntaka, Sam George, and Jinapor to do the same because they took us for granted. The ballot boxes that were booted symbolizes the nation Ghana”.
