The Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has highlighted the successes of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy introduced by his government, asserting that it has yielded significant benefits for the nation. Apexnewsgh reports

Speaking to a gathering during his campaign tour in the Upper East Region, Dr. Bawumia detailed the positive impacts of the policy on education.

“Our records in education are very impressive. For instance, the Free SHS policy has borne good fruits for the country notwithstanding the naysayers’ negative beliefs and assertions. An enrollment record of 1.4 million has been recorded under our government, a figure that is greater than any other government in the history of this country. And we will do more if I become the president,” Dr. Bawumia declared.

The Vice President emphasized that the policy has not only increased overall student enrollment but has also significantly boosted the enrollment of girls in schools. “The enrollment of girls into various schools has increased. In fact, it has made finding domestic workers in the cities very difficult,” he noted, illustrating the shift from domestic work to education for many young girls.

Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the policy’s success in the five regions of the North, where there has been a notable increase in student enrollment and improved academic performance. He pointed out that this development is part of a broader effort to enhance educational opportunities across the country, especially in historically underserved regions.

Dr. Bawumia further announced substantial investments in technical and vocational education. “Our government has invested GH¢6 billion in enrollment in Technical and Vocational institutions, with technological advancements in those institutions,” he stated.

This investment, he said, aims to equip students with practical skills and technological expertise, thereby aligning education with the demands of the modern job market.

However, Dr. Bawumia’s remarks underscore the significance of the Free SHS policy in improving access to education and promoting economic growth and development in Ghana.
