Don’t attempt taking credit of Regional Hospital Dialysis Center Initiative–NPP to NDC

The Communication Director of the governing New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region Peter Ayinbisa has cautioned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to desist from attempting to take credit from the yet-to-launch Dialysis center initiative at the Regional hospital. He said:“Another issue raised by the NDC which is germane but poorly premised is the lack of a dialysis center at the regional hospital. The absence of a dialysis center means that patients with kidney-related conditions must travel to other regions to access dialysis services, which can be costly and time-consuming. “While we support the call for such a critical facility, the known convention around the country shows that government alone may not suffice in providing us this facility. We, therefore, support the calls for benevolent sons and daughters of the upper east and beyond to lend their unflinching support to this worthy course. “In addition, the government has also stated that it is working on measures to prevent kidney-related conditions and promote healthy lifestyles. This includes initiatives to increase awareness about the importance of regular health check-ups, proper nutrition, and physical activity. However, he stressed that the initiative was started by a doctor at the Regional Hospital “I want to put it on record that, is not the NDC who is initiating the dialysis center project” Dr. Emmanuel Nsobila Akatibo, a Physician Specialist with the Upper East Regional hospital initiated a serious campaign to get a dialysis center in the region. UER: New born babies risk their lives for non-availability of vaccines –NDC

The Communication Bureau of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by Abdallah Jonathan Salifu has raised an alarm following the non-Availiability of vaccines for newborn babies in the Upper East Region.  The statement says, “As part of the measures to deal with the devastating effects and to save the lives of our newborn babies, past governments have collaborated and directly provided funding for the procurement of vaccines to vaccinate our children within the age bracket of 0-6years against the diseases under the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) adopted since the 1980s”. “Further checks revealed that these vaccines are equally not in stock at Zipline which serves as the last resort when the need arises”. Kindly read the full statement below: UPPER EAST MUST KNOW SERIES PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY COMRADE JONATHAN ABDALLA SALIFU, UPPER EAST REGIONAL COMMUNICATION OFFICER ON THE NON-SUPPLY OF ROUTINE VACCINES FOR THE SIX-KILLER CHILDHOOD DISEASES IN THR UPPER EAST REGION. 21 February, 2023. Ladies and gentlemen of the media, I wish to first of all thank you all for availing yourselves for this maiden “UPPER EAST MUST KNOW SERIES” press conference which is among a series to come. Friends from the media, we have called you here this morning to address you on a very disturbing development within the health sector and health service delivery in our region. This development, ladies and gentlemen, has to do with the shortage of routine vaccines meant for the immunization of our new born babies and children under five years against the effects of the six killer diseases and others such as diphtheria, measles, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, and childhood diarrhoea. As part of the  measures  to deal with the devastating effects and to save the lives of our new born babies, past governments have collaborated and directly provided funding for the procurement of vaccines to vaccinate our children within the age bracket of 0-6years against the diseases under the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) adopted since the 1980s. This Immunization program received a major boost during the NDC’s administration in 2012 when our country took the lead as the first country in the continent to introduce and rolled out simultaneously two major vaccines namely, the pneumococcal and Rotavirus vaccines as part of the drive to win the fight against the diseases. By this singular and giant step, the erstwhile H.E John Evans Atta Mills NDC government saved this country approximately US$3.2 million annually and about 12,000 and 10,000 pneumonia and childhood diarrhoea related deaths respectively. This translated to about 25% reduction in deaths associated with the diseases (Gavi Vaccines Alliance, 2012). Sadly, these gains that have consciously been made by successive governments preceding the current regime have been eroded owing to the ineptitude of this wicked and talkative Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government. Ladies and gentlemen of the media, our checks from the health facilities in the districts across the region show that Bacillus Calmette-Guerin, OPV Polio, measles, yellow fever, MenA, PENTA vaccines meant for the vaccination of our children against tuberculosis meningitis, poliomyelitis, measles, yellow fever, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and Hemophilus influenza type B respectively, have all not been available in the region for  administration to our children since the last 2 months. Further checks revealed that these vaccines are equally not in stock at Zipline which serves as the last resort when the need arises. For the Tetanus Diphtheria (TD) and Tetanus Toxoid (TT) vaccines which have been administered to pregnant women to protect them and the unborn babies from these killer diseases worldwide since the 1960s are also fast running out of stock. These despicable situations have resulted in the non-vaccination or irregular vaccination of our children both of which compromise the immunity of these little ones against the diseases thereby exposing them to the risk of contracting the deadly diseases. This needless development has equally forced our nursing mothers and fathers to move from one health facility to the other with the hope of finding these non-existent vaccines for the vaccination of their children. Ladies and gentlemen, the NDC in the Upper East Region finds this development very distasteful and is gravely concerned about it considering the dangers it poses to the lives of the children and the people of the region alike. We are particularly alarmed by recent media reports from the Northern region and other regions in northern Ghana of the outbreaks of measles and others. The reports from the media indicate that about 70 cases of measles have so far been recorded this year in the northern region (Daily Graphic, 2023 and Daily Guide Network, 2023). This obviously should be of great worry to us all considering the infectious and deadly nature of these diseases. Our revulsion to the lukewarm attitude of this government to addressing this existential health threat is even more justified considering the fact that this government has had the most financial resources from taxes, oil revenues, loans and other sources totaling over GHs 500 billion to manage every facet of this economy including the health sector and yet, has been unable to sustain this basic primary health care program such as the acquisition and provisions of  vaccines to protect our vulnerable children from the needless preventable deaths associated with the killer diseases. Besides the non-availability of the vaccines, the health sector in the region is plagued with a lot of debilitating challenges some of which include but not limited to the following: Lack of dialysis center at the only referral center, the Regional hospital Dilapidated and not fit for purpose health infrastructure Abandoned CHPS centers that were started by the previous NDC government Inadequate doctors and skilled health personnel Inadequate accommodations for doctors and health personnel among others. Ladies and gentlemen, one would have expected that our Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu whose fund raising expertise enabled him to mobilize with the speed of light an amount of GHS 105,000.00 from his team of MDCEs in the region in support of the building of a National

