Economic crisis: PNC’s recommendations to gov’t

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has submitted a proposal on how to mitigate the effects of the current economic crisis on Ghanaians. According to the party, these proposals will help the government in finding solutions to the challenges facing the economy. The proposals come on the back of President Akufo-Addo’s national address last week, in which he conceded that the country is in a crisis. The PNC, in a statement, noted that it agrees that the economy is in recession, hence, the proposal to the government in finding solutions to the challenges. The proposals are as follows: 1. The general increases in prices of goods and services, are obviously being driven by the unprecedented increases in petroleum prices exacerbated by the free fall of the Ghana Cedi. We commend the government’s initiative to import cheap petroleum products as a short-term measure to stabilise prices. Again we recommend that government should take charge of the importation and pricing of petroleum products to ensure prices are affordable for the ordinary Ghanaian. Government should not pay attention to the few individuals trying to thwart its efforts by saying it is impossible. Meanwhile, the government must hasten the operationalisation of the Tema Oil Refinery and other refineries under construction to help permanently bring fuel prices under control. 2. PNC welcomes the decision by the government to reduce the importation of certain foods and beverages into the country. This is not going to be easy however, more proactive measures must be taken in planning to wean us off the importation of products we can produce locally. 3. We recommend that government should regulate and be part of the importation of rice and other essential products into the country. The government through the Buffer Stock Company must buy the local rice from producers and equally be in control of the amount of rice imported into the country. Government guaranteeing market for local rice producers will encourage local rice farmers to scale their production thereby leading to self-reliance in the production of rice. This should be replicated in the production of other foodstuffs. 4. Again, the total reliance on the private sector, in these hard times, to be the sole importer of essential commodities, has not been helpful, as businesses are taking advantage of the situation by selling essential commodities at exorbitant prices. Government must take steps to control the importation of certain essential commodities into the country to ensure affordable prices of such commodities. 5. We recommend to the government as a matter of urgency to revamp the operations of the Metro Mass Transport (MMT) and other Public Transport Agencies within three months to minimise the rising cost of transportation, especially within the cities and to offer free rides to schoolgoing children and the elderly. Mini-buses should be added to their fleet of vehicles to augment the already existing ‘trotro’ and help serve as a check on their charges. 6. We recommend to the government to clamp down on the pricing of items in dollars. We would like the government to enforce the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723) which prohibits pricing, advertising and receipt or payment for goods and services in foreign currency in Ghana. The sole legal tender in Ghana is the Ghana Cedi (GHC) and Ghana Pesewa (Gp) and anyone who will violate this act be it hotels, companies, institutions or individuals should be severely punished to serve as a deterrent. 7. The call for the government to cut down on its appointees is justifiable. The government’s move to continue the reduction of its appointee’s salary by 30% was commendable but it is not being seen to be a great sacrifice as such, we recommend that the government cut down the number of appointees and put the remaining ones on full salary for them to be well motivated to meet performance expectations. This singular act will bring back the credibility and trust the government need from Ghanaians. The party called on Ghanaians to remain resolute and optimistic about getting out of these difficult times. “Let us all, and as individuals conduct our businesses in a way that should not cause fear and panic, which will further ruin us all,” the statement added. — Classfmonline.com—

Some opposition party Youth organizers accept the use of Ghana Card for registration

