Is It a crime to be born a woman? Scrap the 20% Luxury Tax on sanitary products—SAMMO to Govt

As the World marks international menstrual hygiene day,Safe Menstruation Movement (SAMMO) a non-governmental and non-profitable Organization based in the Upper East Region of Ghana whose members comprise of young voluntary men and women whose aim is to support young girls with sanitary products to ensure safe and hygienic menstruation period, and to also provide education to school going girls on menstrual hygiene among other things has joined the whole world to commemorate the day. Meanwhile, as part of mandate and agenda, SAMMO wants to find out from the government of the republic of Ghana, if it is a crime to be born a woman? Or Women intentionally created a menstruation period for themselves? We at SAMMO believe menstruation is a natural phenomenon and it is not for nothing God made women to experience it every month in their life. “Why would the government place a 20% Luxury Tax on sanitary products making our vulnerable girls find it difficult to buy? These are the questions we at SAMMO on this day join women and all well-meaning Ghanaians across the nation to seek answers from our authorities, whom we believe have all the power to scrap this unacceptable tax in order for women to also have hygienic menstruation periods without stress”. SAFE MENSTRUATION MOVEMENT (SAMMO) PRESS RELEASE IN COMMEMORATION OF 2023 INTERNATIONAL MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY. Safe Menstruation Movement (SAMMO) is a non-governmental and non-profitable Organization based in the Upper East Region of Ghana whose members comprise of young voluntary men and women whose aim is to support young girls with sanitary products to ensure safe and hygienic menstruation period, and to also provide education to school going girls on menstrual hygiene among other things. On this special day of international menstrual hygiene day, SAMMO joins the whole world to commemorate the day with sadness following the difficulties women and young girls go through just to have a pack of sanitary pad to ensure safe and hygienic condition during menstruation due to the high cost involved. International Menstrual Hygiene Day falls on 28th May every year, which is a global advocacy platform used to promote good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) practices and raise awareness of the challenges women and girls face during menstruation. Menstrual hygiene day is an occasion for publicizing information in the media; including social media, Public Information Campaign which can help engage decision makers in policy dialogue. The day also provides an opportunity to actively advocate for integration of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) into global, national and local policies and programs. In light of this, SAMMO wants to find out from the government of the republic of Ghana, if it is a crime to be born a woman? Or Women intentionally created a menstruation period for themselves? We at SAMMO believe menstruation is a natural phenomena and it is not for nothing God made women to experience it every month in their life. Why would the government place a 20% Luxury Tax on sanitary products making our vulnerable girls find it difficult to buy? These are the questions we at SAMMO on this day join women and all well-meaning Ghanaians across the nation to seek answers from our authorities, whom we believe have all the power to scrap this unacceptable tax in order for women to also have hygienic menstruation periods without stress. As we celebrate this year’s International Menstrual Hygiene Day on the theme “making menstruation a normal fact of life by 2030” SAMMO is calling on government to as a matter of urgency take action of the follow; Scrap the 20% Luxury Tax on sanitary products and create an enabling environment for companies to manufacture sanitary pads locally. 2.The government through Ghana Education Service (GES) should also provide facilities which are gender friendly and changing rooms in our schools for girls to use during their menstruation period. We wish to also call on all parents to show much interest in their adolescent girl’s menstrual health and support them with menstrual hygiene education and sanitary pads. By this, women and girls can feel empowered to manage their periods safely, with confidence and without embarrassment. We should live in a world where no woman or girl is limited to something as natural as menstruation. To create a world where menstruation is just a normal fact of life, we need more action and investment in menstrual health and hygiene (MHM) education so that by 2030 every woman and girl would have basic knowledge about menstruation and should be able to afford sanitary pads. We wish to express our profound gratitude to our partners and sponsors Blessings Basket Ghana and The Britney Tachie Foundation for believing and supporting our course all this while together change is possible. Nangodi Chief insists Etornam Sey should come and apologize for hurting northern tradition and culture

