Just a day after his swearing-in, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Chief of Staff to convene an emergency meeting with key players in the energy sector to address the looming power crisis, commonly referred to as “dumsor”. Apexnewsgh reports
The meeting, held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, brings together stakeholders from GRIDCo, WAPCo, VRA, GNPC, BOST, and other power generation companies to develop immediate and long-term solutions to stabilize power supply and avert nationwide outages.
According to John Abdulai Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu and former Deputy Energy Minister, extensive technical work was done the previous night, and several options have been put on the table for discussion. Jinapor expressed confidence that President Mahama will provide further instructions through the Chief of Staff after being briefed on the meeting’s outcomes.
The energy crisis stems from insufficient fuel stocks, with AKSA having only five hours of fuel left, KTPP’s reserves lasting 1.5 days, and Asogli having completely run out of fuel. Cenpower has a stock projected to last 20.9 days, but it cannot sustain national demand alone.
To address the crisis, a technical committee has been formed, comprising prominent figures such as John Abdulai Jinapor, Emmanuel Kofi Buah, and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. The committee is expected to present a detailed roadmap to the government by the close of business today.
Ghanaians await the outcomes of these high-level deliberations as the Mahama-led administration takes swift steps to resolve the crisis and prevent further disruptions to the nation’s power supply.
