Speaker Alban Bagbin Vows to Maintain Parliament’s Independence
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the independence of the legislative body, stating that Parliament will not be treated as an agent of government during his tenure. This declaration comes as Ghana marks three decades of parliamentary democracy.
Launching the Democracy Cup, a historic initiative celebrating this milestone, Bagbin emphasized the significance of the current hung parliament, noting that it demands a new approach. “This parliament is a completely new game,” he said, highlighting the need to adapt rules previously suited for a majoritarian system.
Bagbin expressed pride in his role as Speaker of the first-ever hung parliament in Ghana, emphasizing his determination to ensure Parliament maintains its autonomy. “There is no way anybody can push me aside and make Parliament an agent of government. It won’t happen while I am alive,” he asserted.
Additionally, the Speaker urged the Electoral Commission to guarantee a free, fair, and credible electoral process, further solidifying Parliament’s commitment to democratic principles. With this stance, Bagbin reaffirms his dedication to upholding the integrity and independence of Ghana’s legislative body.
