Talensi: Non-availability of lab facility in Baare a heavy threat to pregnant women in the area-Chief cries for help
Baare’s Chief, Naab Nyaakora Mantii, has expressed discontentment with what he views as an unjust treatment of pregnant women in Baare. Apexnewsgh.com report In an interview with Apexnewsgh, Naab Nyaakora Mantii raised concerns about a situation where approximately 55 acres of land were allocated to the government for the construction of a district hospital. Despite this development, he highlighted an issue regarding the welfare of pregnant women in Baare. He pointed out that although Baare already has a maternity block, a theater, and a theater ward, pregnant women from Baare still have to travel to the health center in Tongo to obtain their medical records and undergo laboratory tests. Naab Nyaakora Mantii further elaborated on the challenges faced by pregnant women due to the significant distance they must traverse, referring to it as a burdensome punishment for the local community. When a pregnant woman goes into labor, they are required to embark on a considerable journey from Baare to Tongo to retrieve their medical records and subsequently return to Baare. This inconvenience becomes even more apparent when considering that not all individuals have access to transportation. Consequently, pregnant women who lack mobility are compelled to make round trips for their laboratory tests, collecting the results, and bringing them back to Baare. Recognizing this predicament, Naab Nyaakora Mantii strongly recommended that the authorities address and resolve this issue promptly, as it poses a significant challenge for the community. Naab Nyaakora Mantii highlighted the significant efforts he had undertaken in response to the challenge. He had previously approached the Talensi district health director with regards to the issue, who acknowledged that there was a lack of infrastructure in Baare. However, the director assured that if appropriate structures were in place, they could rectify the situation and ensure that the health cards of Baare women were accessible at the healthcare facility. Emphasizing the urgent need to address the distressing conditions faced by the pregnant women in his community, Naab Nyaakora Mantii requested assistance in improving the infrastructure in the area. He believed that providing the necessary infrastructure would be a crucial step towards resolving the current predicament. UER Dialysis Project: I have not received any letter and am not aware individuals are contributing—Dr. Nawaane
Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nabdam Constituency, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has responded to the controversial question asked by the Presidential Flag bearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong regarding the contribution of the Upper East Members of Parliament to the ongoing dialysis project at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. Apexnewsgh report When an appeal was made through A1 radio to Mr. Kennedy Agyapong to donate to the ongoing dialysis project at Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. He responded by expressing his willingness to contribute but mentioned the need to assess his available resources. He explained that he is currently building a dialysis center and cardio center worth six million dollars ($6 million) at the 37 Military Hospital, along with training doctors. He had sent them to India for training, insisting that the delay in the project was due to his campaign commitments. Mr. Agyapong further challenged Members of Parliament from the Upper East Region by questioning how much they have contributed since the launch of the dialysis project. Meanwhile, responding to the NPP Presidential hopeful, Dr. Nawaane said, he has not received any letter in line with the dialysis project and also has no knowledge about ongoing individual contributions. According to him, Mr. Agyapong should have concentrated on his campaign message to his delegates and left MPs in the region alone. According to Dr. Nawaane, the issue initially was even where to place the dialysis machine, of which the NDC government has a building at the hospital that was about 85 percent completed using the Saudi fund. Stressing that, it has taken the government of the NPP 5 to 6 years for them to let that building to be completed. It is now that the space has come for them to actually get where to locate that dialysis unit. Dr. Nawaane further mentioned that the MPs from the Upper East Region depend a lot on their common fund which is very scanty for them to use establish a dialysis machine. “He is a Member of Parliament and the resources MPs have is not….if you asked to contribute as individuals, well, that one i can’t speak for anybody but I have not received any letter to that effect and I don’t even know that individuals are contributing to anything. All I know is that there is a private initiative trying to provide dialysis in the Upper East Region”. “I don’t have any letter; I don’t know the ownership structure of the dialysis. Remember, for example, Korlu-bu has a dialysis unit but even the funds to operate it, is a problem. So, they are currently not operating outpatient department clients, only the inpatients are being taken care of.” Meanwhile, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, spoke in an exclusively interview with an award winning journalist Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com on Thursday October 19, 2023. However, concrete information gathered by this platform has it that, Dr. Emmanuel Akatibo the Doctor who happens to be the brain behind the dialysis project in the region, has already sent a written proposal to most of the MPs including the leadership of the Upper East Caucus in Parliament for their support. Reopen renal unit at Korle-Bu immediately– Minority demands