The Paramount Chief of Nangodi Traditional Area in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region, Naba Yelzoya Kosom Asaga II has added his voice to the ongoing controversial remark made by a Menstrual Hygiene Advocate Rita Etornam Sey on 3FM and subsequently on GTV. He Insists Etornam Sey should look for some eminent traditional rulers and come and apologize because she has hurt our tradition and culture. Granting interviews in two separate media platforms, Ms Etornam stated, “I tell myself I have seen poverty until I went to the North, the girls use clay as a substitute for sanitary pads.” Her remark has since generated some amount of Controversy after making what the majority have condemned and described as an unfortunate remark against the northern people. Meanwhile, the Chief of Nangodi is asking Rita Etornam Sey some interesting questions; “Ask the woman which of the traditional authority she has consulted to such act before making a such authoritative statement. Which year did that happen? How feasible is it even if it has happened somewhere in any kingdom? Why will one go for Clay to pad her private part? When there are a lot of materials”. “These are arrogant people, very myopic people who will talk about other people without investigating and it happens to us as Africans. Have you heard that outside abroad the white people think we sleep on trees, they think Africa is full of trees and we are monkey sleeping on trees. He revealed Naba Yelzoya Kosom Asaga II said, the Etornam remark came out in the public domain, and he is imagining what pushed her to make such an ugly remark especially when the North and South do things in common. “So, we are just here, south and north, we went to school together, we go to church together, we go to mosque together, I wonder if the lady is a Ghanaian. She made the statement to deceive white people, she made the statement to create the impression that she is running NGO who are delivering people that are using Clay to pad themselves. So, she has an alternative motive and it is very unfair, she shouldn’t do that”. Why do you want to deal with blood and you are not looking for an absorbent, at least, you should be looking for something that will absorb the blood, but can the soil, particularly Clay by this nature absorb blood? It doesn’t make sense”. He stressed However, the angry Chief told Apexnewsgh.com “Etornam must be dealt with, they should let us know her, she should come and plead with us. She should look for some eminent traditional rulers and come and apologize to us because she has hurt our tradition and culture”. UER: NPP Women Organizer condemns Clay for pad remark says, NDC Women Organizer is taken undue advantage

The Upper East Women Wing of the governing New Patriotic Party Party led by Madam Georgina Ayamba has added her voice to the ongoing controversial remark made by a Menstrual Hygiene Advocate Rita Etornam Sey on 3FM and subsequently on GTV. The NPP Regional Women Wing condemned such remarks; “We would like to clarify and dismiss the inaccurate claim suggesting that girls from northern Ghana use clay as a substitute for sanitary pads. In the two separate interviews, Ms Etornam stated, “I tell myself I have seen poverty until I went to the North, the girls use clay as a substitute for sanitary pads.” However, as they call on Ms Etornam to redeem herself by offering some clarity to her statement, Madam Ayamba said, they wish to lend their voice in advocating for evidence-based approaches that empower girls and women, promote access to safe and affordable menstrual products, and encourage the adoption of sustainable menstrual hygiene management practices.  “We invite individuals, organizations, and the general public to engage in constructive conversations about menstrual hygiene. By promoting accurate information and combating misconceptions, we can work together towards achieving a society where every woman and girl can manage their menstruation with dignity, comfort, and confidence”. Meanwhile, responding to the earlier published response of the Upper East Regional Women Organizer on the clay pad controversy, the NPP Regional Women Organizer said, they strongly, in a related development condemn the Upper East Regional Women Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fawzia Abagnabama Yakubu for attempting to exploit the issue for political gain. According to the NPP Regional Women leader, “It is deeply disappointing to witness someone in her position of influence using a sensitive topic for political advantage”. Kindly read the full statement below: NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY UPPER EAST REGIONAL WOMEN’S SECRETARIAT 28/05/23 For Immediate Release CLARIFYING MISINFORMATION: DISMISSING THE INACCURATE CLAIM ABOUT CLAY SUBSTITUTES FOR SANITARY PADS AND NDC’s UNDUE POLITICAL ADVANTAGE In response to recent remarks made by a Menstrual Hygiene Advocate, Rita Etornam Sey