The National Pension Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has embarked on an awareness campaign to educate the media, informal sector, and employers on the importance of pension contributions. Apexnewsgh reports
Speaking to selected journalists in the Bolgatanga Municipality, Mr. Alhassan Yakubu, Zonal Head of NPRA, emphasized the need to enroll the informal sector in the pension system.
According to Mr. Yakubu, the informal sector accounts for approximately 80% of the country’s workforce, yet their participation in pension schemes is alarmingly low.
To address this, NPRA aims to mobilize and educate them on the benefits of contributing to their retirement.
Mr. Yakubu expressed concern over employers’ lack of knowledge on contribution procedures, particularly regarding Tier 2 contributions. He noted that many employers are only familiar with SSNIT contributions, highlighting the need for increased awareness and education.
He reveals that, in the coming weeks, NPRA will conduct a compliance exercise, visiting institutions in the region to verify their SSNIT and Tier 2 contributions.
Employers who are not contributing will be encouraged to do so, and radio announcements will be made to inform the public and employers of the importance of pension contributions.
By engaging the media and informal sector, NPRA aims to promote a culture of pension awareness and encourage more workers to plan for their retirement.
