As Ghanaians held religious events to commemorate the New Year (2021), Savannah Regional Secretariat of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Friday, January 1, organized special Islamic prayer in Damongo. Renowned Islamic Clerics in the region and beyond participated in the event spearheaded by the Regional Chairman, Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana alias Professor Kalamonia. They prayed for peace, unity and development of the nation and thanked Allah for his abundant grace. In furtherance to the Quranic recitation, a bull and a white ram were offered up to the Almighty Allah for the peaceful conduct of the 2020 general elections. 2021: Confusion to hit NPP over Bawumia, Alan tight race
Prophet Salifu Amoako has predicted that there will be confusion within the New Patriotic Party in the coming months as Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia locks horns with Trade Minister Alan Kyeremateng over who replaces President Akufo-Addo as flagbearer of the ruling NPP. New Speaker of Parliament will be anti-Akufo-Addo – Sulemana Braimah predicts
The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah has predicted that the next Speaker of Parliament will be anti-Akufo-Addo. NDC’s election petition can be heard in two weeks, 42-day period too long – Ayine
A former Deputy Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine has said that the 2020 election petition filed by the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama at the Supreme Court can be heard within two weeks just as what happened in Kenya. He said on the Key Points Programme on TV3 Saturday January 2 that the 42-day period set out by the new rules for the Justices of the Supreme Court to handle the case, in his view, is too long. A new directive has been given to the justices of the apex court in Ghana to hear any election dispute within 42 days from the day it was filed. In the last election petition hearing after the 2012 polls, it took the highest court of the land some nine months to arbitrate the petition. The NDC and their Presidential Candidate filed the petition on Wednesday December 30, 2020 which seeks, among other things, a rerun of the presidential elections, asking the Court for an order to restrain Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Second Respondent, from holding himself out as President-elect. Dr Ayine, who is also Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East told host of the Key Points Abena Tabi that “The lessons that we learned from the 2012 petition was that we went through a trial of eight months, we held the country spellbound to television sets on a daily basis for eight months and so we leant a very difficult lesson from that. That is how come his Lordship Justice Yoni Kulendi was making reference to the new rule that has stipulated a shorter time period of 42 days for the petition to be heard.” “Whether the respondents have been served with the petition I haven’t been able to check that but I think it is very important because time is beginning to run. They have to be served and personally to. In the case of the Electoral Commission, because it is an independent commission any principal officer of the Commission can be served with the petition and can receive it.” “In the case of his Excellency the President as the Second Respondent, he must be personally served. You can’t just go and leave it at the Flag Staff House or his residence at Nima and then expect that he will be duly served. So, we have some work to do. I hope that the panel in this case will find, during the case management, a more expeditious way of getting us into a shorter period. In fact I don’t want us to even go the 42 days, it is too long. The Kenyans did it in two weeks.” Meanwhile the justices of the Supreme Court have allayed fears that they are going to rush the hearing in view of the shorter time period. Asked whether the justices are not snowballing the wheel of justice with this directive, while speaking in an interview with TV3’s Thomas Adotei Pappoe, Justice Yonny Kulendi said on 29th November 2020 that; “That is not the case. With our experiences in the last election petition, parliament by law, has set timelines for the resolution for future presidential election disputes and so that timeline of 42 days within which any presidential election disputes ought to be resolved was not set by the judiciary . “It is set by law. It is an amendment to the existing legislation that makes that provision and indeed, the law attaches a schedule and the schedule sets out timelines within which the various processes that will culminate in a hearing.” He added “The timelines provided in the legislative instrument are consistent with the timelines by law including the constitution. “The purpose of this review is to update it and reflect all the amendment to the law and the new laws that have been passed.” He further explained that the Chief Justice places high premium on elections in Ghana because they form an important aspect of Ghana’s democracy. “It is process by which we exercise our franchise and invest in a selected group of people or invest in one man all executive powers of the republic. “It has always been the case. If the judges want to give us 42 days then they may have to give up part of their time. “Moving forward the next time we are going to have an election, there should be a column where we will say that the candidates should provide their email address for service in the event of an election petition so that electronically you can be served. I can’t imagine trying to get security clearance to go and serve him. Errors in Mahama’s election petition unpardonable – Legal Practitioner
Private Legal Practitioner in Ghana and Member of the British Bar, Ralph Poku-Adusei, says the errors associated with the election petition filed by lawyers of the defected flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, are unpardonable and same has dragged the legal profession into public ridicule. “The mistakes, omissions and clerical errors in the petition as filed by lawyers for the NDC flagbearer in the just ended 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections are unacceptable. In fact, the nature of the mistakes in the petition reduces the confidence the public has in the Ghanaian bar as far as the standards and etiquettes of the legal profession is concerned and thus it will be prudent for the legal team to ensure that the mistakes are corrected at the earliest opportune time” lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei said in an exclusive interview with Asaase News. The duty of a lawyer to represent someone, be it an applicant such as in the instant case, or a respondent in Court is a sacred duty and lawyers are naturally enjoined to ensure that they have done due deligence before proceeding to act in a matter. Former President John Mahama filed a petition at the registry of the Supreme Court on the last day of the twenty-one (21) day window allowed by law for a presidential candidate to file a petition against the results of a general election in the country (30th December 2020). In the petition, lawyers of Mr. Mahama, interchanged who the 1st Respondent (EC) is and who the 2nd respondent (Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo) throughout the petition. Additionally, in the last (6th) relief been sought by the petitioner, instead of requesting an order of the Court to order a re-run between the petitioner and the winner of the 2020 Presidential election, the prayer was rather for a re-run between the petitioner and the Electoral Commission of Ghana. In conclusion the lawyer stated that given the all important nature of the instant Petition lawyers should be minded to ensure that such mistakes and embarrassment are avoided . Anas condemns threats on journalists; demands state protection for Manasseh, others
Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas of Tiger Eye P.I. is asking state authorities and other agencies to ensure that media personnel who continue to receive death threats are given immediate protection. He is also demanding justice for his colleague journalist who was gruesomely murdered in the line of duty. Anas’ call comes in the wake of recent complaints of threats and attacks on some journalists in the country. He particularly mentioned, Manasseh Azure Awuni, Edward Adeti, Afia Pokuaah, Captain Smart, Abdul Hayi Moomen, David Tamakloe among others as some persons whose lives must be protected by security agencies. In a statement, the Tiger Eye P.I boss condemned the attacks describing them as “barbaric and backward” adding that, “it is a terrible thing to practice journalism under conditions such as these, and it is even dangerous when nothing is done, and the perpetrators get to carry out their threats.” He has thus charged government, security forces, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the National Media Commission (NMC) to decisively probe into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators regaled of their social class are arrested made to face the full rigours of the law. “Tiger Eye P.I calls on the government to condemn these threats and careless utterances be it from a lawmaker, a government official or opposition groups in the strongest terms yet. The security agencies must proactively investigate the sources of death threats and arrest the criminals. Nana Addo hopes to deal decisively with COVID-19 in 2021
President Akufo-Addo is hopeful Ghana will be able to deal decisively with the coronavirus pandemic in the year 2021. The President says dealing with the virus will be government’s topmost priority this year. Speaking in a brief interview with journalists after worshipping with the Ridge Church in Accra on 31st night, President Akufo-Addo admonished Ghanaians to maintain the peace of the country. “I hope we have a good year and then COVID-19 is finally brought under control in the country, so we are able to build our economy and secure the peace and stability of the country.
