UER: GFA President, Tongo-Raana commissioned FIFA Standard Artificial Turf and Technical Center, Cut Sod for Phase Two

A FIFA-sponsored standard Astroturf pitch has been commissioned in Winkongo of the Talensi District in the Upper East Region. A little over $1 million dollars project which was assessed from FIFA projects 1.0 and 2.0 was commissioned on Friday, June 23, 2023, by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt E.S Okraku, the Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu, Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area, Tongo-Raana Kolbilsong Namalteng, the Winkongo Chief and representative from the Ministry of sports Mr. Horen Kofi Quashigah, Upper East Regional Football Association Chairman Salifu Shaibu Zida and some other football people. Speaking at the commissioning of the standard Artificial Turf and Technical Center Phase One/ Sod Cutting Ceremony for Changing Rooms phase two, the GFA President said, “FA recognizes that there are a lot of talents in schools, it also recognizes the need for us to make a bold statement to our students that they can also learn and pursue their football dreams and therefore, the vision of the FA is to set up an Academies in the northern part of Ghana. The first one in the northern part of Ghana will be set up here in the Upper East”. According to him, what that means is that, the FA will scout talents in the JHS system and specifically JHS 3 that will be in the category of boys and girls who will be getting ready to go to SHS and the topmost talent from all the regions in the northern region will be brought here in BIGBOSS. “So, BIGBOSS will be their school, and they will study and learn football. We will do the same in the middle belt specifically the Ashanti region and we will also do the third one in the Great Accra region”. In the second phase, we are going to see the construction of the changing room and then, when that is done we will announce the third phase which will include the construction of the office space. GFA President stated Speaking about the benefits that await the people of the Upper East Region, the GFA President said, the Upper East has the potential to produce a lot more super talents and perhaps a lot more of Abedi Ayew Pelles if and only if we support our youth with first-class football infrastructure. “It is very true that there is a shortage of first-class football infrastructure in this part of our country. Just by way of statistics, we have seen one club qualify from Division 2 to Division 1 and what that means is that, in the Upper East Region, we have one first-Division club, in the Upper East Region, we have 24-second Division club, in the Upper East Region we have 21 third Division clubs and in the Upper East Region, we have 7 women Division 1 league clubs and most importantly, in this part of our country, we have 84 juvenile clubs”. He stated that all the football clubs he mentioned above do deserve first-class football infrastructure. Stressing that, “it is the only way as a country we can develop a lot more sports talents to represent our country at various levels of football ecosystem”. The GFA President further expressed his satisfaction, with the effort of the BIGBOSS Secondary School, which came through the effort of the Chief of Winkongo, through the effort of the paramount chief of the Talensi Traditional Area, for their role in the magnificent edifice been given out for public use and for the football community. He said, the decision to come to the Upper East was not too difficult for the hardworking executive committee of the Football Association. “Indeed, we have 16 political regions in this country, we have 10 football regions in this country and the question is why did we choose Upper East? What is so important is when we approached the Upper East, they opened their arm to welcome Ghana Football Association to bring this amazing investment to this part of our country”. “It took a hardworking staff of the Football Association led by the Secretary to work closely with FIFA governance to ensure that we take all the boxes and most importantly to ensure that FIFA would agree for this investment to take place here”. “The football pitch that we see in front of us cost Ghana Football Association a little over $1 million dollars. This money was assessed from what we call FIFA Project 1.0 and 2.0. The little over a million dollars includes all the taxes and demurrage taxes that were paid to ensure we deliver this project in quality and on time”. He said “What we are witnessing today, represents phase 1 of our project. The vision of the Football Association is to invest and continue to invest on this soil for us to establish what we call the Technical center of our Football Association”. However, the GFA President revealed that currently, the entire Football Association (FA) has only one center and it is situated in Accra in Prampram, the intention of your FA is to replicate it here on this soil. “So, for this phase of the project, we have a FIFA standard Astroturf full-size pitch, we have a standby generator that will power the light, and two goal posts the coaches will use but beyond these, we will cut the sod for the construction of changing rooms that will allow our boys and girls to change and offer themselves to their coaches to be trained”. UER: Upper East a region in love with politics than development

