NPP chases Assin North MP-elect’s ‘dual citizenship’ records from GIS
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has, through its lawyers, written to the Ghana Immigration Service for details concerning Assin North MP-elect James Quayson’s alleged dual citizenship records. In a letter to the GIS, the NPP’s lawyers, Marfo & Associates, said: “We act as solicitors for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and write pursuant to their instructions. We are informed that James Quayson is a Canadian citizen and holds a Ghanaian passport”. “We shall be grateful if we are furnished with the following documents at your earliest convenience: the travel history of James Quayson, renunciation certificate in respect of the Canadian citizenship prior to the filing to contest the Assin North parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)”, the letter said. Ghana’s laws do not allow dual citizens to be MPs. In one such case, Mr Adamu Dramani Sakande, who became the MP for Bawku Central, was sentenced to two years in jail for that offence by a high court in 2012. Meanwhile, the Central Regional arm of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said Mr Quayson does not hold dual citizenship. Speaking to Kofi Oppong Asamoah on 12Live on Class91.3FM on Wednesday, 23 December 2020, the NDC’s Central Regional Communication Officer, Kwesi Dawood, said: “The NDC member of parliament-elect for the Assin North Constituency, Mr James Joe Quayson, does not hold any dual citizenship, as we speak. So, the NPP can go ahead with their fishing expedition, which will amount to nothing”. “But then, we, as a party in the region, are also serving a word of caution to them that as they seek to peddle false information against an honourable member aimed at damaging his reputation, they should be aware that they can be sued for doing that. Honourable Joe Quayson does not hold dual citizenship. I repeat: he does not hold dual citizenship.” Mr Dawood continued that the NPP are “desperately trying to get some seats to form a majority in parliament which they don’t have.” He further indicated that the NPP began the process to have the MP-elect disqualified from the contest before the 7 December polls. “The fact remains that the Honourable James Joe Quayson, the duly-elected Member of Parliament for the Assin North Constituency, will be sworn in on 7 January come 2021 by law established. He does not hold dual citizenship”. “The funny thing is that they did this thing prior; before the filing of the parliamentary processes, NPP sent a petition to the Electoral Commission; the Electoral Commission did their investigations, but they realised the man does not hold dual citizenship and, so, what is their beef now,” Mr Dawood said. Asante Kotoko lose 1-0 to Al Hilal at home in the 20/21 CAF Champions League
An unimpressive performance from Asante Kotoko has seen the team suffering a 1-0 defeat to Al Hilal Omdurman in the second round first leg encounter of the CAF Champions League. The visitors had a bright start to the first half as they dominated play in the first few minutes. With the host failing to settle, the Sudanese club continued to grow in confidence and came close to scoring in the first ten minutes. CID invites Inusah Fuseini for asking JM to declare himself president and form parallel government
The Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service has invited the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, for questioning over comments he made on a media platform, suggesting that the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama “declares himself president and form a parallel government”. The CID formally wrote to the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye requesting the legislator’s presence on Thursday, 24 December 2020 to assist with investigations. A letter signed by Director-General, CID COP I. K Yeboah read: “The CID is investigating a case in which the MP for Tamale Central Hon Alhaji Inusah Fuseini on Pan-African TV show, made some comments that: ‘I have said and I’ve advocated that the National Democratic Congress flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama and former president of the republic of Ghana, declare himself president and form a parallel government’. “It would be appreciated if you could release the aforementioned MP to report to the Director of Operations CID at the CID Headquarters, Second floor, Room 2 on Thursday, 24 December 2020 at 1000 hours to assist with investigations”. Parliament has hence sent the invitation from the CID to Mr Fuseini in writing. Considering the fact that the House has adjourned, the Speaker entreated him to honour the invitation. A letter signed by the Deputy Director in charge of legal services of Parliament, Nana Tawiah Okyir, on behalf of the Clerk of Parliament stated: “I am directed by the Rt Hon Speaker to bring to your attention the attached letter of invitation from the Ghana Police Service requesting you to assist with ongoing investigations. “Mr Speaker, having regard to the limitations of Articles 117 and 118 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic, and noting the fact that the House is currently adjourned sine die has asked that you make yourself available for the interaction with the Ghana Police on Thursday, 24 December 2020 at 10am at the CID Headquarters, Second floor, Room 2”. Meanwhile, the state, represented by the Ghana Police Service, has dragged Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and ten other opposition MPs to court for embarking on a march to the office of the Electoral Commission in contravention of the Public Order Act. They have also been charged with unlawful assembly. The