Breaking News: 47 Year old Son of a politician killed by unidentified gunmen

Toyin Adeniji, a 47-year-old foster son of Chief Dapo Sarumi, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has been reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen in the Agege area of Lagos. It was gathered that Toyin Adeniji was shot dead on Monday night in front of Sarumi’s Oyewole Street opposite Sarumi’s house residence in Agege. According to residents in the area, the late Toyin and six of his friends were sitting opposite Sarumi’s house at about 9:00 pm when the incident happened. A resident who doesn’t want his name in print said that “on the day of the incident, Adeniji and some of the friends were sitting opposite Sarumi’s house when the assailant who was on the mask, walked past them, simultaneously turned back and opened fire. The resident revealed that suspecting something was wrong, they all scampered for safety, but Adeniji was not as lucky as others, as he was shot in the head, and died on the spot. However, Policemen from Area ‘” G’”, Ogba, have cordoned off the area, even as the case has been transferred to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID). Efforts to reach the spokesperson Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin were unfruitful as he refused to pick up his calls. MTN Ghana Foundation kick start blood donation exercise after 2years break

MTN Ghana Foundation in the Upper as part of their annual Valentine activity has organized a blood donation exercise in the Upper East Region. The MTN blood donation target is to stock the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital blood bank in other to save lives. In the Upper East Region, this year’s exercise which took place at Bolgatanga Gnat hall saw the majority of the people participating in the donation exercise. Speaking to the media, the Territory Sales Controller for the Upper East Region Mr. Richard Asamane, explained the rationale and why MTN Foundation is taking up the initiative. ” For us at MTN, we have a culture and the belief that it is always a period around time to give a part of yourself to make another person’s life brighter and also put a smile on the face of another person. You would agree with me that blood is what comes out of the human body and in a month of love and a period of love such as Valentine something from the part of your body is the greatest gift you can give to any human especially when it saves the life of that person. “You know the issues about blood and the blood bank in the Upper East and how they constantly struggle to get blood to the patient. So, for us in MTN, we think it is a perfect time for each one f everyone to struggle to donate a part of yourself to make somebody’s life brighter and to put a smile on another person”. “It has been an annual event but, over the last 2 years, we had to put a break to it because of COVID public restrictions and gathering and those issues that have to come with COVID protocols. But this year we are back”. “We are targeting 400 units of blood for the Upper East Regional blood blank”. Mr. Asamane said