It appears the cry for the people of the Upper East Region to give the Bolgatanga sports stadium a facelift is not going to be given any attention any time soon. The Minister Designate for Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif has revealed, that he has no knowledge of government plans to give the abandoned Bolgatanga stadium a facelift. Bolgatanga Stadium has been one of the priorities for the people of the Upper East Region, no wonder it was part of the region agenda during the Upper East @50 celebration On November 26, 2020, it was reported on Ghana New Agency “NDC to build ultramodern sports stadium in Bolgatanga”. Mr John Dramani Mahama, the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate, assured the chiefs and people of the Upper East Region that he will build an ultramodern sports stadium in Bolgatanga to promote sports. He said the next NDC government would build regional sports stadia across every region without a stadium to promote sports and wellness. Mr Mahama made the pledge on Wednesday at a community engagement with the chiefs and people of Talensi in the Upper East Region as part of his four-day campaign tour. He noted that apart from the regional sports Stadiums, mini modern sports stadia would be built in all districts to harness the sporting potentials of the youth. He said the sports potentials of the youth would be harnessed from the district to regional, national and international levels. Mr. Mahama reiterated the need to harness the youth’s sporting potentials to create jobs for them. However, one would ask, why are people of the Upper East denying themselves developmental opportunities especially when they had the opportunity to serve as ministers of state. In the Akufo-Addo first Administration, the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central Mr. Kofi Adda had the opportunity to provide a first-class airport to the people of the Upper East Region. But unfortunately, that wasn’t achieved for the region till he says goodbye to the Aviation Ministry. That is one classic example, now let me come back to the stadia issue. On January 08, 2015, a story published by then Citifmonline.com copied by Peacefmonline.com “Bolga Stadium To Be World Class Sports Minister” This was according to another son from the region who in control of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga has said work will soon commence on the Bolgatanga sports stadium to transform it into a world-class stadium. This, according to the Minister will be achieved with the provision of standard infrastructure and facilities. Mr. Ayariga revealed this on a working visit to the Bolga sports stadium and also the Bolgatanga Senior High School (SHS) to inspect a proposed site for a regional sports academy. In an interview with Citi News after the inspection, Mr. Ayariga bemoaned the poor infrastructure of the Bolga sports stadium and also the lack of proper sports facilities in the whole of the Upper East Region. He however, said the government is working to rectify the problem saying, it’s unfortunate that we have not after all these years been able to develop the infrastructure for sports in the region. He said his Ministry is strategizing to make sure every region has good facilities for sports infrastructure. The Sports Minister indicated that this year, his outfit is looking at putting up sports facilities for a few regions. In relation to Bolgatanga, we are looking at developing the pitch and then other facilities in the Bolgatanga stadium. He promised that some technical persons will be deployed to the Upper East Region to start work on the pitches and we will see how we can develop that facility. This was according to the Citifmonline.com report way back in 2015, that promise by our own brother and son making the Bolgatanga Sports Stadium a world class didn’t come to pass. We are now in 2021. In 2017, President Akufo-Addo also announced plans by his government to rehabilitate the stadium. Yet 2021, a Minister-designate for Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif has made it clear of having no knowledge on the face lifting of Bolgatanga Stadium and is a clear signal that, is going to take a little more longer and only God knows when. “Mr. Chairman, no, I have not received briefing on the face-lifting of Bolgatanga Sports Stadium and the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex. But if I’m given the nod, all sports facilities will be paid attention to and now that you have mentioned the two facilities, I will look into it. I will do a follow-up and pay more attention to ensure that what the President said is done,” he told a members of the Appointments Committee of Parliament Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak during vetting on Thursday, February 25, 2021. What is the hope for the people of Upper East Region as far as issues of development are concerned? Ex-Ghana star Sulley Muntari ready to accept ‘reasonable salary’ and sign for Kaizer Chiefs

Ex-AC Milan and Inter star Sulley Muntari is ready to accept a reasonable salary and sign for South African giants Kaizer Chiefs. The experienced midfielder wants to return to the pitch since leaving Spanish side but the stumbling block has been his ages. He was previously linked another PSL side Maritzburg United. “Muntari is still keen to play in the PSL. He has always had a desire to play for Kaizer Chiefs,” a source is quoted by KickOff.com. ”There has been contact [with Chiefs] but nothing formal.” Kaizer Chiefs, who are serving a FIFA transfer ban, will be free to register new players in the next transfer window.
