Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the former Minister of Communication and now the Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has set his sights on a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revitalizing the nation’s small-scale mining sector. Apexnewsgh reports
This ambitious plan, aligned with the vision of former President John Dramani Mahama, is designed to foster sustainable practices while creating inclusive opportunities for the nation’s youth.
During a recent five-day campaign tour across the Eastern Region, Dr. Boamah passionately presented the Youth-In-Mining Initiative, which promises to bring about transformative changes in the industry. He emphasized the pressing need to harmonize environmental protection, regulatory efficiency, and economic growth, showcasing the initiative as a catalyst for job creation and responsible mining.
At the heart of this initiative are several key components. To start, there is a focus on streamlining licensing processes. This involves strengthening and decentralizing regulatory procedures to make it easier for small-scale and artisanal miners to obtain the necessary licenses to operate legally. Dr. Boamah also discussed the rollout of advanced technology, such as geofencing, which aims to safeguard vulnerable areas like water bodies, forest reserves, and farmland from the adverse impacts of illegal mining operations.
Recognizing the challenges these miners face, the initiative promises to offer technical support through government-backed “Equipment pools” in every small-scale mining district. This initiative will ensure that miners have access to the essential tools needed to operate efficiently and safely. Furthermore, a new Small-Scale Mining Board will be established to regulate the sector, along with a revolving fund designed to provide financial support for miners.
Environmental responsibility also takes center stage in Dr. Boamah’s vision. He proposed employing young people in a national land reclamation program, which would implement a “grow, adapt, and nurture” tree policy to restore affected lands. Additionally, the initiative aims to propel local craftsmanship by enhancing goldsmithing and jewelry production through a national apprenticeship program.
As Dr. Boamah detailed these plans, he assured attendees that a future NDC government would prioritize the revival of the Great Consolidated Diamond (GCD), a move projected to generate over 1,500 job opportunities in the process.
Echoing Dr. Boamah’s sentiments, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the former National Chairman of NDC, rallied branch executives to engage in house-to-house voter mobilization, urging them to ensure maximum participation in the upcoming election. The message was clear: to support John Dramani Mahama and NDC parliamentary candidates, and to unlock the thousands of jobs the initiative promises, all while bolstering Ghana’s economy.
With the Youth-In-Mining Initiative, the NDC is not just aiming for a shift in policy; it is envisioning a future where responsible mining efforts create lasting economic benefits, environmental protection, and sustainable growth for generations to come.