The Minority caucus of the Health Committee in Parliament is calling for the immediate reopening of the renal unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for outpatients. Currently, the facility, which provides dialysis treatment to kidney patients, has been closed to such patients for over five months due to a lack of funds. The unit faced criticism for unilaterally increasing the cost of dialysis by 100 percent. Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu has stated that the government is considering subsidizing dialysis. However, following a private meeting with the head of the Renal Unit of Korle Bu, Ranking Member for the health committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, expressed his concerns to the media, stating that it is unacceptable for the unit to remain closed due to a lack of funds. The MP for Juaboso urged the government to immediately allocate funds to the facility, as the lives of many patients are at risk due to this closure. “With the dialysis issues at Korle-Bu we think the government is being wicked. The government is being unconscionable and insensitive at this point in time. “If you recall when the increment came, we tried to meet management, they assured us that yes, they didn’t pass through the due process and therefore it was retracted. We also demanded that the refund be made and they assured that those who have paid on the next visit they will pay the difference,” Mr. Akandoh stated. He expressed his determination to advocate for the reopening of the renal unit at Korle-Bu Hospital, going beyond just conveying his concerns to the Minister of Health. He revealed that he had personally met with the Minister to emphasize the importance of taking any necessary measures to ensure the unit’s reopening. The lawmaker further explained that the Minister had given assurances of promptly allowing the renal unit to serve the Outpatient Department (OPD). Regrettably, the renal unit has remained closed to OPD patients for the past four to five months, which is a matter of great concern. Urgency is of the essence, and the lawmaker insisted that all possible means, including government subsidies, available resources such as funds from covid levies and misused covid-related funds, and the National Health Insurance, should be utilized to address this emergency situation. UER: Kennedy Agyapong shame MPs for not making a single contribution to the Bolga Reg Hospital dialysis project
The aspirant for the Flagbearer position in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which currently governs, has expressed concerns regarding the involvement of 14 National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs and 1 NPP MP in the dialysis project’s progress in the region. Regrettably, none of the MPs from the region have contributed to the dialysis project, despite multiple attempts to communicate with them individually and provide them with the necessary information. On March 2, 2023, residents of the Upper East Region demonstrated their generosity by actively participating in a fundraising event dedicated to the aforementioned dialysis initiative at the regional hospital. Surprisingly, the 14 NDC Members of Parliament and the 1 NPP representative did not contribute or show any involvement in the event. Stephen Yakubu, the Upper East Regional Minister, described the launch of the initiative as a significant milestone for the Regional Hospital. He emphasized that the establishment of a 24-hour state-of-the-art Hemodialysis facility would greatly enhance healthcare services for clients in the region, marking a new chapter in the hospital’s history. He described the situation as an immense challenge and an equally significant opportunity for the stakeholders of the region. The speaker emphasized that it was crucial for them to cease being victims of circumstances and take action. The provision of Hemodialysis services to individuals with renal conditions had become more prevalent than ever before, opening up an opportunity for the region’s stakeholders to address this pressing issue. The speaker expressed their discontent with the current state of affairs, deeming it unacceptable that residents of modern Ghana still had to travel to Tamale Teaching Hospital and other tertiary health facilities outside the region to receive dialysis treatment. They described this situation as highly intolerable, unnecessary, and unfair. The regional Minister, acting on behalf of REGSEC and MMDCs in the region, vowed to contribute GHC 80,000 towards resolving the issue. Furthermore, an appeal was made through A1 radio to Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, a hopeful NPP flagbearer, to donate to the ongoing dialysis project at Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. In response, Mr. Agyapong expressed his willingness to contribute but mentioned the need to assess his available resources. He explained that he was currently building a dialysis center and cardio center worth six million dollars ($6 million) at the 37 Military Hospital, along with training doctors. He had sent them to India for training, and the delay in the project was due to his campaign commitments. “I won’t say no to you, anything that will help develop Ghana why not. So, let me come back later, I have done that for Okomfo Anokye hospital why not Bolgatanga? T don’t have a problem with that. So, now that you put it before me, I will go back and you will hear from me”. He further challenged Members of Parliament in from the Upper East Region by questioning how many of them have contributed since after the launch of the dialysis project “But surprisingly, I want you to telll me, how many of your politicians have contributed to that effect”? He asked Unfortunately, none of the MPs in the region has shown any interest of making a contribution to such a lifesaving project even after approaching them individually. Bolgatanga: Insufficient number of refuse trucks hampering good sanitation
