‘There Is No Limit When You Believe’ – Selorm Adadevoh Admonishes Youth
“If you believe strongly in something then there would be no limit. Many at times we just don’t believe enough”. These were the words of the CEO of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh, as he took his turn as the guest speaker at the virtual convocation of the Springboard Roadshow. Selorm Adadevoh, in encouraging the teeming youth who joined the virtual convocation, noted the need for the youth to break away from the limitations they place on themselves. He urged the youth to be positive-minded and believe in their abilities to bring about change. He said when people believed in themselves, there will be no limits to the successes they could achieve. Narrating his journey to becoming the CEO of MTN Ghana as an example, Selorm recounted how he left Hewlett-Packard (HP) Consulting at a point when he was earning so much to come to Ghana to pursue his dream of becoming a CEO. As a result, he dedicated time to acquire more knowledge to place him in a better position to achieve that dream. He said, “ the risk we take and the choices we make in life determine our success ultimately. Even if you have bumps on the road, you need to persevere if you truly believe in your cause and journey. ln pursuit of my dreams and vision, I took several risky decisions because I strongly believed,” he said. Mr. Adadevoh used the occasion to share several attributes and traits of a leader. He mentioned resilience as key to leadership. He explained, “building trust is a fundamental value in leadership shaped by consistency and not intensity. The ability to stay focused and not give up is a key trait of leadership.” Selorm noted that while challenges would come along the way in the leader’s journey, the youth needed to be bold and determined, while remaining focused on their ultimate objectives. The Executive Director of the Springboard Road Show Foundation, Mrs. Comfort Ocran, addressed participants and explained that after years of inspiring and mentoring many young people to go into entrepreneurship, the organization decided to take a new initiative this year. The initiative dubbed, the ‘Springboard Youth Dialogue’ is meant to connect young people to opportunities and policy interventions meant to accelerate their progress, especially in the area of business. Some countries within the ECOWAS sub-region showed off their presidential jets when they arrived in Accra for the 59th ordinary session of the Authority of Heads of States and Governments. Asaase radio, a pro-NPP radio station promoted by Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, President Akufo-Addo’s nephew, described Ghana’s presidential jet as the smallest and oldest after the station gained access to the tarmac of Kotoka International Airport (KIA). Nigerian airliner Muhammadu Buhari, the Asaase Radio report stated, travelled to Ghana for the ECOWAS summit in a Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) 737. The plane has a capacity of between 25 and 50 passengers. “It has a master bedroom, a bathroom with showers, a conference/dining area and a living area, along with state-of-the-art security equipment for the safety of the Nigerian president. The aircraft is known as “Eagle One” and is marked NAF-001. The BBJ 737 is believed to cost between US$90 million and US$150 million,” the report said. Aside from the BBJ, Geoffrey Onyeama, the Nigerian minister of foreign affairs, who travelled ahead of the Nigerian president for the ministerial sessions arrived in a Gulfstream V-SP, which is part of the fleet of aircraft available to the Nigerian presidency. The Nigerian presidential jet, Eagle One The jet used by the foreign minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Côte d’Ivoire’s jet Alassane Ouattara, the President of La Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana’s immediate neighbour to the west, arrived in an Ivorian presidential jet, Airbus 319. This Airbus 319 has a capacity of between 124 and 146 passengers and it belongs to the Airbus A320 family. It is a short-to-medium-range, narrow-body, commercial passenger twin-engine jet airliner manufactured by Airbus. Côte d’Ivoire’s presidential jet Nigérien flight Mohamed Bazoum, the Nigérien president, travelled to Ghana for the ECOWAS summit in a Boeing 737-700. The aircraft provides its users with superior reliability, fuel efficiency and high-value returns. The aeroplane can carry at least 126 passengers or at most 149 passengers. The Nigérien presidential jet taxiing off at Kotoka international airport Background There is an ongoing debate about President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo flying a luxurious £15,000 per hour jet recently for a trip abroad. According to MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the president ditched Ghana’s Presidential Jet, the Falcon, for the ACJ320neo even though the Falcon is in a good shape and could have enabled the president to make his trip abroad better. The MP alleged that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, spent an amount of GHS 2.8 million on his recent travels to only South Africa and France using the services of that private jet. “The Airbus ACJ320neo owned by Acropolis Aviation based in Farnborough, UK and registered as G-KELT, is the most luxurious and the most expensive in the Acropolis fleet. The manufacturers describe it as “the most outstanding ambassador for Airbus Corporate Jets.” It costs the Ghanaian taxpayer approximately £15,000 an hour when President Akufo-Addo rents it”, the legislator alleged in a post on Facebook. He accused the President of wasting the money “to satisfy his insatiable appetite and comfort at the expense of the suffering masses”. “Let’s further analyze President Akufo-Addo’s latest trip to Europe: per Flightradar24, the G-KELT aircraft left Accra with the President to Paris on the 16th of May — a 6 and half hour duration. Airlifted the President from Paris to Johannesburg for 11 hours on the 23rd of May.” “Then Johannesburg to Accra on the 25th of May was a five and half hour flight. This gives us accumulated flight travel of 23 hours; so at £15,000 an hour, it thus cost us a colossal £345,000. At the current exchange rate, that is a staggering GHS2,828,432.80,” the post read further. Akufo-Addo commission Bolga East Assembly building
