New Minister of Works, Housing, and Water Resources Urged to Revive Abandoned Saglemi Housing Project

Ghana’s newly appointed Minister of Works, Housing, and Water Resources is facing mounting pressure to revive the stalled Saglemi Housing Project. Apexnewsgh reports

The project, launched in 2012 under former President John Dramani Mahama, aimed to construct 5,000 affordable housing units in Ningo Prampram to address Ghana’s significant housing deficit.

Despite a $200 million investment in its first phase, delivering 180 blocks and over 1,500 flats, the project has remained abandoned, sparking concerns over mismanagement, financial irregularities, and government inaction. This has left thousands of prospective homeowners in limbo.

Team Saglemi Not For Sale, a group advocating for the project’s completion, has urged the minister to take immediate action to reclaim the initiative and ensure it fulfils its original purpose of providing affordable housing to Ghanaians.

The group criticized the previous administration’s decision to transfer the project’s completion to a private company, arguing that privatization contradicts the project’s affordability goal and may result in housing units being priced beyond the reach of average Ghanaian citizens.

Instead, the team urged the minister to prioritize the project’s completion under direct government control, ensuring that it remains affordable for Ghanaians. They also emphasized the need to hold individuals responsible for delays, mismanagement, and financial losses accountable.

The Saglemi Housing Project’s revival is crucial, given Ghana’s housing deficit and the project’s potential to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing to Ghanaians across various income levels. As the new minister takes office, it remains to be seen whether they will heed the calls to revive this critical project.
