The legal saga involving former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, took a dramatic turn this week as he was released by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after spending several days in custody.
Sources close to the matter revealed that Mr. Abdul-Wahab was released on Wednesday evening, with no conditions attached. This development follows his re-arrest by EOCO at the Accra International Airport on July 4, just as he was preparing to board a flight to the United Kingdom. Investigators alleged that he had tried to access a frozen account at Republic Bank through fraudulent means before attempting to leave the country.
The airport arrest reignited a legal tussle between the Attorney-General’s Office and Mr. Abdul-Wahab’s legal team over the legitimacy of his detention. Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, indicated that the state planned to seek a review of a High Court order that had previously permitted the former NAFCO boss to travel.
Mr. Abdul-Wahab remains under investigation for alleged financial irregularities during his time at NAFCO. He and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni, were earlier charged alongside others over financial offences related to the state-owned company. However, those charges were dropped after prosecutors cited new evidence, resulting in their discharge by the court.
Despite the withdrawal of charges, EOCO re-arrested both Mr. Abdul-Wahab and his wife, a move that has sparked debate about the legal basis for their continued detention. Throughout the ordeal, Mr. Abdul-Wahab has firmly maintained his innocence, with his lawyers challenging the state’s actions at every turn.
EOCO insists its operations followed the law, while Mr. Abdul-Wahab’s lead counsel, former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, has dismissed the state’s claims, arguing that no application was filed to review the travel order before the arrest. The case continues to attract public attention as the investigation unfolds and both legal teams prepare for the next phase.
For now, Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba is a free man, but the legal and investigative proceedings surrounding his tenure at NAFCO remain far from over.
