Akufo-Addo retires NLA boss Osei Ameyaw, sacked deputy
President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw, to go on his compulsory retirement. The President has also terminated the appointment of Mr. Osei Ameyaw’s deputy, Mr. Yaw Amoakohene Baafi. The correspondence from the President to the two men was signed by his Executive Secretary Nana Asante Bediatuo. The President’s letter to Mr. Osei Ameyaw read in part: “Upon reaching the compulsory retirement age of sixty years on 20th February 2020, the President of the Republic, by a letter under my hand dated September 3, 2020, granted you a one-year contract of service as Director-General of the National Lottery Authority. “The one-year contract lapsed on 20th February 2021, and therefore you are retired on that date”. “Accordingly, you are directed to hand over to Mr. Ernest Mortey, the Finance Director of the Authority, who shall act as the Director-General of the Authority pending the appointment of a substantive Director-General. You are further directed to proceed to collect any terminal benefits or facilities due you under the relevant law.” In Mr. Baafi’s case, the letter said: “Due to the re-organisation of the Authority, I am to inform you that the President has terminated your appointment with immediate effect. “You are directed to proceed to collect your terminal benefits in lieu of notice”. About two weeks ago, the National Labour Commission (NLC) declared a strike by staff of the NLA as “wrongful and unfair” and ordered them to call it off. The NLC also directed the management of the NLA to meet with the leadership of the workers’ union to address their concerns. At the hearing at the NLC on Monday, 1 March 2021, the leadership of the workers’ union of the NLA raised concerns about the safety and security of their workers, arising from alleged unpaid winnings. The now-retired D-G, at the time, explained to the NLC that in this day and age where cyber-crime has become a big issue, big wins were thoroughly investigated, verified, and validated before payment of the said wins. “These processes usually take time”, he said but assured the Commission that there is a committee set up to address the issue. Mr. Ameyaw noted that anybody whose win has not been paid should present all their relevant documents to the committee and if it is cleared, the winning shall be paid within 14 days. Breaking News: Sad news hits Dr Anthony Akoto Osei
The wife of former Member of Parliament (MP) for Tafo in the Ashanti Region, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei, has passed on. However, the cause of death is not immediately known. Information Minister and MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, took to his Facebook page to break the news. This was after he visited the family to commiserate with them over their loss. Mr Oppong Nkrumah’s post eulogised the former Monitoring and Evaluation Minister for his contribution towards his life. “I started my day on a sad black note. Dr Anthony Akoto Osei, former MP for Tafo, taught me half of what I know in Finance and Economy. On the loss of his wife, colleagues gathered to mourn with him,” he said. The former Deputy Secretary of the Opposition National Democratic Congress Samuel Koku Anyidoho has refuted claims that he was suspended by the party leadership. On February 9, 2021, the National Democratic Congress issued a statement announcing the suspension of former deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho. In a statement signed by the General Secretary, Johnson Aseidu Nketia, the party said it considered two separate petitions before suspending Anyidoho. This decision according to the party is in accordance with articles 46(1),46(6), and 46(8)(b) of the party’s constitution. “At its meeting on the 20th January 2021, FEC considered two separate petitions from two registered members of the National Democratic Congress (copies attached) each of which lodged an official complaint against your conduct which is viewed to be in breach of the Party’s disciplinary code for its members as contained in the NDC Constitution. The petitioners are: Mr. Mobarak Abdul Karim (Oti Reg. Com. Officer), Eric Adjei (Bono Reg Dep. Com. Off.),” the letter dated February 8, 2021 read. “You are therefore by this letter to take note and notice is hereby given, that your membership of the NDC is suspended pending the hearing and final determination of the petitions against your conduct”. But according to Mr. Anyidoho, in an interview with Nana Aba on Starrfm on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, he maintained that he is still a bonafide member of the NDC. According to him, he has not received any letter of suspension from the party. “I have not received any letter to that effect. I have not received any news. I’m a bonafide member of the NDC just that I’m doing different things now, the delegates made a choice and I have never been angry. Even that day at Trade Fair, I stayed till the very end. Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam construction to start 2021—President Akufo-Addo
“The construction of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project is aimed at mitigating the regular floods that occur in the White-Volta basin covering parts of the Upper East and North East Regions. Preparatory activities started in 2020 and would be completed by the first half of this year with actual construction commencing the second half of this year, Commissioning is expected in 2025. It is the single largest investment in the northern part of Ghana, made by any government,”. The President made this pronouncement during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. The President who was very emphatic during his address assured the country and more especially the people of the Upper East and North East Region that, earthworks on the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam will begin in the second half of 2021 after the completion of preparatory activities in the first half. Meanwhile, President comments trail the submission of Former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu who during his vetting as Minister Designate for Railway Development disclosed that the construction company in charge of constructing the dam, Power China, has written to the Ministry of Energy for initial mobilization to officially commence work, adding that the delay was due to funding challenges. President Akufo-Addo during the sod-cutting event explained that the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam and irrigation project when constructed, remains the single largest investment by any government in Ghana’s North. The three main components of the project are a dam with an elevation of 165 meters and a maximum reservoir of 350 square kilometers, a hydroelectric power generation unit made up of two turbines with 60 megawatts of installed capacity, and 16.5 megawatts of firm continuous capacity as well as an irrigation scheme consisting of 12 metres high weir and canal system spanning about 25, 000 hectares of land. Apart from boosting economic growth through increased solar energy supply, the project is expected to help cut down on the importation of food such as rice and also serve as flood control due to the perennial flooding that often accompanies the spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. UER: Gold miners attacked by armed robbers in Bolgatanga
