NDC files another election petition
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed an election petition – this time with the Inspector-General of Police – over alleged infractions by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) in last year’s polls. According to the legal team of the party, this is in direct response to the apparent challenge thrown by the EC over allegations made by John Dramani Mahama. After Mr Mahama alleged that the EC had stuffed the ballot boxes with over one million votes to favour incumbent Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the EC called on police to investigate this claim. “This is a grave matter that undermines the credibility of our electoral process and should not be ignored,” a Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Eric Bossman Asare, told journalists at a press conference on Monday, October 25. “We call on [John Dramani Mahama] to provide evidence to support this claim,” he demanded. “This is not a matter that should be ignored and we call on the Ghana Police Service to investigate.” At a press briefing on Tuesday, November 9, member of NDC’s Legal Team Abraham Amaliba disclosed that “the party saw it fit to as it were present to the IGP the evidence that we have complained about that over one million presidential ballot papers were printed by the EC and that we thought that that affected the credibility of the elections”. He said the largest opposition party wants the conduct of the EC to be brought to book. The two-pronged petition, according Mr Amaliba, wants the IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare “to investigate and then prosecute persons who were involved in the printing of the over one million excess ballot papers”. “These persons could also include Innolink, one of the companies that had the responsibility to print the ballot papers and whose care we saw the excess one million ballots.” He said the second part is seeking an update on the “atrocities and violence” that took place in the elections. “What has the police done so far? Ranting won’t make Ghanaians re-elect you – Buaben Asamoa tells Mahama
The Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buaben Asamoa, says former President John Dramani Mahama is ranting because he thinks Ghanaians will re-elect him in 2024. Former President John Dramani Mahama is currently on a ‘Thank You” tour which will end today, November 10, 2021. John Dramani Mahama during his tour said the Akufo-Addo government intends to increase taxes, as it prepares to present the 2022 budget. He said the economy had been run into a ditch and that the country is reeling under debt and wonders how much more hardship the people of Ghana can endure under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. He called on the Akufo-Addo administration to up its game in dealing with the hardships Ghanaians are saddled with at the moment. “So, the economy has been run into a ditch and I know that in a few days’ time, they will read the budget and it’s the intention of this government to increase taxes and increase tariffs on electricity and water and all that… How much more hardship can the people of Ghana take?” he wondered, adding: “We, as the NDC, will play our part and give a voice to the voiceless and let people in authority know what the people of Ghana are going through and, so, we shall play our role properly as the opposition in this country,” Mahama said during the tour. Addressing the comments of the former President in an interview with the host of ATINKA FM’s Am Drive, Yaw Buaben Asamoa explained that the former President is still peeved considering the margin with which he was defeated in the 2020 general elections. According to Buaben Asamoa, the NPP is focused and will continue to work in the interest of Ghanaians. “If you are in opposition and you want the people to re-elect you this is how you speak and so some of these comments we the NPP will not worry our head. Captain Smart apologizes to Mahama over Dubai house, bank account allegations
• Captain Smart has apologized to John Mahama over allegations of corruption • The former president is said to have acquired houses in Dubai years ago • The journalist says he personally travelled to verify the corruption claims Captain Smart has clarified that reports suggesting years ago that former President John Dramani Mahama was so corrupt that he had houses in the United Arab Emirates were palpable falsehood. Smart issued multiple apologies to the former president on his Onua Maakye show this week stating that the accusations against Mahama were so coordinated and ceaseless that many people believed it to be true. According to him, he personally travelled to Dubai in search of the said houses, adding that he did not find even a single room in the name of Mahama let alone a house. He continued that contrary to reports that Mahama had stashed monies away, his checks also proved negative. “It was in this country we were told that Mahama had purchased houses in Dubai. Is it not so? Mahama I want to apologize to you for doing that story. “I saw it in the newspapers and online, sorry John, sorry, sorry. That Mahama is corrupt, that he has bought a house in Dubai. I deliberately travelled to Dubai looking for Mahama’s house. I did not see even one. Sorry Mahama,” he added. “Mahama does not have a single room in Dubai, not a single room. Anyone who knows a single room belonging to Mahama in Dubai should provide the house number, I will resign tomorrow. But we heaped those accusations on Mahama,” the Onua TV host stated. He reiterated that he was making speaking today in the interest of standing for the truth and exonerating the former president despite not being a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC. “I am not of the NDC stock and I will never vote for the NDC, I will not vote for Mahama but I stand for the truth. I will tell you the plain truth. We keep insisting that Mahama has bank accounts and has stashed away monies. Mahama has no account with even one dollar in it,” he added. In recent months, Ghana has experienced a high-profile political confession when former NDC member Allotey Jacobs revealed that serial corruption accusations levelled against former president John Agyekum Kufuor were lies meant to achieve a political end. Demonstrations don’t build roads – Amoako Atta
