In a strategic move to address the crippling effects of a severe dry spell on agricultural production, the Ghanaian government, led by Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has enforced a ban on the export of vital grains like maize, rice, and soybean. Apexnewsgh reports

During a press briefing held on August 26, Minister Acheampong declared the immediate implementation of the export ban to ensure food security within the country. “Effective immediately, the government is placing a halt on the export of grains such as maize, rice, and soybean until the situation stabilizes,” emphasized the Minister, underlining the critical need to maintain adequate domestic supplies of these essential crops.

The decision to restrict exports follows distressing reports indicating that 435,872 farmers have suffered substantial losses totaling an estimated GH₵3.5 billion due to the prolonged dry conditions.

The affected crops, including maize, rice, groundnut, soybean, sorghum, millet, and yam, are predominantly cultivated in the eight regions responsible for roughly 62% of the nation’s grain production. By taking decisive action, the government aims to prevent a potential food crisis by prioritizing local consumption.

In an effort to assist farmers impacted by the ban, Minister Acheampong encouraged them to seek support through the network of local agricultural offices. “Farmers with ready-for-sale stock are advised to contact our district directors, district aggregators, or the directorate of crops at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture,” he stated, assuring that these measures would help alleviate the ban’s adverse effects on farmers.

The government’s prompt response underscores its unwavering dedication to protecting the country’s food security amidst harsh environmental challenges. Through these measures, Ghana strives to navigate the current agricultural crisis and safeguard the well-being of its farming community and wider population
