6000 Security officers to be deployed for Akufo-Addo’s inauguration
The Police Service has announced 6000 security officials will be deployed for the inauguration of President-elect Akufo-Addo on Thursday. The security personnel will include officers of the Ghana Armed Forces, a statement by the Police service said. ‘Desperate’ NPP trying to eliminate some of our MPs – Asiedu Nketia
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress has accused the New Patriotic Party of plotting to ‘eliminate’ some Members of Parliament who won the elections on the ticket of the NDC. Asiedu Nketia says the party has noticed that the ruling party is scheming to murder some of the NDC MPs so as to allow them have control of parliament. Speaking on Joy News, Asiedu Nketia referenced the attacks on some MPs-elect of the party as grounds for his assertions. He revealed that the party’s candidate in the Techiman South constituency has been attacked twice in the last two weeks. “Our candidate in Techiman has been attacked twice. His houseboy has been shot and he was attacked two days ago. They want to take his life. They think that is the way to get out of this mess. Once he is killed then everything comes to a close. “The modus operandi of the NPP now is that if the NDC has won seats that they cannot contest then let us find a way of eliminating some of the people who have won so that the remaining number will be less than what we have won, so that on that they can determine who becomes the Speaker of Parliament”. “More than four of our candidates have come under attack in these past two weeks. Our candidate-elects for Keta, Jomoro, Savelegu and Christopher Bayere have been all attacked. Bayere has been attacked twice”. Why NDC opted for a re-run – Alex Segbefia bares it all
A Spokesperson for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the election petition case, Alex Segbefia has said that the NDC decided to opt for a rerun of the elections because of the limited time at their disposal to prove their case. It has emerged that the National Democratic Congress after the 2020 elections said through its Deputy General Secretary Peter Boamah Otukonor that it has won the 2020 Presidential elections by 6,166, 385. “From the spreadsheet, you will see that provisionally, we have won this election by some 6, 166, 385 votes and that constitutes 50.15%. However, the NDC’s leader, John Dramani Mahama in his petition to challenge 2020 elections has asked for the Supreme Court to order for a rerun of the election because to him no one won the election. This has raised doubt about their petition and whether it can stand the test of time. But speaking in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the former Health Minister who speaks for the NDC said with the limited time of 42 days in court, it imperative that the NDC puts their best foot forward. He said while defending the NDC’s petition that “There is the issue of we said we won so why are we now saying that we are going for a re-run. Unlike others who had 10 months to run a case, the practice direction and rules now say a case should be done in 42 days. It becomes very important that when you have this type of time limit, you have to put your best foot forward to get to a point which is of use to you”. Arguing further, he said “So, we do not have the benefit which occurred in 2012 of calling pink sheets upon pink sheets. It won’t work. We’ll run out of time and the court will get upset with us. It will take us a full 10 months in court to run a case to demonstrate what many of us believe. It is not as simple and straightforward as that. As one late Chairman of our party said, there are many ways of dealing with a cat so we’ve decided to go down this particular road. It may come to certain aspects of that in this trial but at least because of the way in which we are handling this case we believe that we are trying to keep to the rules and regulations set out by the court and we cannot get the courts upset when we are actually going to run a case of this nature”. Boakye Agyarko named in tight Speaker race as NDC also prepares list for January 7 showdown
The name of former campaign manager of President Akufo-Addo and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has been proposed for strong consideration as Speaker of Parliament ahead of the crunch convening of parliament on January 7th as the NDC also claims majority and prepares shortlist. This is after various names were proposed though it remains unclear which party will make the majority or minority. The opposition NDC has said it is also preparing a shortlist of persons for the role of the speaker on January 7th, which list include among others Alban Bagbin, Asiedu Nketia, Cletus Avoka and Justice W. Atuguba. So far, on the NPP side, Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana proposed Freddie Blay as the next Speaker of Parliament. He said the current National Chairman of the party is best suited for the role in what will be a near-hung parliament. ‘Furious’ Sam George charges at Gabby Otchere-Darko for predicting by-elections in 2021
Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram has taken on Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko over a publication he made on Facebook. Gabby Otchere-Darko catalogued a number of things which he claims to be prophecies that will come to pass in 2021. Point eight of Gabby’s twelve-point prophecy states that “there will be by-elections this year”. Sam George who is lawmaker on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress has a bone to pick with the legal practitioner over this comment of his. Sam George has questioned why a leading member of the ruling party will make such assertions. He listed the conditions precedent for a by-election to be held and wondered if Gabby is predicting that an MP will suffer any of the conditions. “I have just seen your so-called prophecies for 2021. I am shocked that even for someone like you, you stooped even lower than has come to be expected”. “Can you explain for the understanding of Ghanaians the number 8 in your list? You claim there will be by-elections this year. Not one! You used plural. Except for medical incapacitation, criminal conviction, voluntary resignation or death, I wonder how else we can have these by-elections”.