Some Party Youth Organizers who called themselves as Coalition of National Youth Organizers, which includes the National Youth Organizers of the PPP, GCPP, CPP, APC and the PNC has permitted the Electoral Commission (EC) decision to use Ghana Card as a form of identification for the upcoming registration of eligible voters. Statement from the Coalition said: “We the Coalition of National Youth Organizers support the Electoral commission’s decision to accept the Ghana card in that exercise,” The EC has earlier hinted plans to accept the Ghana Card as proof of citizenship when it embarks on the limited registration of eligible voters who have attained the age of 18 and those who were unable to vote during the 2021 registration exercise. The Coalition noted that: “there has not been much debate on the issue of age or the Sanity of registrants over the years, however, the problem has always been the status of the person’s citizenship. “From our checks, over the years, the majority of the challenges that has characterised the electoral registration process by the electoral commission have been to question the citizenship status of the challenged person.” It further noted that: “This has led to the beefing up of our borders with extra Ghanaian security forces every time the electoral commission decides to embark on electoral registration for the fear of non-Ghanaian citizens coming into our country to register as voters. The reason being that, although article 6, to article 10 clearly states who a Ghanaian is, the Ghanaian does not have a valid and acceptable National Identification or document to prove their claim of citizenship. “This has always led to confrontations, tensions and sometimes violence at the registration centers because of the suspicion that foreigners are being registered. This, the credibility of Ghana’s voters register has always been doubted depending on who is in power under the 4th Republic between the NPP and the NDC since 1995.” The coalition indicated that: “We have witnessed countless D-day election violence and post-election violence in Ghana since the beginning of the 4th Republic which is a dent on our image as a democratic country, and most of the cause of the violence has always been the suspicion of non-residents or non-citizens attempting to vote or having voted already.” It continued that it has “taken this position because we believe in our democracy and hope that the post elections litigations and violence that characterise our electoral processes can end when we all resolved that every election conducted in Ghana and the results declared are indeed the will and the decision of Ghanaians. “In that regard, let us be mindful that the electoral commission of Ghana is a strong Pillar if not the last barricade which is safeguarding the democratic path we have chosen as our system of government.” The Coalition also called on politicians, “especially the NPP and the NDC” to “stop interfering in” the work of the EC and stop trying to “wear them our political colours, like we did with Dr Afari Gyan, Madam Charlotte Osei and Now Madam Jean Mensah.” Apexnewsgh.com

PNC congratulates Speaker of Parliament, tasked Judges to emulates from….

The opposition People’s National Convention (PNC) has extended their calls to Ghanaian judges and lawyers to emulate from the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s wardrobe change and also come up with a traditional made in Ghana uniform different from their current one. The party congratulating Mr Bagbin’s decision to ditch the colonial Speaker’s cloak for a traditional African wear also encouraged members of parliament and all institutions of state to emulate “this fine showing of our culture”. Below is the full PNC statement: GREAT MOVE SPEAKER, The PNC commends the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament for that show of our rich culture. The Speaker was looking too handsome in his regalia and that is a clear representation of the Ghanaian culture other than the usual gown. He is certainly adding to the numerous call, especially by the first gentleman of the land- President Nana Akuffo Addo, that public sector workers can be in African prints. Also President Kuffour in 2006 directed all public institutions to wear local textiles on Fridays to help boost the local industries who are into textiles production. It will also help us as a country to appreciate and patronise our own products and to live as Africans. Not only should members of parliament emulate this fine showing of our culture but this should be emulated by all institutions of state. We only need to add a cultural touch to what we inherited from the Europeans. Our courts could adopt a dress code that will still ensure discipline and at the same time showcase our rich tradition. On the 7th of January 2021, our Supreme court judges wore torn and faded uniform to the inauguration ceremony of President Nana Akufo-Addo and the PNC wondered whether it was due to lack of funds to purchase materials to sew new uniform or they were popping up with the status quo of our colonial masters. Prof. Kofi Awoonor mocked educated Ghanaians in his poem ‘We have found a new land’. It was about Africans imitating the dressing of their colonial masters and abandoning their own. The judges and lawyers can also come up with a uniform different from their current one that should have a local touch, and that will be admirable. The PNC is of the believe that our economic condition and our ways of life would be improved the moment we decide to patronise our own products and live as Ghanaians and as Africans. Aside this monumental strides by the speaker, the Party wishes to indulge him to put his feet on the ground by remaining objective and neutral to ensure a healthy debate in the house. His ability to manage the house in the wake of E-levy shall be a test of his ability to remain a good a Speaker who will lead the house to strengthen our democratic credentials. Sack Roads Minister over ‘demonstrations don’t build roads’ comment – Prez Nana Addo told

