GEA set to train 19,324 Youth in vocational skills
The Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) is set to empower a total of 19,324 young individuals with employable skills in vocational and agriculture farm-based institutions within the Upper East Region of Ghana. This initiative is part of the GEA’s larger national program which aims to train 250,000 youths across the country, with a focus on 70 percent women and ten percent individuals with disabilities. The official announcement was made by Mr. Mohammed Bukari, the Regional Director of the GEA, during the launch of the Mastercard Foundation Business in a Box (BIZBOX) Project in Bolgatanga. The goal of this project is to equip young people with essential skills and provide them with start-up resources to address the issue of unemployment in Ghana. Mr. Bukari emphasized the importance of the youth using the training and resources provided to them effectively to not only benefit themselves but to also create job opportunities for others. He warned that those who fail to utilize the tools given to them will have them taken away and passed on to those who are more willing to make use of them. During the event, the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, urged Ghanaian youth to tap into their creativity and innovation to generate wealth for themselves and the nation. He noted that solving pertinent societal problems through entrepreneurship could bring financial success, citing examples of successful applications developed by youth in Western countries. Hon. Yakubu highlighted youth unemployment as a major concern of the government and outlined various flagship programs aimed at youth development and job creation. These programs include the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Youth Employment Agency (YEA), One-District, One-Factor (1D1F), Youth in Afforestation, Free Senior High School, and the establishment of the Commission of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) to promote technical vocational education among Ghanaian youth. Ms Abigail Elorm Akwambea Mensah, Deputy National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has spoken out against Majority Leader Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin for his derogatory comments about the NDC’s vice presidential candidate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. During a debate on the State of the Nation Address, Afenyo-Markin criticized the NDC’s choice of running mate, questioning Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s age and suitability for the role. In response, Ms Mensah demanded an unconditional apology, denouncing the attack as a denigration of womanhood. Ghanaian Actress Yvonne Nelson Criticizes Government Over Power Outages
Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson has taken to social media to criticize the government for the recent intermittent power outages experienced across the country. In a tweet on Tuesday, the actress called on President Akufo-Addo’s government to find a lasting solution to the ongoing issue. Yvonne Nelson, known for her activism in the past, had previously led a demonstration against the John Mahama government in 2015 over power outages. Alongside other celebrities, such as Van Vicker, Prince David Osei, and DKB, she demanded a solution to the problem at that time. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has warned Ghanaians to expect more power outages during peak demand hours between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. According to the ECG, 630 distribution transformers in various communities are currently operating above capacity due to increased power consumption, leading to blown fuses and broken conductors. Despite the challenges, the ECG assured customers that transformer upgrading and new projects are underway to improve the power supply reliability.
