Alhaji Sanusi Issah, the former Upper East Regional Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sparked controversy with his recent statement that going to Hajj is not meant for poor people. Apexnewsgh reports
He made this pronouncement on a morning show program on A1 Radio, a local station in Bolgatanga, on Thursday.
Alhaji Sanusi’s comment was in response to a statement made by the NDC Regional Communication Officer, Abdallah Salifu, who accused the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government of making it difficult for Muslims to afford traveling to the 2024 Hajj to Mecca by increasing the fare to a “whooping” Ghc 75,000 per person.
The former NPP director’s statement has generated a lot of discussion among the Muslim community, with many expressing disagreement with his view.
According to information picked by callers of the programme, some Muslim personalities who could not afford the government’s Ghc 75,000, have even managed to travel to Hajj on their own, paying significantly less than the government’s fee, with some reporting costs of Ghc 25,000 and Ghc 30,000.
The controversy highlights the challenges faced by many Muslims in affording the Hajj pilgrimage, a sacred duty in Islam, and the perceived insensitivity of the government’s pricing. The debate raises questions about the accessibility of religious obligations to all, regardless of socio-economic status.