Pupil’s death: Lagos govt shuts Chrisland school

The Lagos State Goverment, yesterday, ordered the temporary closure of Chrisland School, located at Opebi-Ikeja, following the death of a student of the school, Whitney Adeyemi. The order was contained in a statement by the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, yesterday. Adefisayo said the closure was ordered pending the outcome of a full investigation into the unfortunate incident. According to her, “On behalf of the state Ministry of Education, we commiserate with Mr. and Mrs. Adeyemi, parents of Whitney, over the death of their daughter. “We also note the impact of this unfortunate event on family, friends and acquaintances of Whitney and call for calm as we assure that no effort will be spared in investigating the incident. We, pray for the repose of her soul.” Meanwhile, controversy is trailing the circumstances surrounding the death of Whitney, whose demise occurred during the school’s sporting competition last Thursday. This followed claims by some of the students that 12-year-old Whitney was electrocuted, contrary to claims by the management of Chrisland International High School, that she slumped in the full glare of other students and not under any hidden circumstances. But the bereaved father, Dr. Michael Adeniran, said the battle line had been drawn, as legal action would be filed against the school over its comment that his late daughter was sick. Electrocution Some of late Whitney’s schoolmates, who claimed to have witnessed the incident that led to her demise, said she “was electrocuted by a naked wire from a cotton candy machine.” One of them, in an audio recording on a school group chat, said Whitney and her friend had gone to buy candy at a cotton candy stand that fateful day when tragedy struck. According to the student, “I don’t know what happened when they got to the stand, whether she placed her hand or leg on something. But, we noticed all of a sudden that a strong force pulled Whitney up and threw her on the ground. That was when people started pouring water on her. Immediately, the owner of the candy stand switched off the machine and ran away through the fence. “There were no medical personnel to attend to Whitney or administer first aid on her before taking her to the hospital. It was fellow students that were pouring water on her, until the school nurse arrived. The nurse couldn’t do much, so they had to convey her in the school bus since there was no ambulance at the venue.” School’s position But the school exonerated itself from culpability, explaining that its immediate response was to identify the nearest medical facility, where the doctor on duty administered oxygen and every aid possible on her. The school in a statement by its management said: “The management and staff of Chrisland Schools Limited are heartbroken and distressed over the death of our precious student, Whitney Adeniran, whose painful exit occurred on February 9, 2023. “Whitney was one of our Day students, who opted not to participate in the Inter-House Sports march-past for reasons we were not very sure about. However, on discretion, we respected her decision to err on the side of caution because on January 20, 2023, it is in our records that she complained about not too buoyant health and we immediately contacted her parents. Her father, Mr. Michael Adeniran, came to the school to take her home. We emphasized to her parents to take a critical look at her. “It is instructive to state that Whitney slumped in public view and not under any hidden circumstances whatsoever.” How I found out my daughter died during inter-house sports —Mother Mrs. Blessing Adeniran, Whitney’s mother, has taken to social media to narrate how she found out her daughter had died.   In the video on her Instagram page, yesterday, the tearful mother said she was told her daughter slumped and had been rushed to the hospital.   Blessing said she immediately rushed to the hospital but had a hard time finding it because she was given the wrong address. However, after she finally located where her daughter was, she said Whitney was already dead and her lips and tongue were black. Narrating her ordeal, she said: “We drove out of the stadium to the gate, we asked the gatemen (for the hospital), they didn’t know. As we were driving around, we were asking people where we can find Central Hospital but they all said they only knew Agege General Hospital. When we couldn’t locate the place, we decided to go to Agege Central Mosque and on our way to the mosque, we saw the school bus packed, so, we knew we were at the place. “I jumped down from the car when we saw the school bus and rushed in. I saw the staff that went with her (Whitney) and I asked her ‘Madam, where is my child, what happened, why did she faint,’ she (the staff) said ‘I don’t know, she’s in there’. I went in there and I saw my daughter’s corpse, Desola didn’t say anything to me. I went in there and I met my daughter on her deathbed, she was already dead. “She was drenched, soaked to the skin, water was dripping. I knelt down, I called on God, I shouted, I screamed. I felt her pulse, there was no pulse. My daughter was silent. I asked the doctor what happened to my daughter and he said from the look of things she suffered from cardiac arrest.   “How does a 12-year-old have a cardiac arrest? No pre-existing heart condition, no pre-existing medical condition. She was hale and hearty, she was not sick in any form. Even if she will die from cardiac arrest, why should one arrest kill a healthy teenager? Let me state this, that by the time I got there, my daughter’s lips and tongue had already turned black.” Blessing added that her daughter as not taken to a hospital but an immunisation centre, adding that there was no

