We don’t have money to monitor December polls – CSOs
Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are sounding the alarm bells over their inability to adequately monitor the upcoming December 7 elections. They believe that their inability to monitor the polls will adversely affect the fairness of the elections. The CSOs are blaming the development on lack of funds as a result of dwindling donor support. Speaking at a forum organized by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on Civil Society Organizations and Democratic Elections in Ghana: The 2020 Election in Focus, Director of Programs at IDEG Kwesi Jonah blamed COVID-19 for the financial difficulties CSOs are going through. He nonetheless assured that they will do their best in spite of the constraints. “This time around we have cut down substantially on the number of observers that we are going to put into the field now…in this context civil societies are a bit incapacitated to play the roles that we played in previous elections.” At the same event, the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs is demanding immediate Constitutional Amendment to cater for newly created regions in the appointment of members of the council of state. According to the Same MP the Constitution in its current form makes room for 10 representatives from each region. Speaking at the event, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu disclosed he’s drawn President Akufo-Addo’s attention to the development. Are we alone in the universe?
Greg Odogwu A fortnight ago, the Pentagon, that is, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defence, officially released three videos depicting encounters between American Navy pilots and unidentified aerial phenomena. The videos show what appear to be Unidentified Flying Objects rapidly moving while recorded by infrared cameras. Two of the videos contain service members reacting in awe at how quickly the objects are moving. Ordinarily, this action would not raise any eyebrows, considering that America has the biggest military establishment with a busy fleet that should invariably have innumerable encounters. However, it sent shock waves around the world – as it was instantly reported by big-time news channels like the BBC, CNN, New York Times, The Guardian (London), among others. On the surface, the report looks ordinary, but underneath, there is a heavy psychological score which the development has touched, and which will definitely set off some other global developments, all things being equal. For many of us in the developing world, however, the dynamics is not that obvious; unless one has a background knowledge of what the “UFO encounter” is all about. An Unidentified Flying Object is any aerial phenomenon that cannot immediately be identified. The term is widely used for claimed observations of extraterrestrial spacecraft (that is, a vehicle from another planet or parallel universe). The Pentagon video sparked global interest because, whereas many people believe that the UFOs are actual otherworldly spaceship, the world government(s) has been solidly skeptical of this phenomenon. As a matter of fact, you were seen as either crazy or a conspiracy theorist, if you came out publicly with the story that you were a believer or an ‘experiencer’ in such UFO occurrence. The encounters are graded into categories, from Encounters of the First Kind, to the Fifth Kind – where the individual has physical one-on-one contact with beings inside the UFO. Interestingly, with its terse and diplomatically couched statement at the UFO video release, the Pentagon may have just given its imprimatur to the UFO sightings. No one is sure why it is making this move at this time, but the motive would soon be clear. The three videos actually occurred in 2004 and 2015, but the videos did not publicly surface until The New York Times included them with a front-page story about the Pentagon’s “mysterious UFO programme” in 2017. The Navy previously acknowledged that the videos are authentic, but the Pentagon never authorised them for release. Now, three years later, the US DOD finally authorised the video; not minding that they have already been watched by millions of people. The Pentagon stated in a press release on Monday, April 27, “After a thorough review, the department has determined that the authorised release of these unclassified videos does not reveal any sensitive capabilities or systems, and does not impinge on any subsequent investigations of military air space incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena.” Just days after the US DOD statement, Japan’s Defence Ministry decided to draw up protocols for potential encounters with the UFOs. According to the Japanese Defence Minister, Taro Kono, the SDF pilots have never encountered the UFOs, but the ministry has decided to “set protocols with an aim to cover the possibility”. Naturally, such possibilities have always existed, but because America officially denied or hushed it, mum was the word in the global defence sector. To be sure, in 2008, the UK made public its UFO files, via ufos.nationalarchives.gov.uk <http://nationalarchives.gov.uk/ufos/>. But now that the number one defence establishment in the world has pointed to the skies, there is no doubt that nations around the world will start coming out. In fact, some celebrities – like footballer Jozy Altidore – in reaction to Pentagon’s expose, are already tweeting, “Are aliens out there?” An American lawmaker, Senator Harry Reid, wrote, “I’m glad the Pentagon is finally releasing this footage, but it only scratches the surface of research and materials available. The US needs to take a serious, scientific look at this and any potential national security implications. The American people deserve to be informed.” I, for one, am very excited that such a window has been opened by no other than the almighty American defence authorities. I am aware that this only touches the periphery of what is really at stake; but given the research mentality of the West, this window is enough to begin the “alien/UFO disclosure” the world has been earnestly yearning for. The age-old question, “Are we alone in the universe?”, may now be answered in the negative. Before now, many analysts had opined that it was too risky to disclose the true state of things to the man in the street. They said that it would upset the world stock market, cause mass hysteria, and uproot our entrenched social and religious roots. Many feared it would come at a great price to civilisation as we know it. Nevertheless, it is now becoming obvious that such unveiling of hidden scientific reality is long overdue. Even the citizens in the most remote environments are already prepped and ready for a “change” in the psycho-social make-up of their existence, without even knowing what they expect. The truth is that when you think about it, one just realises that we are ready for whatever is out there. Nothing will shock the humankind! At the beginning of the 20th century, scientists were extremely skeptical about the existence of life anywhere else in the universe. But from the 1960s, most scientists began to hold the opinion that thousands of other planets in the universe are probably inhabited. As you read this piece, the biggest machine in the world – a contraption known as Large Hadron Collider, built in Geneva to search for living matter in unseen planes of reality – is, in a layman’s words, about to open the door which “separates the world of the living and the dead”. I am also convinced that even the religious community is ready for a grand ‘Revelation’. Let us think about it
