Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso Constituency, has publicly rejected an apology issued on his behalf by Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh. Apexnewsgh reports
The apology came after Dr. Afriyie’s expulsion from the chamber by Speaker Alban Bagbin due to a disagreement over the president’s appointment of two Supreme Court judges.
During the incident, Speaker Bagbin encouraged the House to consider the broader context of the Supreme Court’s full complement when the Appointments Committee presents its report. Dr. Afriyie disagreed with the Speaker’s comments, stating that it was not within Bagbin’s authority to make such statements. This led to his expulsion from the House, with Speaker Bagbin labeling his remarks as “rude” and “disrespectful.”
However, Dr. Afriyie has denied any wrongdoing and clarified that he did not authorize Mr. Annoh-Dompreh to apologize on his behalf.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM monitored by this platform, Dr. Afriyie stated, “He apologised on my behalf? Well, he doesn’t have my permission to do that… I haven’t done anything wrong, so why should I apologise? I haven’t insulted the Speaker, I haven’t disrespected him. Where’s the disrespect?”
Dr. Afriyie maintains that his comments were neither insulting nor disrespectful and did not warrant an apology. His rejection of the apology issued on his behalf highlights the ongoing tensions and disagreements within the House.
