In a surprising revelation, Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has disclosed that he doesn’t own a house outside Nigeria. Despite his vast wealth, Dangote stated that he only owns two houses in Nigeria – one in his hometown of Kano and another in Lagos. Apexnewsgh reports
Whenever he visits Abuja, he stays in a rented apartment.
Dangote’s net worth is estimated to be $13.9 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which listed him as Africa’s richest man for the 13th consecutive year. His fortune has grown by $400 million in the last year alone.
The 66-year-old businessman made his fortune in cement and sugar and recently opened an oil refinery in Lagos. He made the disclosure while speaking to journalists at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery on Sunday.
Dangote’s comments have sparked a wide reaction on social media, with some praising his decision as a wise business move. He explained that his reason for not owning houses outside Nigeria is to focus on industrialization in the country. “I am very passionate about the Nigeria dream, and apart from my Lagos house, I have another one in my home state, Kano, and a rented one in Abuja,” he said.
Dangote’s modest house in Kano was used to receive guests following the death of his brother Sani Dangote in 2021. Public affairs analyst Sani Bala praised Dangote for setting a good example, stating that Nigerians need to be re-oriented to understand that owning several mansions is not an achievement when the money could be better utilized elsewhere.