Former Ghana trainer Avram Grant eulogizes Thomas Partey’s talent
Former Chelsea FC and Ghana manager Avram Grant has said Thomas Partey has become a better player for his great talent and the right mentality. Grant, who gave new Arsenal star his first Ghana cap in 2017 is impressed with Partey’s growth in all areas of his game. Partey completed a move to Arsenal FC on the transfer deadline day last week in a deal worth €50 million from Atletico Madrid. “When you have the talent and the right mentality and the coach gives you the chance to play, you will improve. West Ham fan banned from football for 3 years for racially abusing Mohammed Salah
A West Ham supporter has been banned from football for three years after pleading guilty to racially abusing Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah. The 48-year old Bradley Thumwood from Bexleyheath, appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to a racially aggravated Section 5 public order offence, the Metropolitan Police said. He was issued with a three-year football banning order, fined £400 and also ordered to pay a victim surcharge and costs amounting to £125. Thumwood had been summonsed in July after being identified by officers during West Ham’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool on January 29. West Ham are to offer Thumwood educational sessions to try to reform his views, “whilst reserving the right to uphold indefinite bans, should those efforts prove unsuccessful.” A West Ham spokesperson said in a press release from the Metropolitan Police: “West Ham United is unequivocal in its stance – we have a zero-tolerance approach to any form of discrimination. “Equality and diversity are at the heart of the football club and we are committed to continue ensuring that everyone who enters London Stadium is free to enjoy watching their team play football in an inclusive environment. “The club works closely with Kick It Out and our fan group BAME Hammers. In conjunction with those parties, the club will offer educational sessions to the individual in question in an effort to reform their views, whilst reserving the right to uphold their indefinite bans, should those efforts prove unsuccessful.” The Metropolitan Police’s dedicated football officer PC Andy Sheldon said: “We do not, and will not tolerate hate crime of any kind at football matches and will take action against those who are found to have committed these kinds of crimes during games. “We are committed to working closely with football clubs to identify anyone behaving inappropriately and breaking the law. Gyan and Yeboah tied for Ghana’s greatest ever striker : Odartey-Lamptey
Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey believes Anthony Yeboah and Asamoah Gyan are inseparable as far as the debate on who Ghana’s greatest ever striker is. Major (Rtd) Derek Oduro Accuses Media Of Inciting The Public Against MPs
Major (Rtd) Derek Oduro, the Deputy Defence Minister, has chastised the media for inciting the general public against MPs. According to the Deputy Defence Minister who is also the MP for Nkoranza North, MPs were voted for by the general public and they deserve to be loved by the public that gave them the mandate to represent them in Parliament and not to be hated by them. “…As if we are from the Congo River Basin who have been brought to come and put down here to serve the nation. Meanwhile, you voted for us, you’re supposed to love us, get us closer to you but you hate parliamentarians and it is partly because some of you the media you incite the general public against us. We must be frank,” Major (Rtd) Derek Oduro told the Parliamentary Press Corps on Wednesday. Major (Rtd) Derek Oduro’s comment follows the decision by the Interior Minister to assign personal police protection to MPs following the unfortunate murder of the Mfantseman MP last Friday dawn. Ambrose Dery assured the MPs that 200 police personnel would be deployed to the Parliamentary Protection Unit to serve as bodyguards for MPs from October till the end of the year. He said just like other state officials who are given special privileges under Article 71 of the Constitution, including judges, ministers of state, the Speaker and the leadership of Parliament, the 200 additional police officers will “take care of Members of Parliament”. “Subsequently, we should have 800 police added so that each Member of Parliament will also have security at home in the day and night,” Ambrose Dery added. This decision has been met with different reactions from the general public, with some individuals saying that every citizen deserves to be protected by the police and not only the political class. Col. Festus Aboagye, a Security Analyst, speaking on Accra-based Joy FM mentioned that the move will consequently reduce the number of available personnel for patrols and visibility duties. But Major Oduro insisted that the police service have enough police personnel to provide security for MPs and provide security for Ghanaians at large. He questioned how many MPs should be killed aside the deceased Ekow Quansah Hayford and JB Danquah Adu before “we ask for this personal security for MPs?” He argued that Ghanaians should not be annoyed that MPs are requesting for personal police protection. “Almost 2000 Police recruits passed out last week like they do every other six months. If the Interior Minister says there will be no challenges faced over the deployment of 200 men to serve as guards to MPs, I see no cause to worry because he is in contact with the [Ghana] Police Service,” Major (Rtd) Oduro emphasized. Major Oduro noted that MPs make laws and are not responsible for the killings in the country, therefore, the argument that until the whole country is safe before they get personal protection is irrelevant. He added that it is their duty as MPs to question sector ministers on the happenings in the country. “We don’t have cane here to whip sector ministers. We draw the attention for you and for me and for everybody and they sit up,” an unhappy Major (Rtd) Derek Oduro stated. Police chase Asamoah, Baffour Gyan for assaulting tennis player
Former Black Stars player Baffour Gyan is wanted by police for allegedly assaulting Godwin Martey, the Chief Executive Officer of Web Soft Solutions. The two were part of a tennis training match, which involved the brother of Baffour, Asamoah, the former captain of the Black Stars. A police report sighted by 3news.com indicates that Godwin, 35, was slapped and hit at his left shoulder by Baffour, who was umpiring Wednesday’s match. The complainant wanted to quit the game after feeling unfairly treated by umpire Baffour in the match against Asamoah. But his attempt to complain led to the alleged assault. Akufo-Addo’s ministers sharing contracts to their children who contribute nothing to NPP – Angry Agyapong