Former People’s National Convention (PNC) flagbearer hopeful, Sampson Asaki Awingobet, has lashed out at the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta over comments ridiculing citizens who embark on demonstrations for good roads. According to him, Ghanaians should not take exception to the statement, and regards what the minister said as a blow below the belt and disrespectful to the citizenry. The Minister called the bluff of such protesters arguing demonstrations do not fix or build roads. According to the minister, he is appalled by educated people who embark on such exercises. “It is unreasonable for anybody to say that all roads everywhere should be fixed simultaneously. So these demonstrations should stop. Sometimes you get people who are supposed to know better, well-educated people who should advise their colleagues joining demonstrations. Demonstrations don’t build roads,” he told the media when inspecting the 31.7km Kwafokrom to Apedwa road in the Eastern Region which forms part of the Accra-Kumasi dualization project.” Reacting to the Minister’s statement in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, the visibly angry politician stated, “It is cheap talk for the Minister to say roads cannot be constructed simultaneously and I strongly believe Ghanaians need to take exception to that. Our roads are bad and we go to the workshop all the time. As a Roads Minister, an interaction with the media is the right opportunity for you to appeal to the conscience of Ghanaians and let them understand that the government is trying to fix the country’s roads. His statement was rather unfortunate and is not expected from a Minister of his caliber. If I were the President of Ghana, he would’ve vacated his post. I believe the President must see to it that he relinquishes his position because his statement made no sense.” With countless live being lost to poor roads in the country, Sampson Asaki Awingobet asked, “why shouldn’t we demonstrate for good roads? He should be fired over such loose talk. Ghanaians are mad and you have the audacity to say such things when you’re being paid by the tax payer. This is disgusting,” he reiterated. —happyghana Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Contact: 05555568093

PNC cracks widen as 2020 flagbearer sues nearly all NEC members

The internal wrangling of the opposition People’s National Convention (PNC) is heading to the Accra High Court as the party’s 2020 Presidential Candidate, David Apasera, and National Chairman Moses Danibaah have sued 18 party executives. According to the writ filed on Thursday, September 9, the plaintiffs are seeking an order, among others, to restrain Janet Asana Nabla, the General Secretary, and Bala Maikankan, the Greater Accra Region chairman, from stepping feet at the party’s headquarters. They have also joined in the suit some regional chairpersons and secretaries as well as a founding member of the party, Comrade Aremyawu Ali. On Thursday, the embattled General Secretary was locked out of her office and she reported the matter at the Kotobabi Police Station. She accused the Leader of the PNC of employing thugs from his hometown, Frafra, to intimidate party executives he disagrees with. Ms Nabla also threatened revenge if the police do not intervene. “Let the security people be quiet. Let the politicians be quiet. You are dealing with a potential coup plotter who is capable of causing coup and mayhem in this country and everyone is keeping quiet,” she told journalists in Accra. “You continue to keep quiet. “Me, I will come out because wherever he is passing, whatever measures he is going to use, I will use same measures. “Today, I am at the police station, I am doing the right thing to follow the processes. If the police are not ready to help me, I will take matters into my own hands. “Those small, small boys that he has, I have boys from Walewale who are well-built, macho. They are terrorists and they can terrorise this country and you will run into your rooms and won’t come out. “I am giving peace a chance for the police and our security forces to stop being partisan and be impartial because at times you send your case to the police station and because money has exchanged hands, they won’t give you justice.” But the writ by Mr Apasera and Danibaah seeks an order to restrain Ms Nabla from holding herself out as the General Secretary of the party. At a purported meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC), the plaintiffs were also removed from having anything to do with the party and Mr Maikankan was appointed interim chairman. But the writ also wants a restraining order on him from holding himself as Acting National Chairman. 3news Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. PNC boils as Gen. Sec. claims flag bearer diverted 10 motorbikes, one pickup

The General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Janet Nabla, has accused the party’s 2020 flag bearer, Mr David Apasera, of diverting 10 motorbikes and a pickup truck donated to the party by some sympathisers, to his family and friends. According to Ms Nabla, the flag bearer did not disclose the donation and he was questioned about it recently at a National Executive Committee meeting. She also alleged in an interview that the pickup has been hijacked by the flag bearer. Additionally, Ms Nabla claimed that the flag bearer once said he could not work with her as General Secretary because she was a woman. In response, however, Mr Apasera denied the claims. “There’s no single soul who has benefitted from a motorbike and he’s a member of my family”, Mr Apasera said. According to him, one of the bikes was given to the driver of the party’s chairman because he stayed “very far away” and was also a staunch party member. “Some were also given to some regions” while others “were given to parliamentary candidates”. “So, I think if you get the Organiser, [he’ll give you the details] because these were done by the Organiser not me. Because she is in trouble, she thinks that she should destroy everybody”, Mr Apasera said. She also described as a “lie”, Ms Nabla’s claim that he once said he could not work with a woman as General Secretary. Electoral Materials Arrives Upper Region As Agents Of Political Parties Battle For Safety Location

