NDC to commemorate the death of late President Mills on Saturday
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will on Saturday, July 24, commemorate the ninth anniversary of the death of late former President Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at Asomdwee Park, near the Osu Castle in Accra at 0700 hours. A statement issued by Mr Emmanuel Siisi Quainoo, Member of the Planning Committee said the ceremony would be conducted in accordance with the COVID-19 protocols. The dress code for the much-anticipated ceremony will be white or Prof. Mills cloth. Many bigwigs of the party including Mrs Ernestina Naadu Mills, widow, former President John Dramani Mahama, Mr Ofosu Ampofo, National Chairman and Mr Asiedu Nketsia, General Secretary and other party leaders and supporters are expected to grace the occasion. The former President died on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital three days after his birthday. Since his demise, the NDC and family have held public lectures to honour him but last year’s event was called off following the outbreak of the coronavirus and its attendant restrictions on public gatherings. However, former President John Dramani Mahama took to social media and eulogized late President Mills saying “You will forever remain in our hearts”. “You would have been 76 years today, Prof. Though in eternity, memories of your sterling qualities and principled leadership are still fresh with us. Akufo-Addo rendered apology to the people of Wa for military brutalities
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the President of the Republic of Ghana has rendered apology to the overlord of the Waala Traditional Area, Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, and to the people of Wa for the brutalities meted out to some residents by some ignorant soldiers earlier this month. Addressing Waala Chief Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV on Tuesday, 13th July 2021, at the beginning of his 2-day working visit to the Upper West Region, President Akufo-Addo indicated that the unfortunate incident was one of the reasons for his visit to the Region. According to the President, even though the Minister for Defence, the Minister for the Interior, as well as the hierarchy of the military have come to apologise to residents of Wa, and have taken measures to deal with the soldiers who perpetrated the act, he also deemed it necessary to come to Wa personally and render an apology. “I have come to add my voice to that of the soldiers, as well as the Minister for Defence, to say how sorry I am about the incident, and to let you know that we will do everything possible to make sure that such an incident is not repeated,” he said. “And I want to congratulate you on the very statesman-like pronouncements that you made on that occasion. $5m bribe: Vitus Azeem backs calls for independent probe against Chief Justice
A former Director for the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) and anti-corruption crusader, Vitus Azeem has supported calls for an independent investigation into a bribery allegation levelled against the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah. Just like the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Azeem is sceptical that neither the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council nor the Judicial Service’s investigation into the alleged misconduct will be impartial. He believes an independent body such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) would conduct a more credible investigation. “The General Legal Council should not be the one investigating the matter because the Chief Justice is the Chair of that body. I think CHRAJ should be the body that should investigate the matter,” said Mr. Azeem on Eyewitness News. Justice Anin-Yeboah denied the allegations which were contained in the response of a lawyer, Akwasi Afrifa, against a petition filed against him by his client at the disciplinary committee of the General Legal Council. He has petitioned the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter. There have since been calls by the NDC for the Chief Justice to step aside while investigations are conducted into the allegation. Chief Justice could remain in office Responding to such calls, Mr. Azeem said the Chief Justice could remain in office so far as the investigation does not specifically border on malpractices in the Judiciary. “I think if it is an institution like CHRAJ that is investigating the matter, once it does not have to do with the overall malpractices in the Judiciary he could remain there while the independent body is carrying out the investigation.” The case Ogyeedom IV dragged Mr. Afrifa to the GLC alleging that the lawyer collected $100,000 from him with a promise to help get a favourable judgement on his behalf as a client. Ogyeedom Atta IV asked the council to order Mr. Afrifa to refund the $100,000, saying the lawyer failed to deliver on his promise. Senyo Hosi’s lawyers demand re-listing of defamation case against Ken Agyapong
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi, is demanding his day in court in a defamation case he brought against the MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong. This follows a decision by a High Court in Accra to strike out the case for want of prosecution. Mr. Hosi’s lawyers have filed an affidavit and a writ requesting the re-listing of the case, pointing out that Mr. Agyapong’s lawyers have failed to attend several hearings and that the court rather took the decision to strike out the case on the one day that Mr. Agyapong’s lawyers showed up in court. “The record of the Honourable Court will show that Plaintiff/Applicant has diligently prosecuted this suit over the entire period with Counsel attending court at every adjourned date and never once defaulting in complying with any order or direction of the Honourable Court,” Mr. Hosi’s lawyers said in their affidavit. “That this Honourable Court as now differently constituted may upon examination of the record discover that Defendants/Respondents have been overly indulged and are largely to blame for the delay this case has witnessed over the period. That for a year or more Defendants/Respondents had neglected to deliver their amended Statement of Defence prompting several warnings from the Honourable Court and Counsel for Plaintiff/Applicant would be highly commended by the Honourable Court for actions including placing phone calls to Counsel for Defendants/Respondents when absent, adjourning the case and issuing hearing notices and even waiving cost when the Honourable Court was minded to award costs.” Mr. Hosi filed the defamation case against Kennedy Agyapong after the Assin Central MP accused the CBOD CEO of bribery. Mr. Agyapong claimed that Mr. Hosi had paid a one-million-dollar bribe to a former CEO of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST), Alfred Obeng, to influence the reversal of a contaminated fuel sale by BOST to two companies. BOST’s sale of five million litres of off-spec fuel generated media discussions, forcing the then Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, to set up a committee to investigate the circumstances under which the fuel was contaminated and later sold. In his suit filed in July 2017, Mr. Hosi was demanding damages to the tune of GHC5,000,000 against Kennedy Agyapong and GHC3,000,000 against Kencity Media, a media company owned by Mr. Agyapong. The case is expected to be re-listed on July 26, 2021.
Ghana Vice President honored Africa’s digital revolutionary leader of the decade
