UER: Farmers advised to maintain some presence in their farm
The Regional Wildlife Manager of the Ghana Forestry Commission responsible for the five regions of the North Joseph Kwasi Binlinla, has advised farmers within the two main Western and Eastern corridors to maintain some presence in their farms as enter into their yearly farming activities. Meanwhile, explaining some of their activities, Mr. Binlinla said: “One of the things we have been doing is to teach farmers what to do to protect their farms and there are some basic things, for instance, farmers just tying a rope around the farm will scare elephant away from the farm and there are testimonies of farmers who have done that over the years and have successfully harvested their crops”. He advised that farmers maintaining a presence on their farms when their crops are getting ready will scare the elephants away from coming near their farms. Farmers evading into the forest reserve make elephants uncomfortable–Regional Wildlife Manager

He said: “People in the past have lived with these animals someway somehow peacefully until the recent years that we have started experiencing some kind of conflict existing within the people within the area and the elephants in particular, as for the other smaller animals we don’t hear so much of them these days. The elephants that have been in existence in the area called the Eastern Wildlife Corridor are the Savanna Elephants and I must also say that the area we called the Eastern Wildlife Corridor also has some forest reserves that have been gazetted by the government and are supposed to also serve as an abode for these elephants”. “So, the conflict has been escalating why? Because people have increased, the population over the years has increased. Of course, the animal would have also multiplied because they also filtrate. So, what we are doing is to strike a balance, in as much as people are very important, we think that animals are also important”. He explained According to the Regional Manager, they cannot do away with animals, stressing that we have to try to live with them peacefully so that they will continue to do whatever good thing God has endowed them to do for their survival and for the ecological functioning of ecosystems. MTN Group settles US$300 million eurobonds
Following on from strong first half 2022 results, MTN Group today announces the further deleveraging of the balance sheet with the early settlement of US$300 million in eurobonds with a 2024 maturity date.This brings MTN’s dollar-denominated debt down to 35% of total holding company (Holdco) debt on a H1 2022 proforma basis. In late August, MTN invited eligible holders of the US$750 million eurobond – due to mature in November 2024 – to tender their notes for purchase by the company for cash. The offer attracted tenders of more than US$482 million. This was significantly more than the US$250 million originally intended for early settlement. As a result, MTN raised the final acceptance amount to US$300 million, which will be settled on Tuesday 6 September 2022. “In line with our Ambition 2025 strategy, we are committed to deleveraging the balance sheet faster in line with our capital allocation framework,” said MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita. “This week’s early settlement supports delivery of this commitment as well as of the execution and delivery of our medium-term guidance to maintain the Holdco leverage below 1.5x.” MTN Group Chief Financial Officer Tsholofelo Molefe said that as the settlement would be funded from available cash balances, it did not affect the pro-forma Holdco leverage of 0.8x at 30 June 2022. “However, on a pro-forma basis, the settlement improves the end-June 2022 ratio of non-rand to rand debt to 35:65 from the 42:58 ratio reported in the Group’s interim results.” At end-December 2021, the Holdco leverage was 1.0x. The improvement in the first half of 2022 to 0.8x was boosted by the repatriation of R9.4 billion in cash from our operating companies (including R4.5 billion from MTN Nigeria). Francis Kofi Okesu, the Krachi East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has been found dead inside a hotel in Kumasi. Even though is still not clear what took Mr. Kofi Okesu to the Ashanti Region capital his dead body was found in the room he booked. Mr Okesu was not the only dead body found but also the Dean of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Oti Region. According to the Regional Director, the high weather temperature witnessed in the Upper East Region has a huge effect on the entire quality of the cashew nut.“So, if you looked at it, is not very good in the Upper East unlike the southern sector when they harvest, the temperature is not so high on the nut”. He said Adding that, there is an oil content in the cashew nut and because of the high temperature when it heats up, it affects the nut quality and the buyer doesn’t like it that way. “For the buyers, before they come to buy, they have to do a cutting test and look at the quality before they can price it. If you have a very good quality that is big and good then, it attracts a premium price. So, if the nut is not good, they might reject it or buy it at a very low price. Mr. Ennor also sighted the short rainy period in the region as another reason people of the Upper East Region cannot risk venturing into cashew plantations.In Upper East Region, we expect the rain to come around May, then in June, we can even plant. But here is the case for the past two years, In June we expected the rain to come, but it didn’t come, it goes into July and July too as we experienced this year, it was totally dry. So, imagine if we had planted cashew seedlings very young like that of Mango or any of these products, it will die off. Mr. Ennor stressed And when you are talking about plantations is from ten acres onwards and who will have the urge to do that one and again as a region, we don’t have large land that we give to people to plant these plantations and per the custom of our people, the land they own belongs to the people and the family. So, one particular farmer going to occupy this huge land, denying the other family members over years, is not customarily favorable. Even if you are able to establish during the rainy season, in the dry season people will leave all their animals to come and destroy your plantation, and aside from that, a bushfire is also likely to destroy everything. Over 320, 000 Farmers in Upper East Region registered under Planting for Food and Jobs
We have registered over 320,000 farmers under the Plant for Food and Jobs (PFJ). This is according to Mr. Francis Ennor, the Upper East Regional Director of Agriculture. Apenewsgh.com report The Regional Agric Director made the revelation during an Exclusive Interview with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com on Thursday, September 1, 2022.According to him, the government has contracted Broadspectrum an I.T Company to register farmers in the five northern regions. “So, as a Region, we have over 320,000 farmers that have been registered and the registrations are still ongoing. So, if you are a farmer and you want to have access to the subsidized products, you walk to any of the input dealers who had received the subsidized fertilizer or the seeds, you only need to mention your name and they will open the system and if your name is there, it will show on the system your picture, your farm size and they will ask you the type of fertilizer you want”. The Agric Director Explained He said, the ongoing registration exercise for farmers is a programme under the PFJ introduced by government to help get accurate records of farmers in the region. “ So, this is a programme also under the Planting for Food and Jobs the government also introduced to make sure that we get the exact number of we are dealing with so that we can do proper planning for them. With that, you will that in the region these are the number of farmers we are dealing with. That will also help to monitor the fertilizer that comes in and go out”.