Confusion erupted between political party agents in the Upper East Regional capital Bolgatanga on Friday, November 2020, upon the arrival of electoral materials for the December 7 elections. The misunderstanding came as a result of where to keep the electoral materials for safety ahead of the December 7 elections. But unfortunately, the party agents, especially agents of the two main political parties NDC / NPP and the Police all share different views on where the electoral materials will be kept for safety. Sadly, shortly after the electoral materials were brought into the Regional at the Regional Police Headquarters, party representatives of the various political parties were seen uncomfortable as they started registering displeasure following where the electoral material will be kept for safety ahead of the Parliamentary and Presidential December elections. Meanwhile earlier on, the police proposed a certain location but unfortunately, the opposition NDC were not in agreement as they rejected the proposal insisting that the electoral material should be kept at the usual place inside a room by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) building for sleeping dogs to lie, and that proposal by the opposition NDC was accepted by all the stakeholders. However, after the agreement by all stakeholders, they all examined the electoral materials which enable them to take a record of the serial numbers printed on the ballot papers Some election observers from the European Union (EU) were present to witness the event. Ghana can’t have peaceful elections when citizens are not committed to peace – EC

The Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), says Ghana cannot have peaceful elections when citizens’ actions and inactions do not show their commitment to ensuring peace. According to Mr George Kwame Amoah, it is essential that Ghanaians are tolerant of each other and respect the choice of others in elections. “This will help us prevent attacks, insults, and intimidation among others, which are creeping into the country’s politics,” he said during the launch of Agents of Peace Campaign. His comments come after some NPP and NDC members attacked each other after a peace walk at Odododiodio in Accra. Mr Amoah speaking during the launch by the Church of Pentecost Kaneshie Area, on the theme: “Seek Peace and Pursue It” described the violence as “horrible”. He stated it was proper to allow political parties to have the freedom to a campaign since Ghana chose the path of democracy. People should have the opportunity to freely choose candidates or parties they were comfortable with, he added. Mr Amoah said, “peace is invaluable, don’t take it for granted. Countries who lost peace took many years to get it back. We need to pursue peace even after elections.” Ghana cannot afford to lose the peace her citizens are enjoying, he noted. The members of the church present also took the opportunity to pray for the upcoming elections, political parties and security agencies among others. The launch was characterised by patriotic songs, poetry recitals, and a documentary on some incidences of electoral violence and their effects. The campaign is expected to be replicated in 87 local assemblies within the Church’s 22 districts. Mr Amoah commended the Church for the campaign and appealed to the conscience of the people on the need to sustain the peace. The Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mrs Elizabeth Sackey, urged all to “walk the talk of peace” and desist from paying lip service to it. The Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, Mrs. Lucille Hewlett Annan, noted that it would be difficult for people to enjoy their rights if there was no peace. She appealed to citizens to resort to arbitration, litigation, mediation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms instead of war to address their grievances. The Kaneshie Area Head of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Mike Etrue, appealed to the youth to avoid being used as instruments of violence. “The youth should not build their muscles in violence but must build faith muscle for peace,” he said. He appealed to political leaders to seek peace because that remained paramount in Ghana’s democracy and development. Bernard Mornah Chairmanship slot defeat is a blessing for Ghana- Dr. John Osei Bobbie

A political Scientist Dr. John Osei Bobbie has described the defeat of Bernard Mornah as National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) as a blessing to Ghana democracy. Speaking on the A1 radio Daybreak Upper East program on Thursday, October 1, 2020, monitored by Apexnewsgh.com the political Scientist was very emphatic with his response on PNC Congress results outcome with took place yesterday. According, to Dr. Bobbie, the defeated PNC Bernard Mornah has no good intentions for the growth and sustainability of PNC. “Unfortunately, Bernard Mornah was not building PNC, I think he was more or less working for the NDC and not building PNC as a party. He has that charisma and I thought, he would use the charisma to push PNC forward, and unfortunately, he was always doing the biding of NDC, as a third party, you should appreciate where you need to give appreciation and condemned where condemnation is deserved. But in a situation, you decide to follow only one line and even you will not come down to the region to help mobilize the party to move the party forward to enable Ghana politics to have a strong third force, then you are not doing all of us any good. He losing the PNC Chairmanship slot is a step in the right direction, is a blessing for Ghana, and a blessing for the PNC.” Responding to the criticism of some elements of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) which suggest that the governing New Patriotic Party has hands in Bernard Mornah defeat, Dr. Bobbie said such criticisms cannot be entirely factual because the same people wouldn’t have come to say same if Bernard Mornah had won.
