We’ll use 2021 Census data to plan, develop more effectively; get involved – Akufo-Addo
President Akufo-Addo, has reiterated the need for all Ghanaians to get involved in the 2021 National Population and Housing Census. President Akufo-Addo insists the involvement of all Ghanaians will help the government in decision-making. He therefore charged opinion leaders in various communities to rally their people to participate in the exercise. President Akufo-Addo was speaking at an event in Accra. “With the imminent commencement of the 2021 Population and Housing Census by the Ghana Statistical Service on Sunday, June 27, 2021, I urge everyone here to help ensure a successful event. We hope to use the reliable data obtained to plan and develop mother Ghana more effectively.” Already, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has assured Ghanaians that there will be an inclusive exercise where every tribe or ethnic group in Ghana will be captured without discrimination, no matter the size of their numbers. Government Statistician, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, who made this comment while interacting with some journalists on Friday, June 4, 2021, said even though some tribes have started expressing concerns for not seeing their tribe as arranged in the main tribe categories, that does not mean that they have been overlooked or discriminated against. “The census will count everyone who will spend the 27th June in Ghana irrespective of ethnic group be it Fulani, or any other ethnic group. 2024: NDC shivers when it hears Bawumia is coming – Top Lecturer backs VP to lead NPP
A lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University (KTU) Mr. Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey says the New Patriotic Party(NPP) should not make the mistake of not selecting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections. According to him, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s work for the political party is manifested in the number of seats annexed for the NPP in the Northern part of the country in the 2020 elections. He said with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP is currently breaking the monopoly of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region of Ghana “Dr Mahamudu Bawumia when you go to the Northern Region and you go to places like Mion and Karaga from 1992 we started practicing democracy, the NPP has never won those seats but we won it in 2020. The eighteen constituencies in the Northern region has nine NPP Parliamentarians and the NDC also has nine. For now, we are breaking their dominance in the North. When you go to North East, there are six constituencies but we have taken four of them and NDC has two; somethings which has never happened in our history. Even in John Dramani Mahama’s backyard in the Savannah region, NPP has three out of the seven constituencies. It should be on record that their regional capital of Damango is for the NPP. When all these is added together, the NPP has beaten the NDC by one in the old Northern region. “ Mr. Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey said the NPP must not make mistakes because the party has suffered before been able to make an impact in the Northern part of the country and even with their penetration into the Zongo communities. Ghana, Nigeria traders will work in peace – Bagbin declares
Alban Bagbin the Ghana Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has guaranteed that Ghanaian and their neighboring Nigerian traders will work in one accord to help take advantage of the opportunities that exist in the sub-region. The Speaker made the pronouncement when a six-member delegation from Nigeria visited him in Parliament on Tuesday, 8 June 2021. Expressing his gratitude for the visit, Speaker Alban Bagbin stated that he is looking forward to meeting the Nigerian Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila for discussions that will inure to the benefit of the two countries. However, the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner, Gambo Yusuf Hamza appealed to the Ghanaian government to open the borders between Ghana and its neighboring countries for easy movement of goods across the borders. He spoke also about the high resident permit fees and appealed to the Speaker to help re-examine monies charged for residence permit. Amb. Hamza said “we plead with government to review them and these would mean more revenue to Ghana since these charges when reviewed will encourage most foreigners”. Alban S.K. Bagbin the Ghana Speaker of Parliament has challenged legislators in Africa to stay focused on their core mandate of providing oversight on government activities to better serve the people who voted them into power. According to the Speaker, parliament as an institution was clothed with the legitimacy and authority to make a difference in the lives of the people with the right focus. He said the time was right for African parliaments to wake up to that realization. The Speaker was addressing a Kenyan Parliamentary Delegation on Defense and Foreign Relations led by Charles Kilonzo, MP, who called on him in parliament as part of a week-long working visit to Ghana. Speaker Bagbin used the occasion to reiterate his call for increased cooperation among sub-Saharan countries and their counterparts in the East. “I think it is true that in spite of our good relations, we have not fared well in many areas particularly trade. I think we need to do better, we need to start looking more at each other rather than outside. There is nobody that can make you better than yourself, and I think that African countries should start looking within Africa rather than looking outside for any aid”, he said. For his part, the leader of the Kenyan delegation commended Ghana for the role it played in the liberation struggle for their country’s independence, which led to entrenching democracy in most parts of the continent. Mr. Kilionzo said Kenya and Ghana shared a lot in common and that must be directed to benefit the citizens of both countries. He also stressed the importance of deepening parliamentary democracy. Police cautioned the public not to be misled by FixTheCountry conveners
The Ghana Police Service has caution the general public to avoid calls by the conveners of the #FixTheCountry to demonstrate. Police said, even although the Supreme Court has quashed an earlier order granted by a High Court restraining the conveners from protesting, it does not give them the right to protest. The Police explained that the decision of the Supreme Court was based on the indefinite terms in which the ex parte Order was made. “However, the Supreme Court refused to restrain the Ghana Police Service, their agents, assigns, workmen, or workwomen from unlawfully interfering with the constitutional right of the conveners of the FixTheCountry protest from embarking on a public demonstration. “The substantive case between the Police and the conveners on their right to demonstrate is still pending at the High Court (Criminal Division 1) Accra, and slated for hearing on Monday, 14 June 2021,” a Police statement signed by DSP Efia Tenge Head of Public Affairs Unit said. It is recalled that the #FixTheCountry campaigners were served with an injunction by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, 6 May 2021, which prevented them from demonstrating against the government due to the imposition of COVID-19 restrictions on mass gatherings. The campaigners, immediately on 7 May 2021, filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to set aside the order of the high court. Due to the high court injunction, the intended 9 May #FixTheCountry demonstration was done virtually. The campaigners intend to protest against the high cost of living in the country and demand better governance.
