One shot dead, others injured in gun attack at Fanteakwa
One person has been shot dead while three others are seriously injured in a gun attack on the Miaso to Akanteng road in the Fanteakwa North District of the Eastern Region. The incident occurred Wednesday dawn at about 4:30 am. A resident told Starr News that unknown gunmen ambushed and opened fire on a truck which was transporting cattle to Akanteng. He said the driver’s mate who was sitting at the bucket of the truck with three other fulani herdsmen were hit by the bullet but the driver’s mate died instantly. The three wounded persons have been admitted at the Begoro District Hospital receiving treatment. The gun attack has been linked to feud between farmers and herdsmen in the area. The feud has led to several fatal attacks between herdsmen and farmers. The latest attack believed to have been targeted at the herdsmen may trigger a reprisal attack from the Fulani community if the security fail to act swiftly. Pension scheme for 1.5 million cocoa farmers launched
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, 1 December 2020, launched a pension scheme for the country’s 1.5 million cocoa farmers. According to President Akufo-Addo, “the pension scheme will enable cocoa farmers to make voluntary contributions towards their retirement, while COCOBOD makes a supplementary contribution on behalf of the farmers as well.” This, he explained, “guarantees a decent retirement income for cocoa farmers for life, and ensures that they can maintain decent livelihoods after retirement.” Launching the pension scheme at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi, as part of his 3-day tour of the Ashanti Region, President Akufo-Addo said there are millions of cocoa farmers across the country who are responsible for the production of a crop that has, for over a century, been the mainstay of the economy of the country. In recognition of their hard work, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) was mandated, under Section twenty-six (26) of the COCOBOD Law, 1984 (PNDC L.81), to establish a Contributory Insurance Scheme for Cocoa Farmers within the framework of the Social Security Scheme, so that they could also enjoy a well-deserved pension, upon retirement. Unfortunately, successive governments, for various reasons, were unable to fulfil this, much to the disapproval of cocoa farmers who continued to make demands for the establishment of the “Cocoa Farmers Pension Scheme”. “As candidate Akufo-Addo, in the run-up to the December 2016 elections, I made a solemn pledge to cocoa farmers that, if the Ghanaian people reposed their confidence in me, and I won the election of 2016, my government would establish the pension scheme for them not just in fulfilment of the legal requirement, but also in line with Government’s plans to improve the living standards of cocoa farmers in Ghana,” he said. Upon his assumption of office, the President tasked the CEO of COCOBOD, Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, to begin to work earnestly with the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) and other stakeholders to set up a Cocoa Farmers Pension Scheme to support cocoa farmers enjoy a decent pension. “Through the shared determination and expertise of those I put in charge to ensure the establishment of the scheme, both the legal framework and the technical structures have been put in place for the smooth take-off of this all-important scheme,” he said. To ensure the successful rollout of the scheme, COCOBOD is embarking on a census to collect data on farmers for the Cocoa Management System (CMS), adding that “the CMS will hold a robust database of all cocoa farmers in the country, and track their contributions. Manasseh reveals more ‘frightening’ details about Osafo Maafo, Domelevo ‘fight’
Ace investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has said that the case involving the Auditor-General Yaw Domelevo and Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo is more ‘frightening’ than he initially assumed. Professor Edward Duah Agyemang, Manasseh claims, also head’s the board that requested President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to force Domelevo to go on leave. “After thoroughly reading documents, court judgment and rulings, the Auditor-General’s issue is worse than I thought. Sickening!” he posted. “The government said the decision to force the Auditor-General to go on leave was recommended by the Board of the Audit Service. The Board Chairman of the Audit Service, Prof. Edward Duah Agyeman, was the one representing Yaw Osafo-Maafo in the Kroll Associates court case involving the Auditor-General and Osafo-Maafo. “And the Auditor-General was expected to take orders from Board Chairman who was representing his opponent in the court case.” “Let that drama sink in.” Manasseh also took issues with the Supreme Court with some conclusions it made on the case. Manasseh cited that the Supreme Court failed to rule on the case that was referred to it by the High Court and passed a different verdict. “But the critical question should go to the Supreme Court. The High Court asked the Supreme Court to rule on whether the documents Osafo-Maafo was keeping from the Auditor-General were “confidential and prejudicial to national security’. That was the only reason the case was referred to the Supreme Court.” “So why did the Supreme Court fail to rule on that, but instead, ordered the Auditor-General to inspect within 10 days?
