Lawyer Abraham Amaliba Proposes Effective Use of Marshals to Restore Order in Parliament

Apexnewsgh

Lawyer Abraham Amaliba suggests that the recent confrontations in Ghana’s Parliament, particularly in the vetting committee, could be avoided if the marshals were used effectively to maintain order. Apexnewsgh reports

He cites the example of South Africa, where marshals are used to remove unruly members and restore peace in Parliament.

Amaliba’s concern is that in Ghana, the marshals are not being utilized as they should be, leading to disruptions and confrontations in the House. He believes that if the marshals were used to pick out and remove MPs causing mayhem, it would help maintain some level of severity and peace in Parliament.

This issue came to the forefront after a chaotic scene erupted at the Appointments Committee on January 30, 2025, with Minority and Majority Members of Parliament clashing over the vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The situation escalated into physical altercations and damage to property, prompting the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to suspend four MPs for two weeks.

Amaliba’s suggestion highlights the need for effective mechanisms to maintain order and decorum in Parliament, ensuring that MPs can engage in constructive debates and decision-making without disruptions.
