Minister-Designate for Interior Vows to Reform Ghana’s Prisons

Apexnewsgh

Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister-Designate for the Interior, has expressed deep concerns about the deplorable state of Ghana’s prisons, particularly the meager daily feeding budget allocated for inmates. Apexnewsgh reports

Speaking during his vetting before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee, Muntaka revealed that prisoners are fed on a daily budget of just GH¢1.80 (approximately $0.15), an amount he described as inhumane and grossly inadequate for proper nutrition.

Muntaka emphasized that malnutrition among inmates, coupled with overcrowded facilities, has worsened health conditions, increasing the risk of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and scabies. He stressed that prisoners are still human beings and deserve to be treated with dignity, ensuring they receive proper nutrition and healthcare.

The Minister-Designate assured the committee that raising the feeding budget would be among his top priorities, aiming to address the critical challenges facing Ghana’s prisons. Overcrowding remains a significant issue, with many prisons operating far beyond their intended capacity, worsening unsanitary conditions and the spread of diseases.

Muntaka’s concerns echo those of various organizations, including the Crime Check Foundation and Amnesty International Ghana, which have repeatedly urged the government to reform its criminal justice system to reduce incarceration and improve conditions for inmates.