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Monday, 21st June 2021, commissioned a newly constructed building for the Bolgatanga East District Assembly, following his working visit of the Upper East Region, which saw him visit Bolgatanga, Binduri and Bawku. Construction of the new Assembly Building commenced in the first term of President Akufo-Addo, with the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, and other officials of state assisting the President in the commissioning at Zuarungu, the site of the building. Earlier that day, President Akufo-Addo was at the palace of the Zugraan Bawku Naba, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, in Bawku, to pay a courtesy call on him as part of his visit to the Region and the chiefs, queenmothers and elders of the Kusuag Traditional Area. In his address, the President thanked the Bawku Naba for the warm welcome and the strong words of commendation that gave him and members of his government. “I came also to thank you and the people of the Upper East for your support of me and my party during the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections. As you spoke to me frankly, I have to speak to you frankly as well,” he said. The President continued, “I have to say that I was very disappointed with the results of the election in the Upper East Region, especially when you consider the work that we have done in this Region. Whatever the case, at least we have one seat and that is the MP for Binduri. I have to thank you for that.” President Akufo-Addo was delighted to note that the various interventions that the government has put in place since 2017 – Free Senior High School, Planting for Food and Jobs, One Village One Dam, One District One Warehouse – are all being well received here in the Upper East region. “I am also very happy to hear from you about the peace in the area. That is the work of the Bawku Interethnic Peace Committee. The handicap of the committee that you referred to with regards to transport will be solved. Very soon the car you wanted for the committee will be delivered to you. We have to do everything possible to maintain the peace and security of the area,” he said. Touching on the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs, which, he said, “has been going on very well here”, the President noted that “last year, although we targeted 47,761 farmers under the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme, in the end we registered 66,680 farmers, 20,000 more than were originally scheduled are now under the programme.” The President added that six (6) warehouses in the Kusaug Traditional Area are being constructed, and are 80% complete. Additionally, he added that 40 dams have been built in the Kusuag traditional area as part of the One Dam One Village initiative. “In the same way under the 1-District-1-Factory policy, very soon we are going to establish a guinea fowl processing factory here in Bawku. I am so happy to hear the commitment you have made to stop the smuggling of fertilizer from the area. It is a very important commitment, and I applaud you very much for it,” he added. On roads, President Akufo-Addo indicated that the road construction situation in the Upper East is improving, and was happy to see that the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Polimakom road is now 80% complete, and will be completed soon. “Bawku Naba, the NDC never did that road. I have come and I have done the road for you. I know how dear the road is to your heart, and that is why I have said to you that in my time I will complete that road. I am almost there. In the same way the Bawku principal road, as well as the bypass for the Bawku highway are also going to start very soon because I hear that the consultant has begun the stakeholder engagement which should end very soon. That will pave the way. I want everybody to cooperate with the work that is going to be done to enable these developments to take place,” he said. President Akufo-Addo assured that, under Agenda 111, districts without hospitals in the Kusaug area will be provided with hospitals, “just as also the extension of electricity is part of the measures that are being unfolded, which you will also be included in”. On measures to strengthen the security along the borders of the Upper East Region, the President told the Bawku Naba that a permanent barracks is going to be established in Bawku to curb the threat of terrorism there. Ken Agyapong cuts sod to build cardio centre at 37 Military Hospital
Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has cut sod for the construction of an 80-bed Cardiothoracic Centre at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. The Centre will have a Cardiothoracic Training Centre and Conference Room, VVIP Clinic, 3 operating theatres, an Intensive Care Unit, Executive Clinic, Dialysis Unit, X-Ray unit, Robotics Unit, Pharmacy and an Out-Patients Department among other essential units. Currently, the 80-year-old hospital refers all cardiothoracic cases to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for treatment. The sod-cutting ceremony is a follow-up on a promise made by Mr Agyapong in 2020 when he presented some personal protective equipment to the facility in response to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in Ghana. The Chief of Defence Staff, Seth Amoama, in his opening remarks, said the MP’s gesture was magnanimous, adding that the project was one of great significance to healthcare delivery. Mr Agyapong, who is the Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, expressed his contentment about the attention the project