Ms Abigail Elorm Akwambea Mensah, Deputy National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has spoken out against Majority Leader Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin for his derogatory comments about the NDC’s vice presidential candidate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
During a debate on the State of the Nation Address, Afenyo-Markin criticized the NDC’s choice of running mate, questioning Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s age and suitability for the role. In response, Ms Mensah demanded an unconditional apology, denouncing the attack as a denigration of womanhood.
Highlighting the importance of women’s inclusivity in politics, especially in the wake of International Women’s Day celebrations, Ms Mensah praised Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s achievements as a trailblazing academic and politician. She also pointed out the political motivation behind the attack, accusing the NPP of age-based discrimination.
Encouraging women to rally behind Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s historic bid for vice presidency, Ms Mensah called for solidarity to combat political stereotyping and ensure active participation of women in politics. She concluded with a call for unity to bring pride to womanhood in Ghana.
