The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns about missing voter registration kits and other issues, prompting the party to call on the Electoral Commission (EC) to urgently convene an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting. Apexnewsgh reports
This request follows the EC’s failure to hold the scheduled IPAC meeting on March 27, 2024, ahead of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections slated for December 7.
In a formal letter to the Electoral Commission, the NDC’s General Secretary, Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, highlighted the shortage of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) and the mysterious disappearance of five laptops, which are vital components of the Biometric Verification Registration kits. The NDC expressed concerns about the potential impact of these issues on the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.
The party emphasized the importance of addressing these critical developments by requesting the urgent convening of an emergency IPAC meeting to discuss and resolve these issues. According to Fiifi Kwetey, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process is crucial to safeguarding democratic principles in the country.
On the other hand, the Electoral Commission has refuted claims of theft of seven Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs), clarifying that no such incident occurred.
However, the Commission acknowledged the theft of five laptops from the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Kits during a routine servicing exercise. Deputy Chairperson Samuel Tettey explained the distinction between the BVR Kits and the Commission’s Registration Data Systems, ensuring that the former cannot manipulate election outcomes.
Mr. Tettey emphasized the importance of the BVR Kits in the voter registration process, noting that they require specific activation to function effectively.
He reassured the public about the integrity of the EC’s systems and the electoral process, highlighting the safeguards in place to maintain the credibility of elections conducted by the Commission.