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Bolgatanga Rex Asanga, has expressed his concern about the insufficient number of refuse trucks available for the Bolgatanga Municipal assembly. Apexnenwsgh report Over a period of time, sanitation in the Municipality has become a serious issue, prompting Mr. Asanga to establish two sanitation-related policies: ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage‘and a monthly clean-up exercise. Mr. Asanga acknowledged in an exclusive interview with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh that the Municipality’s population is high, and as a result, they have not yet developed the capacity to keep up with the increasing rate of solid waste. ZoomlionGh is a major actor and I think have about 20 to 21 spots where containers ought to be for them to be lifting and the assembly has about 14-16 spots where containers are supposed to be”. However, Mr. Asanga, also revealed that so far, the Assembly don’t have containers for various spots where we are supposed to be lifting and so, this simply means that there are some spots which is supposed to have containers but not having containers. But I want to believe things have expanded, in such areas we ought to have more containers. “The problem is that the containers cost a lot of money. The last time we procured some, I think they sold it to us for almost Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc 50,000.00)” The MCE however praised ZoomlionGh for their efforts as he encourages them to do more of the lifting of refuse waste within the Municipality. ‘’I think ZoomlionGh are doing their best, but I think they should be lifting more because the rate of lifting also helps. If you are doing it every 2 days or 3 days, is better than doing it ones in a week. We have been on them to increase the regularity’’. Mr. Asanga acknowledged that issues of sanitation caused them more money as an assembly. “That is where most of our money is going, we have an agreement with one of the fuel stations and the refuse trucks are free to go in there and fill their truck tanks all is to make sure they carry the refuse waste”. “We need more refuse trucks. Currently we have only two, one for the hard waste and one for the liquid waste. So, this our challenge, we have limited number of trucks that transport the refuse waste. Prioritise mental health as a universal human right–Mental Health Alliance
As Ghana joins in the global commemoration of the 2023 World Mental Health Day under the theme “Mental health is a universal human right,” the Alliance for Mental Health and Development (Mental Health Alliance) calls on Government and all other stakeholders to recognise mental health as a human right. Mental health is essential to the overall wellbeing and ability of a person to live a fulfilling life, yet this fundamental human right eludes many. The United Nations (UN) Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the 1992 Constitution of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and the Mental Health Act 2012 Act 846 guarantee the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, devoid of discrimination and exclusion. Despite these guarantees, many people worldwide still lack access to the necessary mental health care. In Ghana, only 1 out of every 10 people in need of mental health care actually receive professional treatment for their conditions. Unemployment rates among those with mental health conditions remain unacceptably high. People with mental health conditions continue to face exclusion from decision-making processes, endure economic hardship, experience stigma and discrimination, have their personal freedoms denied, and suffer from physical abuse. Six (6) out of every 10 of women living at the alleged witches’ camps suffer some level of depression and often subjected to violent physical abuse including murder. The Mental Health Alliance is glad that finally, the Mental Health Review Tribunal and Regional Visiting Committees have been established as required by law, indicating that our calls have been heeded to. The Parliament of Ghana also passed the Amended Criminal and Offences Bill 2022 to prohibit witchcraft accusation in Ghana. A lot remain to be done since the Mental Health Review Tribunal is only functional in three regions, while the Regional Visiting Committees have been operationalised in only 5 regions, The Amended Criminal and Offences Bill 2022 is yet to receive Presidential assent. On the occasion of this year’s World Mental Health Day celebration, the Mental Health Alliance calls on the Government to address the following as matter of priority: Ensure that the Mental Health Review Tribunal is fully operational and that Regional Visiting Committees are established in all 16 regions of Ghana, rather than the existing 5 regions. Resource the Mental Health Review Tribunal and Regional Visiting Committees to enable them to protect the mental health of Ghanaians as a human right. Include mental health in the NHIS benefit package and go beyond the rhetoric. Promote mental health in the Universal Health Coverage strategy of Ghana. Furthermore, the Mental Health Alliance calls on The President to assent the Amended Criminal Offences Bill 2022. In observance of this year’s World Mental Health Day, the Mental Health Alliance extends its warmest wishes to all Ghanaians and encourages everyone to prioritise their mental well-being. Do not hesitate to seek early treatment for your mental health when needed! Source: Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana For publication please kindly contact us on 0256336062 or Email apexnewsgh@gmail.com
Talensi: A Vulnerable family appeals for Ghc 4000.00 to conduct suffering son’s anus surgery
