NDC protesters clash with police at EC Headquarters
Persons believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have clashed with police at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) following a protest by the former. Sympathizers of the NDC have since the declaration of the results for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections been staging a series of demonstrations in protest of what they describe a “stolen verdict” for President Akufo-Addo. The latest of such demonstrations saw hundreds of party supporters clad in red and black attires, wielding sticks and placards heading to the Electoral Commission in Accra. JUST IN: 26 NDC supporters arrested for unlawful protests
The Ghana Police Service has arrested 26 persons among protesters near the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) headquarters in Accra on Thursday, December 17. The protesters, mainly supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were reported to have thronged major streets leading to the Commission’s head office and burnt car tyres, pelted stones, and thereby causing heavy vehicular traffic and congestion. The police, however, managed to disperse the crowd “using a non-lethal riot control management approach and arrested twenty-six (26) protestors in the process”. The party has been protesting results of the December 7 elections, which they claim were declared in favour of the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP). A news release issued by DSP Effia Tenge of the Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit said all the suspects are being taken through due process and provisionally cautioned on offences of Unlawful Assembly, Holding of Special Event without Notification and Obstruction. “Those found culpable would be arraigned,” the release said. Dagbon deserves cabinet Ministers – Group advocates
The people of Dagbon Traditional Area overwhelmingly voted for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the 2020 general elections. The NPP won nine out of the 18 Parliamentary seats in the Northern Region with majority of them in the Dagbon Traditional Area. These are Yendi, Mion, Nantong, Tolon, Gushiegu, Karaga, Tatale-Sanguli and Zabzugu in the Dagbon Kingdom and Bimbila constituency in the Nanung Traditional Area. President elect Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s votes increased by a satisfactory margin as compared to the 2016 polls. This accounts for a group calling itself, Dagbon Youth for Peace call for more cabinet ministerial positions for Dagombas in the next government. According to the group’s Chairman, Mohammed Nyaba, Dagombas really demonstrated their gratitude to Nana Addo’s government for the restoration of peace and unity in the Dagbon Kingdom. Sene West elections: Court throws out NPP suit against EC, NDC
The Wench High Court has thrown out a case brought before it by the New Patriotic Party against the Electoral Commission and the National Democratic Congress on the Sene West Parliamentary Elections. The court ruled that the said case lacks merit, reason it was dismissed. The NPP has also been fined an amount of GHS 20,000 for wasting the time of the court. The Sene West Constituency’s Tato battor polling station B ballot box is yet to be counted after one Christian Nukpeta snatched the ballot box when the election results were being counted. Although Christian Nukpeta was arrested immediately, the parties involved noticed that the seal of the ballot box belonging to the NPP had been removed, leaving that of the Electoral Comission and NDC. As a result, Lawyers for the NPP’s Sene West parliamentary candidate, Joseph Markay Kuma, immediately sought an injunction from the court to stop the EC from counting the ballot papers in the box. The ballot box was then locked up at the Techiman Police Headquarters. However, counsel for Joseph Markay Kuma withdrew their motion of injunction on the declaration of the results as filed in their petition. The court on Thursday quashed the case and by this, the EC can now go ahead to either count the snatched ballot box or conduct fresh elections in that polling station only. The Northern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress ( NDC), Ibrahim Mobila, has instructed the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, to within 2 days, declare former president John Dramani Mahama the president elect. Addressing the media during a demonstration in Tamale, he said the party will decide on what to do should Jean Mensa fail to change the results in favour of the NDC. “I am here to tell all the people in the Northern Region that we won the elections, we are begging the EC boss, she shouldn’t bring confusion into the country so we are telling her to come out immediately and change the results by Friday otherwise we will decide for our incoming President John Mahama,” he is quoted to have said, by Daily Guide Supporters of the National Democratic Congress have hit the streets of Tamale in the Northern Region to protest the declaration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as president-elect in the just-ended polls. The demonstration which was held at the city central recorded huge turnout as partakers chanted war songs. The National Vice Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Congress, Sofo Azorka, has also said the party will on January 7,2021, swear in John Dramani Mahama as president. “We are swearing John Mahama next month 7th January, at where they swear people in at Accra.” Meanwhile, this is not the first demonstration held by members of the opposition since results of the December 7 elections were announced by the electoral body. The first of many was after Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu told supporters the NDC does not accept the results of the presidential elections as announced by the Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) Jean Mensa. At a press conference, Haruna Iddrisu expressed reservations about the way and manner in which the polls were conducted hence, the rejection. “We reject the presidential elections as announced by the chair of the Electoral Commission. And we also want to serve notice that the blatant effort even to deny us of a parliamentary majority will be fiercely resisted,” the Tamale South lawmaker said. In Bolgatanga and Tamale, for instance, hundreds of supporters were seen on the streets burning car tyres in disapproval of the election results. Also, Ashiaman supporters and NDC Women wing also hit the streets Tuesday to express their displeasure as well as protest. The NDC, however, maintained that they intend to continuously hold a peace protest until their votes count. 3 killed, 10 houses burnt in Upper East following land dispute
Three persons are reported dead and at least 10 houses burnt at Kandiga and Doba communities, in the Kassena-Nankana West District and Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region, following renewed clashes over land. The police Kassena-Nankana Municipal Police Command had so far arrested 11suspects, and retrieved one pump action gun, three single barrel guns and twelve live carriages, from them. The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Francis Oppong Agyare, confirmed the story to the Ghanaian Times, here on Monday. He said when the police received a distress call on Saturday dawn that some houses were in flames in the conflict communities, they alerted the Ghana National Fire Service. DSP Agyare said normalcy had returned to the area, and people were going about their activities peacefully. He said the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) imposed curfew in the conflict areas since June, this year following land dispute. DSP Agyare said “the MUSEC has been managing the situation until Sunday when a 23-year-old man was murdered on his way to his farm. The man is from Kandiga, but allied to the Doba Chief, so he was killed by people, believed to have come from Kandiga, which triggered the clash again. It subsequently turned into a conflict between some members of the Kandiga community, those who they think aligned themselves to the Doba Chief, were targeted”. It would be recalled that in June this year, six people were reported killed and 12 houses torched after some residents from the Doba and Kantiga clashed over land intended for a police station project. The police arrested 10persons in connection with the June violence, some guns and cartridges retrieved from suspects and they were put before court.
