Former Ghana international, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, has disclosed why he decided to take the last penalty kick that won Ghana its first U-20 World Cup in 2009. Taking the last kick in a penalty shootout is a daunting task for many players, but not the case for Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu. According to Agyemang-Badu, his mother had a revelation in a dream that he would become famous for a goal he would score at the tournament. “My mum said I had scored a goal and my name was everywhere and so our game against Uzbekistan, I hit a ball from the center and it hit the crossbar, so after the game, I phoned my mother and informed her that Osofo Maame it [the goal] didn’t happen,” Agyemang-Badu said on the Nabil Show. Although he missed that opportunity to score, the former Udinese stated that his mother comforted him to “wait and pray” because “it will come.” The Black Satellites made it to the finals of the tournament where they defeated Brazil in the penalty shootout by 4-3 with Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu scoring Ghana’s winning goal. Ensure Transparency, Transformative Education, Inclusion and Transformative Action – Youth Activist four (4) Demands to Global Government. Written By Prosper Adankai Eighteen (18) Youth Activist across the globe has called on the World leaders and decision makers to ensure transparency, transformative education, inclusion and transformative actions to climate crisis. An Open Letter from the Youth dubbed “One World, One Health” noted that the current patterns of production, consumption, landscape degradation and pollution have led to the many challenges that all generations are collectively facing: particularly the biodiversity, climate and health crises. They have therefore urge world leaders, decision-makers, civil society organizations, and individuals to recognize the importance of sustaining a healthy planet and address the inevitable products of our capitalist and colonial system. To commemorate this open letter, GLF elected 2 Youth focused group leaders to deliberate on the Biodiversity recommendation report in an Instagram live. They include the Project Coordinator for Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), Betty Osei Bonsu in Ghana and Ruth Oveiedo Halland, a Researcher with Empoderachima in the Texas, United States. DEMAND FOR TRANSFORMATIVE ACTION The Project Coordinator for Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), Betty Osei Bonsu reiterated the call on all communities, decision makers and the whole of society to recognize that the immediate, severe and disproportionate impacts of the biodiversity and climate crises require concerted and immediate transformative action. She stressed that the relationship between humans and the environment has never been more important hence it was time to recognize the collective contribution to the socio-ecological crisis. “Women, youth, children, and Indigenous Peoples, are among the many groups often marginalized in this crisis, leading them to become the most vulnerable and the most victimized. These communities need representation in governance to ensure that their needs are met today and in the future. She made mention of the new initiative GAYO is about to embark on called “Youth for Climate Council”. This will provide a space for bottom up approach in decision-making and promote transparency. She further stated that decision-makers and leaders must work together to immediately act upon the drivers that degrade the Earth’s health and subsequently, human wellbeing. The time where youth hold signage’s to raise protest and raise complaints is over, it’s time for action! She added. DEMAND FOR INCLUSION Betty Osei Bonsu mentioned that the mobilization of youth networks and organizations could be the catalyst for collective and robust action across all sectors and levels. “Through advocacy, grassroots movements, and networking, we strongly believe that fostering inclusivity, diversity, and intergenerational equity, ensuring environmental justice and mainstreaming gender-responsiveness are crucial to overcoming the challenges we are facing. We, the youth, are committed to working diligently for our common present and future. We invite all generations, all world leaders, decision-makers, and the whole of society to join us in sustaining a safe, radically inclusive and healthy planet for all.” Madam Osei Bonsu pointed out. DEMAND TRANSPARENCY For her part, Ruth Oveiedo Halland , a Researcher with Empoderachima in Texas, United States stressed the call on all governments to legislate for greater transparency within the operating systems of industries and sectors directly and indirectly connected with climate change, biodiversity and health. She observed a lack of transparency and free access to accurate and adequate data is hiding highly unsustainable supply chains, creating uncertainty around environmental impact assessments, fostering green washing tactics, and impeding civil society’s ability to expose misinformation. “Governments need to consider nature as an additional stakeholder and integrate the environment into all decisions. We wish to see biodiversity agreements, policies and legislative tools that will ensure that those actors who are responsible for harming our environment are held accountable, in order to safeguard human rights, including indigenous rights, in their implementation, and to guarantee the protection of environmental defenders” Ruth Halland added. DEMAND FOR TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION The Researcher Ruth further reminded the call on all actors to recognize the complexity and interconnectivity of the ongoing crises and their countless implications, and to prioritize transformative education. “We need transformative education to facilitate our reconnection with nature and to ensure that we value nature through personal and collective experiences. Transformative education should be informed by different ways of knowing, and it should focus on biological diversity, cultural diversity and heritage, and overall sustainability. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities can inform and shape transformative education, as they hold knowledge for studying and understanding the drivers of these crises, as well as for exploring the ways forward. Transformative education should be integrated into all educational systems and be promoted in informal education settings.” She stressed them forcibly. MTN Ghana Foundation empowers youth in mobile phone repairs
MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned the Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Project (YEEP) at Nsawam which saw 50 beneficiaries graduate with certificates in mobile phone repairs. The project which was a partnership between the MTN Ghana Foundation and Plan International aimed at empowering young people with employable skills needed to help reduce youth employment rates in the Nsawam area. Experts in mobile phone repairs were engaged to train the youth in introduction to mobile phone technology, basic customer service, front end repairs, repair and rectification of faults of mobile phones. They were also trained on how to maintain a safe and secure work environment. At the end of the training programme, the beneficiaries comprising 36 young men and 14 women were each provided with equipment and kiosks to start their own mobile phone repair ventures within Nsawam and its environs. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, a board member of the MTN Ghana Foundation Mrs. Nabilla Williams said “Despite the good intentions of government and the private sector, youth unemployment is a major source of concern. This is why, this project is really important and timely. The training and equipping of these youth to engage in mobile phone repairs is certainly a fantastic project which we all have to embrace. Enrolment doubles at Nhyiaeso D/A Basic School as new MTN Ghana Foundation-sponsored classrooms opens
Enrolment at the Nhyiaeso D/A Basic School has more than doubled following the completion and handing over of a new classroom block. Following a JoyNews Agenda report, MTN Ghana Foundation handed over a fully furnished six-unit classroom block and a teachers’ bungalow to the school. The Nhyiaeso D/A Basic School has become the choice of students in adjoining communities even in the Sekyere Afram Plains district. That modern edifice does not only make teaching conducive but provides the right learning environment. “It is really captivating to see students in an environment like this. They don’t even want to go home and they are really enjoying what MTN has given to us,” Municipal Director of Education for Asante Akim, Mildred Ama Kwakye Agyapong said. Teacher supervise students of Nhyiaeso D/A Basic School The student population has increased from 256 in 2019 to the current 673. Primary school accounts for 458, with the rest at kindergarten and JHS. Nasidu Amidu is one of 45 junior high students who have so far changed their schools from Dagomba in the Sekyere Afram Plains District to Nhyiaeso. “My classroom at Dagomba used to leak badly. Fortunately for me, there is a new classroom for me here. I am elated to be in this new classroom. I am always happy to come to school because of the new classroom,” said Amidu. Amidu with four of his friends who until now trekked several kilometres to attend school at Dagomba in Sekyere Afram Plains District. “I didn’t come to Nhyiaeso D/A Basic School alone. I came with some of my friends. The new classrooms are very conducive to learning. The feeling is different here,” he said. Education authorities are happy with the intervention of the MTN Ghana Foundation. The District Director of Education said, “Just yesterday when we did the ‘My First Day at School’, we had about 45 new entrants. Apart from those coming from Nhyiaeso village, others came from the environs so you can imagine. NAVRONGO: People of Pungu community cry for help over abandoned killer bridges
The People of the Pungu community in Kassena Nankana Municipal of the Upper East Region have raised an alarm of abandonment of some uncompleted bridges in the community. According to reports, few weeks to the 2020 elections, construction of bridges was seen across the community. What prompted the construction, whose initiative, and the purpose for the bridge’s construction carnival is a whole topic on its own according to a Facebook post sighted by Apexnewsgh.com. Pungu Community members and residents of Pungu Bawia Pungu Talania and Pungu Wusungu said these bridges have taken away precious lives through accidents as seen disabled due to the posing danger of uncompleted bridges scattered across the community.