Death toll after major quake climbs to more than 2,300 in Turkey, Syria

The most powerful earthquake in nearly a century struck Turkey and Syria early Monday, killing over 2,300 people in their sleep, levelling buildings and causing tremors felt as far away as Iraq. The 7.8-magnitude quake wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a restless region filled with millions of people who have fled the civil war in Syria and other conflicts. The head of Syria’s National Earthquake Centre, Raed Ahmed, told pro-government radio that this was “the biggest earthquake recorded in the history of the centre”. At least 810 people died in government-controlled parts of Syria, according to the latest toll. At least 1,498 people also died in Turkey, Turkish authorities said. Shocked survivors in Turkey rushed out into the snow-covered streets in their pyjamas, watching rescuers dig through the debris of damaged homes with their hands. “Seven members of my family are under the debris,” Muhittin Orakci, a stunned survivor in Turkey’s mostly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir, told AFP. “My sister and her three children are there. And also her husband, her father-in-law and her mother-in-law.” The rescue was being hampered by a winter blizzard that covered major roads in ice and snow. Officials said the quake made three major airports in the area inoperable, further complicating deliveries of vital aid. Election test for Erdogan The quake struck at 04:17 am (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles) near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which is home to around two million people, the US Geological Survey said. Turkey’s AFAD emergencies service centre put the quake’s magnitude at 7.7, updating an initial estimate of 7.4. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who will be under intense pressure to oversee an effective response to the disaster heading to a tightly-contested May 14 election, conveyed his sympathies and urged national unity. “We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage,” the Turkish leader tweeted. Washington, the European Union, and Russian all immediately sent condolences and offers of help. Turkey also received a message of support from its historic rival Greece, whose relations with Ankara have suffered from a spate of border and cultural disputes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered to provide “the necessary assistance” to Turkey, whose combat drones are helping Kyiv fight the Russian invasion. And Iran, which together with Russia is trying to help Ankara restore its relations with Damascus following its efforts to help oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, sent separate messages of condolence to both sides. ‘People under rubble’ Images on Turkish television showed rescuers digging through rubble across city centres and residential neighbourhoods of almost all the big cities running along the border with Syria. Some of the heaviest devastation occurred near the quake’s epicentre between Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep, where entire city blocks lay in ruins under the gathering snow. Kahramanmaras Governor Omer Faruk Coskun said it was too early to estimate the death toll because so many buildings were destroyed. “It is not possible to give the number of dead and injured at the moment because so many buildings have been destroyed,” Coskun said. “The damage is serious.” A famous mosque dating back to the 13th century partially collapsed in the province of Maltaya, where a 14-story building with 28 apartments housed 92 people also collapsed. In other cities, social media posts showed a 2,200-year-old hilltop castle built by Roman armies in Gaziantep lying in ruins, its walls partially turned to rubble. “We hear voices here — and over there, too,” one rescuer was overheard as saying on NTV television in front of a flattened building in the city of Diyarbakir. “There may be 200 people under the rubble.” Power outages The Syrian health ministry reported damage across the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus, where Russia is leasing a naval facility. AFP correspondents in northern Syria said terrified residents ran out of their homes after the ground shook. Even before the tragedy, buildings in Aleppo, Syria’s pre-war commercial hub, often collapsed due to the dilapidated infrastructure, which has suffered from lack of war-time oversight. Naci Gorur, an earthquake expert with Turkey’s Academy of Sciences, urged local officials to immediately check the region’s dams for cracks to avert potentially catastrophic flooding. Officials cut off natural gas and power supplies across the region as a precaution, also closing shools for two weeks. “The size of the aftershocks, which may continue for days although mostly decreasing in energy, brings a risk of collapse of structures already weakened by the earlier events,” David Rothery, an earthquake expert at the Open University in Britain. “This makes search and rescue efforts dangerous.” Turkey is in one of the world’s most active earthquake zones. The Turkish region of Duzce suffered a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in 1999, when more than 17,000 people died –including about 1,000 in Istanbul. Experts have long warned a large quake could devastate Istanbul, a megalopolis of 16 million people filled with rickety homes. The last 7.8-magnitude tremor shook Turkey in 1939, when 33,000 died in the eastern Erzincan province. AFP—

