A dramatic turn of events unfolded in Ghana’s Parliament on Monday, July 15, 2024, as a quorum dispute led to the abrupt adjournment of proceedings. Only 24 Members of Parliament (MPs) were present, falling short of the required number for conducting official business. Apexnewsgh reports
The session began with tensions already high, as the Minority had threatened to disrupt proceedings if the Majority failed to ensure adequate attendance. Tamale Central MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed raised the issue of quorum, accusing the Majority of consistently relying on Minority members to pass government business.
The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, was scheduled to present the Ewoyaa Lithium and Bauxite agreement, but Mohammed vehemently objected, criticizing the Majority’s absenteeism. With only 24 MPs present, Speaker Alban Bagbin was forced to adjourn the sitting, stating, “Honourable members, headcount 24, the house is adjourned.”
The adjournment highlights the ongoing tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses in Parliament, with the Minority demanding greater accountability and attendance from the Majority. The incident raises questions about the ability of Parliament to conduct its business effectively and efficiently.
