The opposition National Democratic Congress in the Upper East welcomes President Akufo Addo in the Region as they use the opportunity to remind the President some of his numerous promises made the people of the Upper East Region. The NDC- Upper East Region warmly welcomes President Akufo-Addo into the Region for his two day tour of the Region. Whilst welcoming the President into the Region, we would like to use the opportunity to remind the President of some of his numerous promises made to the people of the Upper East Region. And knowing that he has been in government for nearly four years, with just two months to elections, we wish that he would indulge us and commission the following projects in the Region for use: 1. He should commission a 1V1D in Bongo: A project he cut sod for on 20th July 2018. As it may be recalled on the 20th Akufo-Adddo, at a durbur of chiefs in Bongo cut sod for the 1V1D project. As part of his address, after the sod-cutting, the President said the Bongo District will be given 10 of the small scale irrigation Dams. 2. A senior High School in the Upper East Region. As our share of the 350 S.H.S. he promised us at UDS-Navrongo Campus in 2016. In 2016, at UDS-Navrongo campus Akufo-Addo promised to build 350 SHSs in the first 18 months of his government. 3. Commission 15 factories in all the 15 Assemblies of the Upper East Region. . Whilst we are not oblivious of the fact that the Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyeremanten, said in Parliament on 8th November 2018, that no business promotor or investor is interested in the Upper East Region. We will expect Akufo-Addo to commission at least one(1) factory in the Upper East Region as part our share of 1District 1Factory Policy. 4. Commission a Regional theatre in Bolgatanga, the regional capital of the Upper East Region. As he promised in their 2016 manifesto. 5. Commission a Police Hospital in Bolgatanga for the Ghana Police Service, to cater for the health needs of police personnel and the people of Upper East Region. As promised in the NPP’s 2016 manifesto. 6. Commission a District Hospital in the Upper East Region, as our share of the 1District 1Hospital promise in the NPP 2016 manifesto. There are seven districts that still do not have district hospitals. 7. Commission the mechanism that their 2016 manifesto promised to put in place to capture flood waters released by the annual spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. 8. Commission the Kumasi – Paga railway project they promised the people of the Upper East Region in their 2016 manifesto. 9. EndSARS: Naira Marley cancels planned protest
A controversial Nigerian singer, Azeez Adeshina Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley has cancelled #EndSars protest scheduled to hold today Tuesday, October 6. Following a statement made by the Inspector General of Police, informing Nigerian youths that their complaints on the issues on ground are being looked into, the singer took to Twitter to announce the new development. “We won’t be protesting anymore because there’s a lot of changes being made right now. Authorities to investigate ‘rogue’ Nigerian force
Nigeria’s police affairs minister says that there will be an investigation into alleged infractions by a notorious unit in the police force that has been accused of atrocities against innocent civilians and routine harassment. On Sunday, Nigeria’s inspector general of police Mohammed Adamu banned the Special Anti Robbery Squad (Sars) from carrying out stop and search duties and setting up roadblocks. The hashtag #EndSARS had been trending on Twitter, triggered by the alleged killing of a young man by officers from the unit in the city of Lagos on Saturday. Read the full detail: Works to begin on three airstrips Joseph Kofi Adda, Aviation Minister Mon, 28 Sep 2020Source: Business 24 Works are expected to begin next month on three airstrips—Yendi, Navrongo, and Mole—for which funds have been secured. The three airstrips are part of about 34 airstrips and airports in the country that are mostly non-active and need revamping to become suitable for commercial passenger operations. After visits to the Kete-Krachi, Mole, Navrongo and Yendi airstrips by the Aviation Minister and technical persons from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the three locations were found most suitable to be immediately revamped. This is because the airstrips were found intact with little or no encroachment, had enough space for the extension of the runway’s length and width, and the traditional rulers and opinion leaders of the area were supportive and willing to help government secure the sites. The Yendi and Navrongo airstrips, for instance, have been in existence since 1940 and were used as strategic airstrips by the National Guard which defended part of the country’s northern border during the Second World War. The Yendi airstrip has a length of 1,500 metres and has enough land for the runway to be extended, and the current width extended to 300-150 metres on each side of the runway. Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Adda told Busines24 in Yendi that: “The President has directed us to construct as many airports and airstrips as possible to boost business and improve tourism. “The Yendi airstrip has been in existence since the 1940s. Fortunately, the encroachment is not too much. There is still a lot of land for us to expand the width by 150 metres on each side. We will have to add 300 metres to the existing 1,500 metre-long runway to bring it up to 1,800 metres. A double seal of the runway will also be done so that light passenger aircraft can safely operate to Yendi. “This is something that can be done in a month or two for us to open up the Eastern side of Dagbon.” A visit by Business24 to the Navrongo airstrip showed that the decades-old airstrip is still intact, well compacted and used frequently by the Ghana Air Force. It currently measures 1,500 metres long and 24 metres wide. On the development of the airstrips, the Minister stated: “Designs have been done, feasibility completed, funding has been secured, and we are waiting for the signing of the commercial agreement. The sponsors have come with funds to show what they have available and the Minister for Finance has looked at it and it’s fairly reasonable to us. NAGRAT Warns Government and GES For Re-opening Schools
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has said it does not want to see a second wave of COVID-19 infections in Ghana as is happening in other parts of the world. The association has for that matter urged heads of various schools to ensure that the necessary safety measures and protocols are put in place to safeguard the welfare of students and teachers as second-year junior and senior high students return to school to complete their academic year. The decision was taken by the Ghana Education Service after consultations with the relevant stakeholders. The students will remain in school until 14 December 2020. Announcing this in his 16th COVID-19 address to the nation on Sunday, 30 August 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said: “With Junior High Schools operating with class sizes of thirty (30), and Senior High Schools with class sizes of twenty-five (25), SHS 2 and JHS 2 students will be in school for ten (10) weeks to study, and write their end of term examinations”. In a press release captured by Apexnewsgh.com has it that, Chiefs and people of Sumburungu and Sherigu in Bolgatanga Municipal of the Upper East Region has registered some level of dissatisfaction with the pronouncement they claimed was made by the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Cental who doubles as the Aviation Minister Mr. Kofi Joseph Adda regard the embattled Upper East Airport project. According to the Chiefs and people of Sumburungu and Sherigu, while they patiently await the arrival of the President’s Independent Committee of Aviation Experts, the Aviation Minister, has gone ahead to contravene and set aside President Akufo Addo’s promise to the paramount Chiefs. They said, in a publication dated Tuesday 29th September, 2020, the Hon. Aviation Minister stated in Yendi, that an expert team from GCCA had visited the Navrongo site and recommended its development into a commercial airport and that funding had been secured to commence work. A pronouncement they described as unexpected and a surprise to the chiefs and people of both Sumburungu and Sherigu community. However, they are hopeful that President Akufo Addo will not disappoint them on his promises. “We know Nana Akufo Addo is a man of his word and trust him to live up to his promise. Accordingly, we have good reason to doubt the authenticity of the said Hon. Aviation Minister’s GCAA team that he claims had visited and made recommendations for the continuation of work on the Paga Airstrip.
