A rapidly spreading strain of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has prompted the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to declare a public health emergency in Africa. Apexnewsgh reports

The continent has seen over 13,700 cases and 450 deaths since the beginning of the year, primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The virus, which causes lesions across the body, has spread to other African countries, including Burundi, the Central African Republic, Kenya, and Rwanda. The declaration will facilitate coordinated responses and potentially increase medical supplies and aid to affected areas.

Mpox spreads through close contact with infected individuals, including sexual contact, skin-to-skin contact, and respiratory droplets.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and lesions, which can be deadly if left untreated. There are two main strains, with the more deadly one endemic in central Africa and driving the current outbreak.

Vaccines exist, but are typically reserved for those at risk or in close contact with infected individuals. Health experts outside Africa are monitoring the situation to assess the risk of further spread.

The Africa CDC’s declaration aims to bolster responses to the outbreak, as the situation continues to evolve.