on 3FM and subsequently on GTV, we would like to clarify and dismiss the inaccurate claim suggesting that girls from northern Ghana use clay as a substitute for sanitary pads. In the two separate interviews, Ms Etornam stated, “I tell myself I have seen poverty until I went to the North, the girls use clay as substitute for sanitary pads.” The regional women wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would always want to promote accurate information and dispel myths on the empowerment of Women and the Girl Child which Menstrual Hygiene Practices is no exception as Ghana joins the rest of the world to commemorate ‘2023 International Menstrual Hygiene Day’. Menstrual hygiene is a critical aspect of women’s health and well-being, and it is imperative that discussions around this topic are based on accurate and reliable information. Unfortunately, the claim made by the Menstrual Hygiene Advocate lacks substantiated evidence and has been met with justifiable criticism from various sections of the public. Since the story broke, we have taken the pain to conduct an extensive research and on-the-ground initiatives; we have found no credible evidence to support the assertion that girls from northern Ghana resort to using clay as an alternative to sanitary pads. This claim not only lacks factual basis but also perpetuates stereotypes and engenders negative perceptions about us from the north. Ms Etonam’s comments are condemnable and not deserving of an advocate. Same must be said of the networks that granted her the space to spew such untruths. While we call on Ms Etornam to redeem herself by offering some clarity to her statement, we wish to lend our voice in advocating for evidence-based approaches that empower girls and women, promote access to safe and affordable menstrual products, and encourage the adoption of sustainable menstrual hygiene management practices. We invite individuals, organizations, and the general public to engage in constructive conversations about menstrual hygiene. By promoting accurate information and combating misconceptions, we can work together towards achieving a society where every woman and girl can manage their menstruation with dignity, comfort, and confidence. We strongly, in a related development condemn the Upper East Regional Women Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fawzia Abagnabama Yakubu for attempting to exploit the issue for political gain. In a statement to criticize ‘clay pad’ comments, madam Yakubu sort to take undue advantage over the unfortunate public discourse and called on “government to either consider the current tax rate on sanitary pads or use the tax exemption law to exempt taxes on sanitary pads”, a request she and her party never thought of when in government. It is deeply disappointing to witness someone in her position of influence using a sensitive topic for political advantage. Menstrual hygiene is a crucial matter that demands tactful discourse and genuine efforts to address the challenges faced by women and girls. Such actions undermine the progress made by various stakeholders in supporting menstrual health. The Government of Ghana remains resolute in managing the country in a manner that benefits all its citizens. Exploiting the issue of menstrual hygiene for political favours does not only detracts from the real needs of girls but also disrespects their dignity and undermines their right to access proper menstrual care. We urge all political actors to approach women’s health issues with sensitivity, empathy, and a genuine commitment to serving the best interests of the people. Etonam Sey clay pad: Upper East Women Org asks intriguing questions, as she extends calls for monthly quota sanitary pads to FSHS girls’ beneficiaries

The Women’s Wing Secretariat of the opposition National Democratic Congress in the Upper East Region led by Fawzia Abagnabama Yakubu Regional Women Organizer has added her voice to the controversial remark made by one Ms. Etonam Sey, founder of Inspire Today Foundation on some TV networks in Ghana, amongst them is 3Fm and GTV, where she claimed some Northern girls use clay as sanitary pads. The remark made by Ms. Etonam Sey has since raised some amount of controversy and acrimony, especially on the part of the men and women from the north in every corner of the social media asking uncountable questions which are still begging for answers. However, the Upper East Regional Women Organizer is also extending a call for the government to consider adding monthly quota sanitary pads to our FSHS girls’ beneficiaries to help them peacefully go through their natural cycle without hindrance to class attendance. Read the full statement below: PRESS RELEASE NORTHERN GIRLS USE CLAY AS SANITARY PADS SUBSTITUTE Our attention has been drawn to a viral video purported to be an interview with one Ms. Etonam Sey, founder of Inspire Today Foundation  on some TV networks in Ghana, amongst them is  3fm and GTV, claiming  some Northern girls use  clay as sanitary