other ten MPs are Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Samuel George, John Abdulai Jinapor, Rockson Nelson Etse Kwami Defiamekpor, Ras Mubarak, Mutawakilu Adam, Ebenezer Okletey Yerlabi, Dr Kwabena Donkor, Bashir Alhassan Fuseini and Kwabena Mintah Akando. There was a near-violent standoff between the Minority Caucus in Parliament and about 100 heavily armed riot police officers on Tuesday, 22 December 202, as the marching lawmakers tried forcing their way into the headquarters of the Electoral Commission, which is about a kilometre from the Office of Parliament, to present a petition to the election management body concerning the election results declared for the Techiman South constituency after the recently-held general elections. The MPs, led by Mr Iddrisu, were mostly clad in black and kept daring the armed police officers to “shoot us” and “kill us”. Nana Aba Anamoah blasts DKB for making a joke about her forehead
Multiple award-winning journalist and acting manager of GhOne TV, Nana Aba Anamoah has blasted comedian, DKB over a joke he decided to make about her forehead. NDC protesters pounce on ‘national security operative’ at Bolgatanga
Supporters of National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, Wednesday, December 23, pounced a young man they claimed paraded as a national security operative during the December 7 election but showed up clad in red to join their demonstration. The Upper East Regional NDC had its turn to demonstrate Wednesday morning as part of the party’s planned series of demonstrations held across the country to protest the 2020 parliamentary and presidential elections results. The party contends that the election results as announced by the Electoral Commission of Ghana are ‘flawed’ and that they are unable to accept same. While at it this morning, the Regional Secretary, Donatus Akamukri, said they are out on a peaceful protest and warned persons who intend to cause chaos and mayhem. His comments came moments after party supporters chased out and beat a gentleman who paraded as a national security operative during the elections who wanted to join them in the demonstration. It took the intervention of the Ghana Police Service to save the situation. MTN injects Ghanaian touch into Xmas Carols
It was the plan of MTN, organisers of the MTN Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols held at the Fantasy Dome at the weekend to among other things, present a Carols Night with an authentic Ghanaian flavour, and they were spot on, many patrons have said. From the songs performed by the various artistes to the drama piece presented by the ever-improving Roverman Productions, the show reflected everything Ghanaian. The group’s hilarious portrayal of the birth of Jesus Christ in a typical Ghanaian setting impressed members of the audience, both at the event venue and online, as the actors and actresses sang, danced and used current Ghanaian terms that easily excited the audience. For many patrons of the show, Ebo Whyte’s Roverman Productions was simply good. In the music segment of the show, popular singer, Kuami Eugene and all the other musicians on the bill presented some of the most popular western Christmas carols in different local languages and also sang some original Ghanaian songs in various languages. Kurl Songx The other artistes on the line-up, Drew, Kurl Songx, Achiaa, Adepa, Gabi Nova, and Lasmid also sprayed some energy into the atmosphere as they took turns to rock the stage. MTN’s ‘home’ choir, the Viva Voices gave the Carols Service the choral feel with some well-rehearsed songs that got the audience tapping their feet and waving along. Comedian and MC for the show, Foster Romanus did not disappoint – he sang, danced and generally entertained the audience as he laced his presentations with witty jokes that tickled the people. For those watching from outside the venue, the MC dished out free airtime in what was described as the “fastest fingers” segment of the show, which was MTN’s end-of-year goodies to its customers and patrons of the show. Quite understandably, members of the audience at the venue were relatively few due to COVID-19 restrictions, for which reason one could not feel the charged atmosphere that usually characterises such powerful shows. Nonetheless, the various comments by the patrons online indicated that the event was an exhilarating one for the patrons. MTN’s Ayoba Messaging Platform Wins Africa Digital Award for Best Mobile Application
Ayoba, MTN’s instant messaging platform and super app has won the 2020 Africa Digital Award for Best Mobile Application in Africa. The award was presented during the event ceremony hosted by Africa Digital Festival to honour Africa’s Digital Champions during the year. According to the company, the award reflects its achievements during the course of the year. Despite the pandemic, the app reportedly witnessed a sharp rise in user especially in the fourth quarter. It explained that the increase was driven by a positive response by users to the many significant updates to the app. Connecting Africa through content Launched in August by MTN, Ayoba is a platform for customers to primarily send and receive messages. The platform has grown into a super app that offers free access to an ecosystem of digital and rich media services which includes channels, micro-apps and payment solutions to its millions of active monthly users. In November 2019, Ayoba hit a milestone of 1 million active users in just 4 Months To make communication easier the app now supports over 22 local languages like Pidgin, Yoruba, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Swahili, Hausa, French and English spoken across the MTN markets.