has received so far. He said upon thorough research, he realised the need for such specialised healthcare in the sub-region due to its rising population and the huge number of people who would require such specialised healthcare. Former Minister Zongo Development and Inner Cities, Mustapha Hamid has been appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). His appointment takes effect from 1 July 2021. Mr Hamid will be responsible for overseeing all operations in the downstream petroleum sector. Dr Hamid, aged 50, previously served in the first-term government of President Akufo-Addo as the minister of Information and subsequently as the minister for inner-city and Zongo development. He also served as the deputy national campaign manager for President Akufo-Addo’s successful second-term bid in 2020 and was in charge of campaign communications. The former UCC Lecturer succeeds Hassan Tampuli, the immediate past NPA chief executive, who was elected as the MP for Gushegu on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party in December 2020 and has since been nominated to serve as a deputy minister of Transport. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid entered Tamale Secondary School in 1987 to sit for his Advanced level examinations. In 1991 he entered the University of Cape Coast to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree, eventually majoring in religious studies. We see politicians flaunting cars, houses in less than four years; heed the call of #FixTheCountry campaigners — Tsatsu Tsikata to government
Legal luminary Tsatsu Tsikata has admonished the Akufo-Addo-led government to heed the calls of the #FixTheCountry conveners. He said heeding that call by government will demonstrate to disillusioned youth that it is responding in a constructive manner because the things the youth are calling their attention to are not alien to the country. Mr Tsikata pointed out that it is difficult to stop these developments with the “negative” reaction from government by trying to ban the “legitimate expression” of the frustration the youth are feeling about how things are going in the country. He said this in an exclusive interview with Alfred Ocansey of TV3, on the 13th anniversary of his incarceration for willfully causing financial loss to the state , a sentence which was deemed a political persecution and overturned in 2016. Touching on the recent call by the youth with #FixTheCountry social media campaign, Mr Tsikata said: “It’s difficult to stop these processes just by this kind of negative reaction of trying to ban the expression that people are giving to their frustration and their sense of things not being done right, things going wrong. “So I think the answer should be to heed the call to fix the country because heeding that call would enable you to demonstrate that you are responding in a constructive way because some of the things our attention is being drawn to are not mysteries to us. I mean the issues about corruption, the issues we hear day and night, about young people shown in the media flaunting thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars because they happen to be close to a certain position of power. “Or young people who have occupied a certain position for barely three or four years, they have a lot of houses, real estate, I mean if these things happen people will get to know of them and these are the things that infuriate young people. I am not saying young people themselves don’t have issues that they need to address in the sense of what their contribution should be, you know, I think some young people have also deviated from the straight and narrow and they are part of the corrupt system.” Mr Tsikata, however, expressed confidence in the youth by being able to bond together to form a movement to push the powers that be to #FixTheCountry rather than the individualistic way of each trying to use their own means to outdo each other in acquiring wealth at the detriment of the country. He said his comfort comes from the fact that the youth have a unanimous voice in calling the country back to order. He further pointed out that he can understand the sense of urgency coming from the youth to push the leaders to fix the country because they have more years to live ahead of them than the older people in power who have only a few years to live for just as he felt when he was a young man rubbing shoulders with older people in his legal career. Convert Binduri Community Day High School to boarding school– Zug-Raan appealed to government
As part of his request to the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government, the Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, Zug-Raan, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has appealed to the government to convert the Binduri Community Day High School to a boarding school to help curb the incidences of pregnancies among the girl who, for lack of accommodation, are living in local houses and thus exposed to premature sexual activities with irresponsible men/boys. According to the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Network, teenage pregnancy cases among girls aged 10 to 14 in the region has increased from 103 in 2019 to 142 in 2020, representing a 38 percent increase Bawku Naba made the passionate appeal during President Akufo-Addo’s visit to his palace as part of his 2-day tour to the Upper East on June 21, 2021. “We would be grateful if you could make the Binduri Community Day High School a boarding school to help curb the incidences of pregnancies among the girls who, for lack of accommodation, are living in local houses and thus exposed to premature sexual activities with irresponsible men/boys. Similarly, I am appealing for the completion of the Community Day Senior High School buildings at Sapeliga, Pusiga and Garu that have been abandoned for some time now. This will increase the enrollment of our children, especially the girl child in the free senior high school programme”.