pads. We are stating unequivocally that it’s a palpable lie, and not even in the ancient days did girls of northern Ghana ever use clay as substitute for sanitary pads. If we may ask; In what form is this clay, and how will that clay absorb their flow (blood)? How will that clay be placed onto an underwear? How thick or thin is that clay? Specifically, which part of northern Ghana, region and community? We need to know these girls since it poses serious health concerns. As much as the girls of the school you visited appreciate your kind gestures and efforts to aiding and improving their  menstrual  hygiene, we won’t take such wicked  falsehood  in the name of advocacy to help others. Such wicked falsehood is an affront to the dignity of Northern girls. Hence, we demand proof of such claims or an  unqualified apology via the same platforms and means within 7 days she used in peddling such falsehood. Anything short of the aforementioned demands, we shall advise ourselves accordingly.   WORLD INTERNATIONAL MENSTRUAL DAY As the world also prepares to observe world menstrual day, we will want to use this opportunity to call on government to either reconsider the current tax rate on sanitary pads or use the Tax exemption law to exempt taxes on sanitary pads to make them affordable. The government should also consider adding monthly quota sanitary pads to our FSHS girls’ beneficiaries to help them peacefully go through  their natural cycle without hindrance to class attendance. We will also want to appeal to producers and importers of sanitary pads to consider bringing or producing affordable but quality sanitary  pads, specifically targeting our students and pupils to enable them have easy access to such now. To all reproductive oriented CSO/NGOs, we say ayekoo, and let’s push further to demystify menstruation. Video: See food served to students of Bolgatanga Midwifery that caused a demonstration

One out of the many issues raised by the students of Bolagatanga Midwifery College yesterday during their demonstration against the school management has to do with the quality of food served to them. The aggrieved students told Apexnewsgh.com during their demonstration Wednesday, May 24, 2023, that they don’t enjoy the money they paid to management as part of their feeding fee. Because, the quality of food they served them as mature students, even those in primary school will not be comfortable consuming them. “The food they are serving us, even a dog in my house will not agree to the TZ they served us”. “On several occasions when they are serving the soup and is about to finish, they will add water to it and steer it”. “We use to pay Ghc1100.00 for breakfast, lunch, and supper and this semester they have added Ghc 400.00 and now we pay Ghc 1500, 00 and the funny thing is that, Ghc 1100, 00 was able to serve us sardine and sugar and now with Ghc 1500, 00 we don’t get sardine and sugar”. “Now, instead of our giving us the sardine we paid for, they now used their hands to squeeze Amani and put it inside our pepper”. “We are not in Senior High, we want to charge of phones by our bed. They claimed we are grown up but they are treating us as Primary one children”. They stressed However, upon the invention of security ranging from the Regional Police Commander, Municipal Police Commander, officials BNI, and others, the aggrieved students were able to calm down Some pictures of what they consume as part of their Ghc 1500, 00 Below is a video sample shared by the students to Apenewsgh.com Source: Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana For publication please kindly contact us on 0256336062 or Email apexnewsgh@gmail.com

Heart breaking reasons for Bolgatanga Midwifery demonstration unveiled

Students of Bolgatanga Midwifery College yesterday poured out all their frustration during their demonstration against school management for treating them as slaves in the name of acquiring Midwifery as a profession. Apexnewsgh.com report The students who all came out and unanimously demonstrated told Apexnewsgh.com they are suffering at the hands of their school management and needed government intervention to free them from what they described as bondage. If not for the invention of security ranging from the Regional Police Commander, Municipal Police Commander, officials BNI, and others. No one would have predicted what the outcome of the demonstration will be. We could hear some of the school teachers passing words like, “The students took us unaware” and “We were not expecting this at all” However, the school management together with student leaders was able to have a meeting following some of the issues they raised. The Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu also came, but by the time he came, the security had already done a good job by way of calming things down. However, our source from the meeting informed us that the Regional Minister requested a comprehensive report of what happened to be submitted to his office. Read below detailed reasons