Election petition: Nothing stops Akufo-Addo from being sworn-in – Samson Lardy Anyenini
Legal Practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini says the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) petition to the Supreme Court will not prevent president-elect, Akufo-Addo from being sworn-in as President on January 7. On December 30, 2020, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC), John Mahama, formally filed a petition at the Supreme Court to challenge the results of the 2020 general elections on the grounds that the declaration of the results “is unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect whatsoever”. As part of the reliefs being sought from the court Mr Mahama is requesting “an order annulling of the declaration of President-Elect instrument, 2020 (C.I 135)” and another “order of injunction restraining the 2nd Respondent (Nana Akufo-Addo) from holding himself out as President-elect”. However, in view of the Constitutionally bound Presidential swearing-in ceremony on January 7, Mr Anyenini stated that president-elect Akufo-Addo will still be sworn-in as president in spite of the petition. “As we know from the 2013 petition, a President has to be sworn-in. They have to do their work. If [the NDC] is able to make their case and they win, then they (the Supreme Court) will make the necessary orders to overturn the circumstance”. However, he added that unless the NDC “files an application to seek to injunct the president from being sworn-in, which is an impossibility, advisedly, [as it] is etched in the Constitution, it is almost impracticable to do anything about it”. Explaining the legal process for the petition, which is expected to span a 42-day period from its first hearing, the Legal practitioner indicated that “according to the schedule of the [court] rules, the matter should terminate early in March 2020”. He, however, added that if the request for the annulment of the declaration instrument (C.I. 135 dated December 9th) by the EC is granted “then there is no President-elect”. University Graduate Teachers Threaten to Demonstrate Over GES Insincerity
According to some aggrieved graduate teachers, on the 2nd November 2020, the GES posted a letter on their social media handle (Facebook) indicating the recruitment of University Graduate Teachers. Before the release of the letter, the Education Minister and other major staff like the Education Director granted interviews from the media indicating when the postings of the University Graduate Teachers will be released. They made it clear that the postings of the University Graduate Teachers will be released before the 31st of December, 2020. But as at today, it hasn’t happen. The GES has turned blind eyes to what they said they were going to do and they can’t even tell anyone why. Not even a statement to explain the delay of the postings. Nothing. This has kept a lot of University Graduate Teachers in suspense and they are planning to protest against what they believe to be a plot of deceit. They believe the whole recruitment process was a plot employed by the Ministry of Education for them to be voted for. Communicating with many University Graduate Teachers, they believe that the only language our leaders understand is “demonstration and protest” and they are ready to haunt the ministry with it as they are not ready to do the right thing. Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko 2021 Welcome Letter to Mahama
Dear John Mahama, Akufo-Addo and the NPP did not file an election petition in 2012 to “remove all doubt…” Indeed, today, there are still several Ghanaians who still have doubts over the credibility of the 2012 presidential election and yet accepted the decision of the Supreme Court in that election petition. Their doubts were not removed by the court! Indeed, in such cases, you go to court to rather sow doubts and hope to reap from that. The NPP went to court then because they believed they had enough evidence, which they exhibited, to show that you, John Mahama, did not win in 2012 and that Akufo-Addo won. The final outcome was not so. They disagreed with it but accepted it. No leader worth his salt and no party worth its existence should get up to put their supporters on the streets to burn tyres and cause all manner of havoc, claiming you have won and you, the defeated candidate, saying the results were “fictitious”, only to turn up in court to say your mission is to remove all doubts. Incredible! It is reckless, irresponsible, unpatriotic and, in fact, selfish, for any statesman (a former president for that matter) to waste the time of an entire nation and its supreme court for the mere sake of hoping to “remove all doubt”. What doubt? Whose doubt? You have no doubt that you lost this election. You know it! If you are doubting you lost, please, deal with it at home! Pour yourself a drink and drown your sorrows away, for all we care! But do not waste our time and heighten the hopes of your loyal supporters hopelessly, merely because in your mind you have doubts. Brexit: Boris Johnson’s father applies for French citizenship
The father of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he is applying for French citizenship now that Britain has severed ties with the European Union. Stanley Johnson told France’s RTL radio he had always seen himself as French as his mother was born in France. The 80-year-old former Conservative Member of the European Parliament voted Remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum. His son Boris spearheaded the Leave campaign and later took the UK out of the EU as prime minister. Stanley Johnson explained his reasons for seeking French citizenship in an interview broadcast on Thursday, hours before the UK was due to leave EU trading rules. “It’s not about becoming French,” he told RTL. “It’s about reclaiming what I already have.” He pointed out that his mother was born in France to a French mother. “I will always be European,” he added. Stanley Johnson won a seat in the European Parliament when direct elections were first held in 1979, and later worked for the European Commission. As a result, Boris spent part of his childhood in Brussels. Brexit issues have divided the Johnson family. 2020 Election Petition: We’re not asking the Supreme Court to overturn results – NDC
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently in the Supreme Court challenging the 2020 presidential election results to ensure the Electoral Commission (EC) complies with the electoral laws, contrary to information that it is seeking to have the results overturned in its favour. “If the EC will be willing to comply with the law that will end the matter. But you do not comply with the law and announce another candidate as the victor. Prophecies that came to pass in 2020