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has stated that he gets surprised when persons who should know better get themselves involved in demonstrations for their deplorable roads to be fixed. According to him, the government is committed to fixing the roads adding that demonstrating would not get their roads in the best shape they want it. “It is unreasonable for anybody to say that all roads everywhere should be fixed simultaneously. So these demonstrations should stop. Sometimes you get people who are supposed to know better, well-educated people who should advise their colleagues joining demonstrations. Demonstrations don’t build roads,” he told the media when inspecting the 31.7km Kwafokrom to Apedwa road in the Eastern Region which forms part of the Accra-Kumasi dualization project. The Road and Highways Minister also asked contractors working on various road projects to speed up work. “I have charged the contractors to ensure that they complete the stretch of the road covering a distance of 31km by the end of the year. I have asked them to introduce night work to compensate for any delay,” he said. Residents of Manso Agoroyesum in the Ashanti Region have embarked on a demonstration over the deplorable nature of roads in the area. The residents complain that the poor nature of the roads in the Amansie South District exposes residents to respiratory diseases. According to them, the district is enriched with minerals, timber, and cocoa yet they cannot boast of any good road network. They further stated that since President Nana Akufo-Addo took over management of the country from the Mahama administration in 2016, they are yet to have any meaningful development especially with road construction. The Roads and Highway Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta, had threatened contractors who have abandoned their sites over lack of funds will lose their contracts. Speaking on the floor of Parliament Friday 6th November 2021, Mr. Amoako Atta revealed that most of the contractors who have abandoned their work usually lack capacity to deliver but rather use the delay in releasing funds by the government as an excuse. “There are so many contractors in our constituencies who have been awarded contracts but are not working under the guise of non-payment. Amin Adam calls for global compact on energy transition
A deputy minister of Energy, Dr Amin Adam, has called for a global compact on the energy transition to address Africa’s peculiar circumstances. He made the call when he addressed a gathering of African energy stakeholders at the maiden edition of the African Energy Week (AEW) in Cape Town, South Africa. Re-emphasising Ghana’s current position on the global advocacy for energy transition, Dr Adam underscored the need for the conversation of cleaner energy to be had within the context of Africa’s current growth trajectory. To address the inequalities in the global energy space, the deputy minister, who is also the MP for Karaga, called for a global compact on the energy transition, which would ensure that European banks vary financing policies in favour of oil and gas projects in Africa. He said under a special dispensation and sanction waiver, African producers divert a portion of the funding to develop high integrity carbon credits through reforestation and carbon removals, thus, effectively offsetting a portion of the hydrocarbons they continue to produce. African natural gas, he said, has been given the status as a transition fuel for a longer period to allow gas reserves to be used when displacing a more carbon-intense fossil fuel globally such as coal. “The energy transition should not be divorced from the necessity for universal energy access, as there are about 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa that have no access to electricity”, Dr Amin said. “Reduction in carbon-based energy consumption through energy efficiency should be promoted in Africa, as Africa’s emissions remain very low”, he added. To further re-establish the position of Ghana, the deputy minister referred to a statement articulated at COP 26 in Glasgow by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. In his address, the President stated: “The Almighty has blessed our lands with abundant natural resources, and it would be wholly unfair for the world to demand that Africa abandon the exploitation of these same resources needed to finance her development and help us to cope better with the threat of climate change, at a time when many countries on the continent have only just discovered them”. “Ghana acknowledges the importance and effects of climate change, and the urgent need to combat it, and we acknowledge equally the importance of protecting our development”. “We believe that a balance must be struck and maintained between our social, economic and environmental imperatives”. 2022 budget: Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo sent strong message to Ofori-Atta
Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo, the Secretary of the University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has sent a strict warning to Mr. Ken Ofori Atta, Ghana’s Finance Minister as he planned to present the 2022 budget statement a few days ahead. Apexnewsgh.com report Prof Gyampo insisted in his letter to the Finance Minister that enough provision must be made for University teachers. An Open Letter to the Finance Minister, Dear Sir, 1. As you prepare to read the budget for 2022, I respectfully urge you not to do any such presentation without factoring the poor Conditions of Service of University Teachers. One of the abused refrain used in countering our demands this year, has been the mantra that “we did not factor UTAG demands in the 2021 budget”. 2. Now, sir, you have the opportunity to consider and adequately provide for our needs. Kindly be reminded that, we went on strike this year because, we only wanted government to restore us to the salary values of 2013. As you may be aware, in 2013, the entry point monthly salary of a University Lecturer was a pittance hovering around USD 2,084. In 2021, the same lecturer is paid around USD 997. The demand of lecturers this year, has been a simple restoration of the 2013 salary values. 3. It is my plea that you do not go present eloquent figures for all sectors and forget about the main demand of University Teachers. The MoA signed to increase annual research allowance (not monthly salary) to USD 1600, which works out to about only USD 130 a month top up of our research allowance, has been rejected by UTAG members. Please be reminded that research allowances are not salaries. They are monies to undertake research to discover knowledge to aid teaching. Also, no serious researcher discovers anything with USD 130 a month. 4. Our silence now, is only strategic. We have been concerned about the plight of our students and parents, hence decided not to abandon them mid-stream in the academic year. Now many of them across the country are on vacation and Legon, the Premier University vacates this month. It is our hope that all interventions including adequate budgetary provisions would be made to cater for the very small demands of University Teachers. 5. I respectfully urge you not to go present figures that improve the Conditions of Service of your colleague political appointees and their article 71 office holders and get others to plead with University Teachers to accept to live in poverty and poor Conditions of Service. Sir, it won’t work this time. 6. We will vacate and reopen no more if you treat us with contempt and disrespect once again. Given the increased trust deficit, please be assured that no amount of appeal from whatever quarter would get us to rescind our decision, should we strike again. The last resort may be to get the very moribund National Labor Commission to send us to court again and to seek our imprisonment. People died to build this country for us and we are willing to go to prison just to secure the interest of the future generation of University Teachers. 7. So, sir, by all means, please go ahead and present the budget. But be mindful of the indubitable value of industrial harmony in shaping the success of whatever purpose your budget seeks to achieve.