why Bolgatanga Midwifery College demonstrated. “Last semester, we paid over Ghc 300 for utility and over Ghc 300 for electricity but our light was disconnected without any tangible reason”. “If management is having a meeting, they don’t care to engage our leadership, they always come out from and imposed things on us”. “Thieves always came in with knives and guns to steal our phones. Just last month April, 14 phones were stolen from students, and this semester alone in the month of May within 1 week, students have lost 9 phones and when we complain to the principal, she will give us a heartbreaking response like “You people are careless” “For just two months, we are paying Ghc 1500.00 for feeding. Initially, we used to take sardines, but this time they are not giving us sardines anymore. They only give tea and Koko and even with the Koko”. “I am in year two, ever since I came into this school, I have not enjoyed Wi-Fi yet, every time they keep increasing the fee of the Wi-Fi” “Our dormitory is overcrowded”. “We are not saying they shouldn’t enjoy their AC, but they should also let us get what we are paying for”. “The food they are serving us, even a dog in my house will not agree to the TZ they served us”. “On several occasions when they are serving the soup and is about to finish, they will add water to it and steer it”. “We use to pay Ghc1100.00 for breakfast, lunch, and supper and this semester they have added Ghc 400.00 and now we pay Ghc 1500.00 and the funny thing is that, Ghc 1100.00 was able to serve us sardine and sugar and now with Ghc 1500,00 we don’t get sardine and sugar”. “Now, instead of our giving us the sardine we paid for, they now used their hands to squeeze Amani and put it inside our pepper”. UER: 197 cases of dog bite reports recorded so far in 2023

Even though no cases of rabies has been recorded so far in 2023, a total number of One Hundred and Ninety Seven (197) cases of dog bite has been reported in various health facilities in the Upper East Region between January and April 2023. Rabies is one of the viruses ignorantly taken for granted by the general public. Is a kind of sickness that easily consume innocent lives for something that could be prevented if realized on time. According to the report, It is estimated that rabies is responsible for 59,000 agonizing human deaths every year – with most of those people living in poor rural communities in Africa and Asia. 40% of these deaths happen in children below the age of 15 years. Below are a few things you need to know about dog bite and rabies virus ■ Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease caused by a neurotropic virus of the family Rhabdoviridae, genus Lyssavirus, a subgroup rabies virus that causes progressive and fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. ■ Clinically, it has two forms: ■ Furious rabies – characterized by hyperactivity and hallucinations. ■ Paralytic rabies – characterized by paralysis and coma. ■ Rabies affects all warm-blooded animals, and the disease is prevalent throughout mainly in developing countries of Asia and Africa, including Ghana. ■ Rabies remains one of the most important zoonotic diseases, with case fatality rates approaching 100%. ■ Bites from domestic dogs constitute the major mode of rabies transmission, disproportionately affecting the poorest communities. Suzuki et al., 2008 ■ Dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths contributing to 99% of all cases ■ Rabies remains one of the under reported, neglected tropical diseases that affects the marginalized, poor and vulnerable populations How big is the problem? ■ It is estimated that rabies is responsible for 59,000 agonizing human deaths every year – with most of those people living in poor rural communities in Africa and Asia. 40% of these deaths happen in children below the age of 15years. ■ To put that into perspective, one person dies of rabies somewhere around the world every nine minutes. In addition to the human deaths, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of animals also die of rabies every year, creating suffering for individual animals and for the families who depend on these animals as a source of livelihood or companionship. ■ Rabies is 100% fatal with no cure once clinical signs start. ■ Rabies kills people and domestic animals such as dogs and cattle ■ Rabies causes financial hardship when people have to pay for vaccination after bite wounds including the cost of the medical treatment, and cost of travel to the medical facility ■ Children are at a greater risk of getting rabies. This is because children: ■       Play with animals ■       May not report bites ■       May receive more severe bites ■       Are often bitten in the head  ■ People with limited resources and knowledge especially in rural areas are those most at risk of the disease. Please kindly, remember to report any dog bite incident to any health facility near you for immediate medical assistance. For they say, prevention is better than cure.
