For the third time, Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond‘s attempt to introduce the Import Restrictions Bill has been stopped by Parliament.

The proposed legislation, called the Export and Import (Restrictions on Importation of Selected Strategic Product) Regulations, 2023, aims to limit the importation of 22 strategic goods into Ghana.

However, the Minority in Parliament strongly opposed the bill, expressing concerns from various business groups and highlighting potential negative effects on the country’s businesses.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin delayed the presentation of the bill until November 30, 2023, urging the Minister to address the concerns raised by the Minority before proceeding.

This delay is seen as a move to ensure thorough examination and consideration of the proposed legislation.