Prophecy is a big thing in Ghana; each year lots of prophets predict things that could occur in the future but not many are relished. 2020 being an election year many prophets predicted which candidate God has revealed would become the next president. However, among many things that the prophets claimed were revealed to them by God, not many of the prophets were able to foresee the Novel Coronavirus pandemic taking over Ghana and the world. However, a Prophet by name Jimmy Alla Mensah of House of Divine Glory foretold the awaiting doom that was about to befall the Rawlings Family and asked Ghanaians to pray for the family. Despite not giving the exact date, the prophet posted on his Facebook account on January 16, 2020, that, “Ghana, pray for Rawlings. For I see sadness in their home. May God have mercy in Jesus mighty name.” Another Prophet, Desmond Vidzro also disclosed on social media the unfortunate event. “God revealed it to me on the 16th of July, 2020. I told your daughter (Zenator Rawlings). Don’t joke with prophecies… My heart bleeds. Black coffin it was… Politics is annoying, This death is beyond. The revelation was clear.” Defeat of US President Donald Trump The founder and leader of the Glorious Word and Power Ministry, Rev. Dr Isaac Owusu Bempah predicted the defeat of former US President, Donald Trump. The man of God in August declared that Trump will retain his seat but later made a U-turn that God had forsaken the Republican presidential candidate. He said, “Things have changed spiritually. There is a place in the spiritual world called Paradise where Abraham is president. Abraham and his people in that Paradise decide for the world”. “Something has happened in the US elections and Abraham and his people have held a meeting. The defeat has come but confirmation will come from the almighty God”, he narrated. Akufo-Addo’s victory Despite two prophets declaring victory for the opposing National Democratic Congress, Rev. Dr Isaac Owusu Bempah stood firmly by his words that Akufo-Addo will be elected as the next president of Ghana. While Prophet Badu Kobi and Nigel Gaisie continuously assured the public of John Mahama’s imminent return, Owusu Bempah did not wither in his proclamations. “With all humility, I want to tell Ghanaians to know that per what I saw, Nana Addo will win the elections. When it’s getting to election time normally the seat becomes empty because the citizens are about to decide but the Ghanaian seat is not empty, the president is still sitting on it. “I’m surprised some prophets are saying that John Mahama will win the elections. Nana Akufo-Addo is still on the seat, he has not left it. In 2016, I saw the seat being empty. John Mahama was not on the seat. ‘Pray for Sammy Gyamfi, his killers are after him’ – Badu Kobi
General Overseer of the Glorious Wave Church International, Rev. Emmanuel Badu Kobi has established that people are scheming to assassinate NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammi Gyamfi. In his series of 2021 New Year prophecies, he maintained that the only remedy to avert such a plot against the NDC National Communications Officer is prayer. Addressing his congregants during the 31st watch night service he said: “NDC should pray for Sammy Gyamfi. Excitement as Africa counts down hours to start of trading under AfCFTA
The trading phase under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), signed by 54 of the 55 countries in Africa, is set to begin from January 1, 2021. The deal unites an estimated $3 trillion market, and could help to realise more than $84 billion in untapped intra-African exports, according to a new report by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). African leaders at a virtual summit in early Dece,mber held that trading start on 1 January 2021 as scheduled on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement and requested institutions to provide technical and financial support for its implementation. Sao Tome’s minister for foreign affairs says the deal presents new but solvable challenges. “It naturally presents as any new agreement some challenges, in our opinion of air link, of movement of people in the region itself, but I believe that they are challenges, that we as we move forward in the process will be able to resolve, there is of course also the issue of customs tariffs, although we are talking about free movement. But on the list and on the products that we are going to consider as priority products for the country, so there is a whole organisation that has to be done”, Jua said. Countries now have to harmonise custom and tariff regimes. There are currently eight regional economic blocs in Africa. According to the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the Eastern Africa region is anticipated to generateUS$ 1.8 billion in welfare gains and benefit from over 2 million jobs from the successful implementation of AfCFTA. Trading was originally planned to start on July 1, 2020 but the pandemic struck leading to the suspension of negotiations. For Intra-African trade, 90 per cent of all goods will become tariff free from January 1 for all the countries that have deposited their instruments of AfCFTA ratification with the chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). A total of 36 countries have already completed this procedure. With all the African countries, except Eritrea, participating, the AfCFTA would have the largest number of member countries in any trade deal since the formation of the World Trade Organization. By giving a boost to intra-regional trade in manufacturing, AfCFTA is expected to increase employment opportunities, and help women get into the workforce. It can result in gradual altering of global supply chains, especially for products that require relatively lesser skills. 10 government officials not wanted in Akufo-Addo 2nd term – NPP group makes list
A pressure group affiliated with the governing New Patriotic Party, Patriotic Reform Movement says it has sampled the views of 2,500 party supporters nationwide and have come up with a list of officials who need to be kicked out of government in order to keep the prospect of maintaining power in 2024 alive. According to the group pushing for major reforms in the NPP, one of the major reasons for the near defeat of the party in the parliamentary elections of the 2020 general elections was as a result of the poor conduct and bad attitude of some government appointees. The groups say it gathered through its survey the individuals who will cause the party to lose the 2024 elections very badly if they are allowed to serve in any capacity in the next government to be formed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his second term. “Such individuals will cause widespread apathy and will cause members to stay away and in severe cases leave the party. 2500 party members were interviewed across the 16 regions of Ghana and ten particular names were often mentioned,” the group in a statement said.
