The Member of Parliament for Builsa North Constituency James Agalga of the Upper East Region, said he is heartbroken with the recent insecurity happenings in the country. Mr. Agalga who was speaking in an interview on Bolgatanga based A1 radio’s ‘Daybreak Upper East’ monitored by Apexnewsgh.com lamented that the unprecedented attacks, robbery and murder the country has witnessed recent times is becoming alarming. He said, even though all these murders and attacks are witnessed under the leadership of President Akufo Addo, no single soul had been brought to justice as a result of the heinous crime. However, Mr Agalga also blamed the Police for not helping matters, claiming that most of the vigilantes that are been trained are responsible for the ongoing robbery and attacks. He believes the moral of Police Service in the very is very low, “they speak to me every time because am their ranking member, so I know how low their morale is”. The mode of recruitment must be transparent, because they always recruit vigilantes just like the likes of DOUBLE and co as National Security officials” Mr. Agalga also pointed that murder and armed robbery has seen an increase to about 27% percent compared to the prevailing situation during the John Dramani Mahama government in 2016. “I presented the evidence to the Speaker in Parliament, murder and armed robbery has increased to about 27% compared to the prevailing situation in 2016.” “Lives are been lost every now and then.” He added However, he called on government to improve the general security situation of the country to enhance citizen’s protection. “Let us improve general security situation of our country, so that citizens will be protected”
NPP confirms wife of murdered Mfantseman MP as parliamentary candidate
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has settled on Ophelia Hayford to succeed her murdered husband Ekow Quansah Hayford as the parliamentary candidate for the Mfantseman Constituency. In a letter sighted by Ghanaweb, the party called on the Electoral Commission to allow a 10-day extension of the nomination period within which the wife of the late Ekow Quansah Hayford would file her nomination. This is in accordance to portions of C1 127 which states “Where at the close of the nomination, but before the election one of the candidate dies, a further period of 10 days shall be allowed for nominations.” The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, Ekow Quansah Hayford, was shot by suspected armed robbers on the Abeadze Dominase–Abeadze Duadzi–Mankessim road while returning from a campaign trip on Friday, October 9, 2020, around 1:00 am. It was reported that despite indicating that he was an MP when he was attacked, the assailants went ahead to shoot him. During Akufo-Addo’s visit to the house of the late MP, on Monday, the people chanted “No Wife, No Vote” as a sign of solidarity and support for her. While the executive of the constituency decided on nominating his wife to contest, the National Executive Council earlier said a decision was yet to be made. However, a letter to the EC by the party confirms NEC has decided to allow the wife of the late MP Ophelia Hayford to contest the Mfantseman Constituency seat. Deploying 200 armed police bodyguards for MPs an ambush on the citizens – Security Expert
Security and safety analyst, Adam Bona, has described the move by the government to deploy 200 police officers as armed bodyguards for Members of Parliament (MPs) as an ambush on the citizens. “This amounts to something one will call a security ambush; where the MPs have decided to ambush Ghanaians who put them there. At the most critical moment they decided to ambush us and also throw it at our face and tell us that probably in the scheme of things even though sovereignty resides in the people, we don’t really, matter that much”. Adam Bona said this in an interview with GBC radio programme Behind the News monitored by MyNewsGH.com. Government through the Interior Ministry on Tuesday as a matter of urgency provided 200 policemen to serve as bodyguards for Members of Parliament (MPs) who say they are living in fear following the murder of their colleague. The Interior Minister Ambrose Dery speaking to the Parliamentary Press Corp said, “Due to the retooling of the security agencies by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the country has more security agencies and security personnel available. So we have proposed that, between now and the end of the year, we are going to provide an additional 200 police personnel to be part of the parliamentary protection unit. We are making this arrangement to ensure that the unit attains the status of divisional police command to take care of the Member of Parliament as bodyguards”. However, responding to the issue on the state broadcaster, security analyst Mr. Bona sharply described the move as an “ambush on the citizens” because since it is an executive decision, citizens cannot do anything about it. “When it comes to issues on their (MPs) interest, they stand shoulder to shoulder with the executive. But on issues relating to the provision of water, electricity, roads, health facilities to increase the citizens standard of living they work at slow pace”, Mr. Bona said. “Where a community is being beaten by security by hoodlums and this becomes a security matter and we tend to raise it, you would see either the NPP is saying that no the police is doing well and the NDC if they are in opposition, will say that the police is not doing well”, he added. After four kids, I am not ready for marriage – Kumawood actress