Just In: Former President joins his ancestors

General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan’s former president  who took power in a bloodless coup in 1999 and launched a fight against Islamist extremism, has died at the age of 79, Daily Mail reports. General Musharraf was a controversial military ruler who led a reluctant Pakistan into aiding the US war in Afghanistan against the same Taliban fighters his nation had previously backed, even as Islamic militants twice targeted him for assassination. The former special forces commando became president through the last of a string of military coups that hit Pakistan after its founding amid the bloody 1947 partition of India. He ruled the nuclear-armed state after his 1999 coup through turbulent times, including tensions with India, an atomic proliferation scandal and an Islamic extremist insurgency. Pakistan’s Former President General Pervez Musharraf He stepped down in 2008 while facing possible impeachment. During his time in office, he became an unlikely ally of the US and Nato, supporting them in the war against terror, and visited the UK during Tony Blair’s premiership.     After stepping down, Musharraf lived in self-imposed exile in Dubai to avoid criminal charges, despite attempting a political comeback in 2012. His family announced last June that he had been in hospital for weeks while suffering from amyloidosis, an incurable condition that sees proteins build up in the body’s organs. Shazia Siraj, a spokeswoman for the Pakistani consulate in Dubai, confirmed his death and said diplomats were providing support to his family. “I have confronted death and defied it several times in the past because destiny and fate have always smiled on me,’ Gen Musharraf once wrote. “I only pray that I have more than the proverbial nine lives of a cat.” Pakistan, a nation which is now home to 220 million people, drew US attention a little under two years after it seized power due to its border with Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden launched September 11, 2001, attacks 2001 from Afghanistan, sheltered by the country’s Taliban rulers, and General Musharraf knew what would come next. “America was sure to react violently, like a wounded bear,” he wrote in his autobiography. “If the perpetrator turned out to be al-Qaeda, then that wounded bear would come charging straight toward us.” By September 12, then-US secretary of state Colin Powell told Musharraf that Pakistan would either be “with us or against us”.     He said another American official threatened to bomb Pakistan “back into the Stone Age” if it chose the latter. Gen Musharraf chose the former. A month later, he stood by then-president George W Bush at the Waldorf Astoria in New York to declare Pakistan’s unwavering support to fight with the US against ‘terrorism in all its forms wherever it exists’. Pakistan became a crucial transit point for Nato supplies heading to landlocked Afghanistan – even though Pakistan’s powerful Inter-Services Intelligence agency had backed the Taliban after they swept into power in Afghanistan in 1994. Before that, the CIA and others funnelled money and arms through the ISI to Islamic fighters battling the 1980s Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The US-led invasion of Afghanistan saw Taliban fighters flee over the border into Pakistan, including bin Laden, whom the US killed in 2011 at a compound in Abbottabad. They regrouped and the offshoot Pakistani Taliban emerged, beginning a years-long insurgency in the mountainous border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The CIA began flying armed drones from Pakistan with Musharraf’s blessing, using an airstrip built by the founding president of the United Arab Emirates for falconing in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The programme helped beat back the militants but saw more than 400 strikes in Pakistan alone kill at least 2,366 people, including 245 civilians, according to the Washington-based New America Foundation think tank.
