President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, pursuant to Article 89 (2) of the 1992 Constitution, has appointed the following eleven (11) persons to the Council of State: 1. Gen. J.B. Danquah, a former Chief of Defence Staff of the Armed Forces, and Nana Owusu Nsiah, a former Inspector General of Police, to the Council. The President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II, is ex-officio a member of the Council, in furtherance of Article 89(2)(b). V/R: Investigate attack on Tamale DVLA boss – Ziope Chiefs
The Chiefs and people of the Ziope Traditional Area in the Volta Region have called on government to institute investigations into an alleged attack on the Northern Regional office of the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Tamale. The incident which is said to have happened on Friday 29th January 2021 was allegedly carried out by persons suspected to be members of pro-NPP vigilante group -Kandahar boys who demanded the removal of the Regional Manager, Mr. Frank Gasese. But according to the Traditional authorities, the demand for the removal of Mr. Frank Gasese and subsequent attack on his office and staff is based on tribal and ethnocentric tendencies other than competency. Addressing the media at Ziope this morning, the Awadada of the Ziope Traditional area, Torgbui Vizaze Adzaho V, said the issue is a matter of concern to them since the regional manager, is not only a prominent citizen but a paramount stool father to the Traditional area. “Someone may ask why our Traditional Area is concerned with an attack happening in Tamale. The simple answer to that is that, the Regional Manager, Zikpuitor Frank Gasese who has been attacked and facing threats is not just a prominent citizen of Ziope but also the paramount stool father of our Traditional area and also a key player in the development of the area. It is for these reasons that we are concerned and deem it very necessary to issue thud press statement to bring forth to public light,” Awadada told the media at Ziope. Why accuse me of sacrificing my daughter? – Anyidoho on GH¢10m suit against Mahama’s boy
Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Koku Anyidoho has broken his silence over his GH¢10 million defamatory suit filed against an aide to former President John Dramani Mahama. Mr Anyidoho on Thursday, January 28, 2021 filed a defamatory suit at the Tema High Court against Dzifa Gunu, for publishing a defamatory article about him on January 16, 2021 in a Facebook post. Speaking on the suit for the first time, Mr Anyidoho in an interview with Okay FM monitored by GhanaWeb said, his decision to pursue the defendant was borne out of persistent attacks on him, one of which he thought was ridiculous and uncalled for. These were accusations to the effect that, he was involved in the death of his 8-year-old daughter. “On November 17, I sadly lost my 8-year-old daughter, I’ve not finished mourning her and in my brief moment of consolation, someone goes to write that I killed my own daughter for money rituals. Can you imagine?” he questioned. According to him, his quest for legal redress is to clear his name in the sight of his remaining children who will be compelled to think their own father killed their sister for money as alleged by Dzifa Gunu. Asked why as a member of the NDC, he did not use internal party structures to address the issue, Mr Anyidoho said the disrespect and deliberate attempt to taint his image by the aide to the former President has become too much for him to bear. “This is not the first time, in December he wrote something about me that I didn’t mind. But consistently he has attacked my personality. I don’t know him from anywhere. I’ve seen him once or twice somewhere but he is not my friend, we don’t hail from the same town, he has not been to my house before and neither have I. But he has decided that he will continuously attack the personality of Koku Anyidoho,” he said. The suit by Koku Anyidoho also states that the plaintiff, in the article he published on social media, alleged that he had made several attempts on the life of former President John Mahama which was untrue. He avers that the defendant, by his careless and reckless claims, has lowered his reputation in the eyes of the public which has resulted in him suffering “great distress, embarrassment and damage to his reputation”. In addition to the damages, Koku Anyidoho has asked the High Court to injunct the defendant from publishing further defamatory materials about him, he is also asking for a retraction and apology of the publication and an order for the defendant to pull down the publication from Facebook as well as other social media platforms and news portals that published it. Lead Counsel for the 2nd Respondent in the 2020 Presidential Election Petition, Lawyer Akoto Ampaw, demanded during cross-examination that witness for the petitioner, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, answered his questions without verbose explanations. In the estimation of the Lawyer Akoto Ampaw, the witness’s explanations to some of the questions amounted to an attempting to lecture the court, rather than answering the questions he was being asked in the witness box. The first witness of the petitioner was confronted in court Monday with video evidence of some NDC press conferences where he seemingly declared the petitioner a winner of the presidential elections. Mr. Nketia admitted that he was indeed the one in the video and that “those are my words” but denied declaring John Mahama winner in the tapes played. According to him, he only expressed his expectations that John Mahama would win the presidential elections on the face of the information available to him at the time. Another police officer allegedly dies by suicide in Accra
Another police officer has reportedly died by suicide at Ridge in Accra after he allegedly shot himself. The officer, identified as Constable Yelnona Eugene of the National Protection Unit (NPU) was on duty when the incident allegedly occurred. He was part of a team providing security at the residence of a Togolese opposition leader, Gilcrest Olympio who is resident in Ghana. He is believed to have shot himself in the washroom of the opposition leader on the dawn of Monday, February 1, 2021. Graphic Online earlier reported that the deceased had allegedly been denied a leave extension to seek medical attention by his superiors, indicating that he had not been well for some time. According to the source who spoke to Graphic Online, Constable Yelnona resumed from his leave on Friday, January 29, 2021, and requested for an extension of the leave to enable him to continue with his medication and treatment at home but was allegedly denied. News of the incident comes barely 48 hours after the Half Assini District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police, Mr Cyprian Zenge reportedly shot himself in his house with his sidearm. A note that reads, “I am fed up in this world,” was found close to him. The Western Regional Police Command indicated that the note which appeared to have been written by Mr Zenge was found by members of the Regional Crime Scene Team who visited the scene. Maintaining COVID-19 testing for non-ECOWAS members at $150 unconscionable – Ablakwa
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa the Member of Parliament (MP) for the North-Tongu constituency in the Volta Region, has said government’s decision to continue with the $150 COVID-19 testing fee for non-ECOWAS members is “unconscionable”. According to Mr. Ablakwa post on Facebook, the decision by government is not the attitude needed to fight a pandemic which requires that all global actors look out for each other.
