The Upper East Regional Peace Council, feeling the weight of the situation, expressed its profound sadness over the renewed violence. Chairman Alhaji Sumaila Issaka emphasized the importance of peaceful dialogue, particularly as the nation approaches general elections and traditional festivities like Samanpiid and Buud Yelle.

The clashes have taken a grave toll, leading to loss of life and stoking fear among residents. The violence has also disrupted the Bolgatanga-Tamale Highway, amplifying concerns for safety in the region. While previous celebrations had unfolded peacefully, the atmosphere has drastically shifted since late October 2024.

In light of these events, the Peace Council acknowledged the commitment of various stakeholders, highlighting the efforts of security personnel and the local communities in aiming for calm. However, the Council called for immediate and proactive measures to ensure the safety of all residents.

Key elements of concern surrounding the conflict include the tragic loss of lives, the pervasive climate of fear, and the detrimental impact on economic activities. As tensions remain, the proximity to the borders of Burkina Faso and Togo raises additional worries about the potential spillover of violent extremism.

In their statement, the Council made a heartfelt plea for collective action. They called upon all parties involved to embrace nonviolent approaches, urged security services to enhance their proactive measures, and encouraged local residents to support law enforcement efforts.

The overarching message from the Upper East Regional Peace Council underscores a united commitment to restore peace and stability in Bawku. With the looming threat of violence not only within the region but also from neighboring countries, the Council’s focus remains on de-escalating hostilities and fostering peace through community engagement and conflict prevention initiatives.