Fast rising Kumawood actress, Akua Adwubi Kete has stated that she has no plans of getting married after having four kids from two different men. Large fiscal benefits projected from proposed petroleum hub
Ghana is expected to rake in US$1.56bn in export tax revenue by 2030 from the development of a petroleum hub to add value to the country’s petroleum resources. The projection was contained in the report of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy on the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation Bill 2020. The purpose of the bill is to establish the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation to promote and develop a petroleum and petrochemicals hub in the country. Speaking during the second reading of the bill on Tuesday, a Deputy Minister for Energy, Joseph Cudjoe, said the hub will propel a 130 percent increase in GDP through the injection of US$60bn worth of investments into Ghana’s economy by the year 2030. The development of the hub will include construction of key infrastructure such as jetties, storage tanks, refineries, an LNG facility, power plants, and infrastructure for offshore activities. The project is expected to contribute enormously to economic growth through value addition to petroleum resources and job creation. The hub, the report said, will drive the growth of various industries including petrochemicals and create 780,000 direct and indirect jobs. Other anticipated benefits are tax receipts from downstream value chain operations and the provision of basic social amenities, such as schools, health facilities and leisure parks. The establishment of a public corporation to oversee the development of the hub will provide the needed confidence to potential investors who are desirous of investing in it, the report said. Government is expected to contribute US$6bn of the total investment target of US$60bn, with private capital providing the remainder. The government will also provide the initial basic infrastructure, including land, road and railway networks, water and electricity. Gov’t targets GH¢22.19bn in new debt issuance
Government is projecting to issue domestic debt securities of a gross amount of GH¢22.19bn in the last quarter of the year, according to the latest debt issuance calendar from the Finance Ministry. The securities will cover government’s borrowing requirements for the period, the Ministry said. Of the gross amount to be raised, about GH¢19.67bn is to roll over maturities, whereas the remaining GH¢2.52bn will be fresh issuance to meet government’s financing requirements. So far this year, government has issued a total debt of about GH¢45.68bn on the domestic market, according to the issuance results published by the central bank. This amount is made up of both securities meant to roll over maturities and fresh issuances. Based on the new issuance calendar, domestic portfolio investors will be able to invest up to GH¢13.35bn in short-term government debt securities, comprising tenors of 91 days, 182 days and 364 days, to be issued during the period. This category is reserved strictly for domestic investors. The remaining portion of the securities of about GH¢8.84bn, comprising debt securities with tenors from two years up to 20 years, will be made accessible to non-resident investors. This category of investors mostly dominates subscriptions of such medium- to long-term issuances. Amounts of GH¢9.7bn, GH¢1.75bn and GH¢1.9bn have been planned to be issued for the 91-day, 182-day, and 364-day bills, respectively, while GH¢3.7bn and GH¢2.9bn have been planned to be issued for the 2-year notes and 3-year bonds. Amounts of GH¢1bn and GH¢950m have been planned for the 5-year and 7-year bonds, respectively. An amount of GH¢287.87m of a 20-year bond will be re-opened based on investors’ request and dependent on market conditions, the Ministry said. SEC issues new minimum capital requirement for operators
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has on Tuesday, October 13 issued new capital requirements for market operators in the Ghanaian capital market industry. The new directive in accordance with Section 209 of the Securities Industry Act 2016, (Act 929) is in line with the Commission’s mandate of regulating and promoting the growth and development of an efficient, fair and transparent securities market in which investors and the integrity of the market are protected. The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Reverend Daniel Ogbarmey Tetteh, speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Ghana Securities Industry Association (GSIA) in Accra, remarked that the new minimum capital requirements for market operators were expected to be in force by end of next year, therefore existing market operators would be expected to be fully compliant by December 31, 2021. New entrants would be required to meet the new requirements immediately, Reverend Ogbarmey said, further noting that the new capital requirement contained in the just-released licensing requirements guidelines for market operators should come as no surprise to the market as the new capital threshold had been discussed extensively with market operators in the capital market industry. In addition to the new licensing guidelines, the Commission has also issued other guidelines to steer the operations and activities of market operators.