The family Ayamba in WInkongo Labisi of the Talensi District in the Upper East Region is soliciting for funds from general public to help conduct a surgery on their son Ayinanga Ayamba who was born without an open anus. Apexnewsgh.com report In medical terms, when a child is born without an opening in the rectum, it is known as an imperforate anus. Imperforate anus, also known as anal atresia, is a congenital condition in which the opening of the anus is blocked or absent. The severity of the condition can vary, with some cases being less severe and others being more complex. The danger associated with imperforate anus depends on the specific circumstances and the level of involvement of other nearby structures. In some cases, the condition can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. If there is a complete absence of an opening, it can lead to an accumulation of stool and gas in the intestines, which can cause serious complications such as intestinal obstruction and perforation. In less severe cases, where there is a small opening but it is still not functioning properly, the child may experience difficulties with bowel movements, constipation, and other gastrointestinal issues. These can affect the child’s quality of life and lead to chronic problems if not addressed. Fortunately, imperforate anus can often be successfully treated through surgery. Here are a few major concerns associated with imperforate anus. A. Bowel obstruction: Imperforate anus can cause partial or complete blockage of the lower digestive tract, leading to difficulty passing stool. This can result in distension of the abdomen, discomfort, and sometimes vomiting. B. Infection: The absence or obstruction of the anus can increase the risk of infection in the area. Careful hygiene and prompt treatment of any signs of infection are crucial to prevent complications. C. Abnormal bowel function: Children with imperforate anus may experience difficulties with bowel control and bowel movements. This can lead to issues like constipation, soiling, or fecal incontinence. Regular follow-up with a healthcare professional can help address these concerns. However, our visit to the family little Ayinanga Ayamba a boy born in May 2022 indicates that the little innocent boy is passing through pain each time he wants to pass stool. The mother, a woman who is more like a single mother cried for help. According to her, despite witnessing the son go through pains each blessed day, she is also challenged with funds to continue providing packs of pampers each day since that it is what is needed to cover her son’s stomach surgery to avoid infections. Madam Sampoa is appealing to the general public especially the people of Talensi a gold rich community to come to their aide. According to her, they need only Four Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc 4000.00) to conduct an open anus for her innocent Child. Please, it worth saving this innocent boy’s life. Open Defecation: Teachers and pupils of 31st December KG risks their lives on snake bite daily
The teachers and students at the 31st December Kindergarten School in the Tindonsobligo Community of Bolgatanga Municipal, located in the Upper East Region, are facing a daily risk of snake bites due to the absence of a constructed toilet facility within the school premises. This unfortunate situation has resulted in teachers and students resorting to “open defecation” as there are no other options available. Despite being established in 1990, the school has been operating without a toilet facility up until now. The lack of toilet facilities in schools can have various negative effects on the teaching and learning abilities of pupils. Here are a few potential impacts: Health and hygiene: Inadequate or non-existent toilet facilities can compromise the health and hygiene of both students and teachers. This can lead to increased absenteeism due to illness, making it difficult for students to consistently attend classes and progress in their learning. When there are no proper toilets available, students may feel uncomfortable and distracted throughout the day. This can affect their concentration, making it harder for them to fully engage in lessons and absorb information. Lack of access to clean and well-maintained toilets can demotivate students, causing them to lose focus on their studies. They may feel embarrassed or uneasy, leading to decreased motivation to participate actively in classroom activities and moreover, prolonged discomfort and disruption caused by inadequate toilet facilities can hinder students’. The headmistress of the school Madam Gornah Magrate, in a conversation with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen, a member of the Upper East Regional Branch leadership of the Media Coalition against Open Defecation (M-CODe), expressed her concern over a troubling situation. According to her, the teachers and students do not want to resort to open defecation, commonly known as free range, whenever they need to use the restroom. She shared an incident where a community member approached the school, warning them to instruct the students against defecating near his shrine. She is appealing to NGOs and other relevant institutions to come to their aid by providing them with a toilet and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facility to reduce the risk of children being bitten by snakes. The Assembly member for the Tindonsobligo electoral area, Thomas Ayimbila Apaala, acknowledged the situation as unfortunate when contacted by Apexnewsgh.com. He stated that he has made numerous efforts by writing various institutions, including the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST). Hon. Ayinbila also expressed dissatisfaction that no major renovations have taken place since the establishment of the school. However, when contacted the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Rex Asanga, he expressed sympathy for the school predicament. He has assured that his Assembly officials will be sent to the school to find a solution. “I will ask my people to go and have a look at it, we will see if there is something temporal, we can do”. He told Apexnewsgh.com Sadly, in the Upper East Region, 26% of public schools in Ghana operate without toilet facilities Source: Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications.
