Asiedu Nketia is NDC Chairman-elect after landslide win over Ofosu Ampofo

Johnson Asiedu Nketia is the Chairman-elect of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The 65-year-old politician secured 65.17% of the votes to eliminate competition at the ongoing 2022 National Delegates Congress of the Party. Popularly known as General Mosquito, Mr Asiedu Nketia relinquished his 17-year reign as the NDC’s General Secretary to run for the Chairmanship role. About an hour to the end of the collation, Mr Ofosu Ampofo was spotted leaving the stadium in his vehicle. Ahead of the polls, the General Secretary bade farewell to his members and urged all to forgive any transgressions that may have emanated from his office while serving as the chief scribe. “Those I’ve offended, may the Lord touch your hearts to forgive me. The credit I have made so far is shared and attributed to the footsoldiers of this party,” the party firebrand said on Saturday. The others in the chairmanship race also include Samuel Yaw Adusei and Nii Armah Ashietey. They secured 0.61% and 0.44% votes respectively at the end of the polls. Alhassan Suhuyini, Member of Parliament for Tamale North is alleging that President Akufo-Addo’s dialogues with the Majority Caucus is to buy the Finance Minister time to cover up some alleged financial crimes. Mr. Suhuyini said the majority members of Parliament calling for Ken Ofori-Atta’s sacking must be vigilant and not allow President Akufo-Addo deceive them to buy time for his cousin. He spoke on Good Morning Ghana. Mr. Suhuyini sighted conflict of interest allegations against the Finance Minister, as Un-constitutional withdrawals from the Consolidated Fund, illegal payment of oil revenues into offshore accounts, in flagrant violation of Article 176 of the 1992 Constitution among others. “If we are here because he took bad decisions to bring us here, why should we trust his decision in IMF Negotiations? You should not be comfortable to allow him lead us into IMF.” He said. “You should not be giving him time to take the skeletons out of the cupboard… I know my colleagues on the majority side have endured him for too long but they must act on principle and not waiver. There are concerns within their party so they must fight Ken Ofori-Atta based on principles.” The Tamale North MP said. “If you’re willing to give him time to take us through IMF when all his previous decisions are suspect, then may be you are giving him time to cover up” he kept insisting.“The majority must stay committed to rescuing this country. Don’t disenfranchise prospective voters under the guise of New C.I. – NDC to EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned the Electoral Commission to pull the brakes on implementing the Ghana Card as the sole document for the registration and acquisition of a voter’s ID card. Addressing a press conference today, the National Chairman of the party, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said the elimination of the use of passports and the guarantor system is unconstitutional. He said if the C.I. is passed in its current form it will disenfranchise prospective voters who for no fault of theirs are unable to obtain the national ID card issued by the NIA. The largest opposition party, therefore, threatened to employ all legitimate means including mass action to block the move should the EC refuse to heed the warning.”We will mobilize the broad masses of Ghanaians to wage a sustained and unrelenting campaign to prevent any attempt by the EC to strip large sections of the population of their right to vote. “The Ghana card is a new feature of our national life and cannot immediately become the only means to identify a Ghanaian only because it plays into the hands of the NPP whose members constitute the leadership of both the National Identification Authority and the EC.”