Armed robbers have attacked and robbed miners in Tanzui a community in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region. According to reports, the robbers numbering 2 reportedly besieged the miners at a mining processing mill near the Assemblies of God Church along the dual-carriage road and robbed them of a huge quantity of gold and some undisclosed amount of cash amount at a gunpoint. According to accounts given by some of the victims, the perpetrators invaded the mills with 2 motorbikes after they had finished with the gold and ordered them to hand over the mineral to them as they fire gunshots, before proceeding to the prospective buyer and robbed him of an undisclosed amount of money meant for purchasing the gold and sped off with their motorbikes. Though, the miners believe the armed robbers might have gotten a hint of their operations on that day through an insider. For over a period now, armed robbery cases in the Upper East Region are increasingly going out of hand as residents in the regional capital and beyond fear for their lives. UER: Dog meat shortage hits Sandema market
Dog meat sellers at Sandema in the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region were disappointed when they visited the major market in the area to buy dogs and prepare for their customers. When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Sandema visited the dog market on which happened to be a market day in the Municipality, it observed that the usually filled market was deserted. There were however other animals such as sheep and goats for sale. Dada Bee, a popular dog meat seller at Sandema who expressed worry about the situation, told the GNA that “I went to the dog market this morning at about 0900hours only to realise there was only one dog in the market for sale. “We were six dog meat sellers in the market at that time, all bargaining to buy the dog. I was able to buy it because I offered to pay GHS 185.000 for what I would have ordinarily bought for GHS 140.000.” Dada Bee explained that it was a market day, and he could not afford to disappoint his customers, who usually trooped to his place to buy their favourite delicacy by midday. He said the situation had compelled him to increase the price of the meat, “I used to sell the thigh of the dog for GHS 25.00, but now, I am selling it for GHS 30.00, the neck which I used to sell for GHS 18.00 or GHS 20.00, now goes for GHS 25.00.” He said some customers who were aware of the shortage were comfortable with the prices, while those who did not know still bargained for the old price. “Though some customers will initially complain about the prices today, when I tell them the situation, they understand and buy at the price I offer,” Dada Bee said. Dada Bee and his colleagues could not give the exact cause of the shortage except to jokingly say “The people have eaten all the dogs”. The dog meat sellers usually move from home to home to buy the animals and also travel to other markets such as the Fumbisi, Yagba and Kubori markets to buy. “For the past week, all the markets could not give us the numbers we usually buy so demand for the meat has gone higher than we can supply”, they said. Mr Abdulai Arimeyaw, a Butcher, told the GNA that “I deal in sheep and goats, but we were all surprised this morning when we came and realised the shortage of dogs in the market.” According to him, there was general shortage of all animals in the market, which led to price increase. “Now unless you have GHS 200.00 or more, you will not get a sizeable goat or sheep, which used to be sold at GHS 150.000 to buy. I came and couldn’t buy any, and so I am returning home.” Owing to the shortage of dogs in the market, most vendors slaughtered pigs for their customers, while others shutdown their joints. The delicacy is usually served with powdered dry pepper and chopped onions depending on the buyer’s choice, and it is the favourite of many residents of Sandema and its environs. One of Dada Bee’s customers who was seated at the joint to buy his favourite part of the dog meat while it was on fire, said “I rushed here from my office to buy the meat and return. I just heard this morning that there was shortage of dogs in town. “But despite the shortage, I knew Dada Bee will not disappoint his customers. The only problem is that the shortage will affect us because the prices of the meat will definitely go up,” he said. Akufo-Addo encouraged me when i was confused about whether to accept or reject the AG position–Domelevo
The immediate past Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has revealed that the then-President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo influenced him to accept the Auditor-General position when President John Dramani Mahama appointed him in 2016 during his time of leaving office as Ghana President. “in 2016 when I was appointed, and I was confused as to whether I should accept or reject it, a call came through from Dr. Matthew Opoku Premeph and after greeting him, he said, ‘hold on for the then President-elect’. So, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo encouraged me, he said, ‘Go and take the job’. That is why I am very grateful to him,” Mr. Domelevo made the shocking revelation during his Thanksgiving Mass at the Christ The King Catholic Church in Accra on Wednesday to mark the end of his embattled service to the nation. According to him, his relationship with President Akufo-Addo has been very cordial since then and he was grateful to him for his support. “We are here to thank God and we are here to do that irrespective of what has happened. I would like to thank former President John Mahama who appointed me as the Auditor-General of Ghana. I thank him for the opportunity to serve my motherland.
